Living in cities is wonderful, but the cost in some of the big U.S. cities, such as New York and Los Angeles, is a big problem for living there. Fortunately, this country has many good cities where the cost of living is more affordable.
Pittsburgh,PA
Pittsburgh is a great city to have busy and noisy activities without feeling overwhelmed(不堪重负的). One of the best advantages here is the low cost of housing and other fees. Even when you live there, the view of the city from Mount Washington doesn’t get old. Three major sports teams have stadiums there, and the energy in Pittsburgh on game days is something that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Grand Rapids, MI
While the transportation costs are a bit above average, Grand Rapids makes up for that with low housing and health care costs. If you love public art and craft beer, Grand Rapids is a great choice. The city gives people a small-town feeling, with people always waving hello as you walk by. There are 1200 acres of parks within the city. If you’re looking for more water than the river offers, Lake Michigan is less than an hour away.
Knoxville,TN
Knoxville’s housing costs are below the national average. It is known as the most dog-friendly city, which is probably the best selling point a city could have. The Knoxville Museum of Art has fun classes so you can continue to learn and improve skills throughout your lifetime.
Buffalo, NY
New York City may not be affordable, but Buffalo certainly is. It’s also one of the most beautiful cities to live in with all the views next to rivers. You’ll also have one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders, Niagara Falls, a short drive away. There are great skiing and ice-skating areas in Buffalo.

Alice Johnston is a resident of Noting Hill, the London neighbourhood famous for colorfully- painted row houses and for being a Hollywood movie set. There can be a dark side to living inside it. She has witnessed all kinds of crazy behavior for the perfect snapshot (快照). Johnston was once woken up at 6 a.m, on Easter Sunday by French teenagers taking pictures outside. Another time she was changing when an elderly man took a picture of her windows. Although the shutters (百叶窗) were closed at the time, she was shocked by the experience.
When private homes become tourist attractions, conflicts can occur. In Hong Kong, the Monster Building became a huge selfie spot after it was featured in Transformers: Age of Extinction, A sign in English and Chinese put up by building residents reads “This is a private estate. All kinds of activities are not allowed, including but not limited to photographing, gatherings, use of drones (无人机) and yelling. We shall not take responsibility for personal injury caused by any accident. ”However, many visitors ignore the signs, and a quick scan of Instagram shows plenty of recent images taken there.
A pale-pink house near where Johnston lives has become such a popular photo site that the residents have given up on trying to keep people away. Instead, they’ve put up a donation box asking people to contribute money to charity in exchange for taking a photo.

Some people think that travelling with children is quite difficult. Kids are often too young to understand the point of a visit in some museums. But luckily, there are cities that offer many attractions not only for adults, but also for little tourists. Among these cities, Copenhagen also has its place.
The mysteries of the sea world
In the National Aquarium Denmark, many species of water animals can be seen. Kids will be surely delighted with all the colourful fish, swimming between water plants. It is also an occasion to see the fantastic coral reef(珊瑚礁). When someone is brave enough, he can also see some sharks swimming behind the glass!
Tivoli - amusement for everyone
The first opening of this magical place was in the 19th century. Nowadays it’s an attraction for people of all ages. Beautiful gardens encourage tired tourists as well as local people. Those who seek for some excitements will also have good fun here - several roller coasters guarantee great entertainment. That park looks amazing in the evening, when it is brightly lit with many lights.
Film in a planetarium
People who would like to experience something connected with science and astronomy ought to visit the Tycho Brahe Planetarium. Here the 3D films are being displayed on a screen. Tourists from abroad can use special headphones, so they can listen to the audio-description in English. The visit here can be useful not only for kids, but also for adults.
A monument of Little Mermaid
Children will surely like that statue - especially when parents will tell them the fairy tale about that character. A short visit by that monument is customary, because it is one of the worldwide known symbols of Copenhagen. It is located in the port and depicts a mermaid sitting on a rock. 【推荐3】My motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.
As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem. I thought. So I put Roald dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.
We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”
Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I'm beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.

The researchers looked at the lifespans of 101 different species, from sheep to elephants, and found that females lived an average of 18% longer than males for more than 60% of the species studies. In humans, females tend to live around 7.8% longer.
The study, led by scientists at University Lyon 1 and published in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found this was not due to the sexes aging at different rates but that females had an average lower risk of mortality (死亡率) in adulthood than males. It was unclear from the data as to why females survive longer than males, however, the authors suggest that it could be due to complex interactions between the local environmental conditions and sex-specific costs of reproduction.
Professor Tamás Székely, from the University of Bath, was one of the authors of the study. He said, “We’ve known for a long time that women generally live longer than men, but were surprised to find that the differences in lifespan between the sexes was even more pronounced in wild mammals than in humans. This could be either because females are naturally able to live longer, or that female mortality drops compared with males.”
For example, lionesses live at least 50% longer in the wild than male lions. Female lions live together in a pride, where sisters, mothers and daughters hunt together and look after each other, while adult male lions often live alone or with their brother and therefore don’t have the same support network.
Another possible explanation for the sex difference is that female survival increases when males provide some or all of the parental care. This is also true in birds. Giving birth and caring for young becomes a significant health cost for females and so this cost is reduced if both parents work together to bring up their offspring (后代).
1. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show?A.The result of the study. | B.The impact of the study. |

His water supply was sometimes uncertain. But there had also been moments of unexpected kindness: A couple parking beside offered to share their lunch; or the guy in the truck asked if he needed help. On the last day of Quinones’ trip, he was riding down a dusty track when he came upon a man lying unconscious on the ground, who was clearly dehydrated (脱水的). Quinones tried to give some water and waited until the ambulance arrived.
Quinones, who’d received help over the course of his trip, paid it forward. The odds are, if you’ve spent any time in the wild, you’ll have experienced these gestures of kindness from strangers or given them yourself too as Quinones did.
So what is it about being outside in nature that makes people want to help others?
The first explanation is that in the wild, there may not be any other help. According to the “bystander effect” (旁观者效应), the more people who are in the presence of someone needing help, the less likely any of those are to actually provide it. But another idea is that there is something about nature itself that seems to promote “prosocial (亲社会)” attitudes. As a recent study suggests, exposure to nature can stimulate feelings of transcendence — a sense of connection to other people, to the world around us and to the universe.
When we get into the wild, we become weaker. And being in an easily-hurt position makes us look at the world differently. So, in the wild, where we are removed of normal possessions, surroundings and identities, we seem more willing to go the extra mile for someone. It’s in nature, ironically, that we can learn new things about humanity.
1. What can we know about Quinones’ trip?A.Pretty constant water supply was available. |
B.Food was frequently provided from other strangers. |
C.He’d usually encountered dramatic troubles. |
D.He’d travelled to some remote desert on bicycle. |
A.To give further details of Quinones’ trip. |
B.To show the difficulty of Quinones’ trip. |
C.To provide an example for the topic. |
D.To stress the importance of strangers’ help. |
A.It explains people’s getting help easily in nature. |
B.It demonstrates people’s prosocial attitudes. |
C.It reveals people’s indifference in crowds. |
D.It stimulates people’s connecting to people and the world. |
A.We can only learn about people’s personality in the wild. |
B.It is a pity that people don’t often help others in daily life. |
C.It is ironic to help strangers in need when in nature. |
D.We can obtain new knowledge when in nature. |

From California a product manager was beamed onto a stage like magic. The head of Imperial’s EdTech Lab says, this presents a window to the world. Through holograms(全息图)we can bring in lectures from across the globe, and they can appear in front of our students in a realistic manner. That’s the key.
The developer of the technique explains how it works. “We’re presenting a 2D image as a 3D image, and the iris(虹膜)is flat so we see everything in 2D.Our brain changes it to 3D. We’re doing exactly the same trick. We’re presenting a 2D image but with depth of field and a really good vision. My brain just changes it to a 3D image.” Attendees say there are many ways this tool can help educators and students.
The second thing we could do with that is having CEOs coming to the classroom, and engaging with students. And the third way probably is maybe to have Albert Einstein coming to the classroom. There might be a long wait for that. Meanwhile, master student Josephine Collins says she prefers the interaction a hologram lecture offers compared to those presented online.
I wouldn’t mind it. I think its very interesting if we can have access to different lectures and different things like guest speakers. That’s something I would definitely enjoy. Developers say the cost of holographic technology has dropped considerably since the days it was used mostly in big-budget music shows making it possible for educational institutions to afford it.
1. According to this passage, holographic technology mainly benefits________.A.health care | B.commerce | C.education | D.agriculture |
A.Our sight upgrades a 2D image into a 3D image. |

While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide what is needed for the activity, it can prevent hunger during exercise. What is needed for muscles is stored in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.
Exercising on a full stomach is not a good idea. Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.
If you have an early morning race or exercise, it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal. If not, you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20-30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat. You can have a liquid (液体) meal closer to your event than a solid (固体) meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.
Because glucose (葡萄糖) is the energy source for most exercise, a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.
Planning is necessary if you are competing in an all-day event, such as track meets or other tournaments. You should plan ahead and prepare meals and snacks that you have tried before. Do not experiment with something new on the event day.
1. To prepare for the next exercise, you should ________.A.eat soon before exercise | B.eat during exercise |

Job sharing differs from conventional (常规的) part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.
Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people.Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities.
As would be expected, most job sharers are women.A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain's Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age.Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status.Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence.
The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones.In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.
