How is this virus transmitted?

This is an outbreak of disease that started in Wuhan, one of the central Chinese cities. It’s caused by a novel corona virus that means it’s brand-new.     1    .

What are the symptoms?

The virus is from a family called the corona viruses. The symptoms of this illness are pretty mundane (平凡的) on the face of it: it’s a dry cough fever and then breathing problems.     2    . However, as for the more severe cases, people have gone on to develop viral pneumonia, and all the deaths have been among those people.

    3    .

This brand-new corona virus came from animals, and it’s believed that the source was actually a seafood market in Wuhan, which also sells wild animals. So far all the cases have come out of Wuhan. But some people haven’t picked it up there.

Should I be panicking about this outbreak?

As we can see, older people are ending up in hospital with the virus. They’re usually over 40.

4    . Basically their immune systems are not very strong, and they’re gong to find it very hard to fight off a virus.

How is this virus transmitted?

We’ve only just discovered that the new corona virus is actually transmitted from one person to another. It was hoped at first actually that it just came from animals as all corona viruses do.     5    .So we’ve got people to people transmission, because the market has been closed for sometime, and there are cases in people who’ve never been near it.

A.It seems quite mild in lots of people.
B.Where have cases been confirmed so far?
C.So new that actually it doesn’t have a name yet.
D.People diagnosed with viral pneumonia will die.
E.It is a brand-new virus so we don’t know how it’s going to behave.
F.Those who have died tend actually to have heart disease or cancer already.
G.Now it looks as though it is actually passed from one human being to another, however.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍的是一项美国研究,COVID-19阳性患者服用一种名为二甲双胍的低价降糖药物后,患上后遗症的风险降低40%。

【推荐1】People who took a cheap diabetes ( 糖尿病) drug after testing positive for COVID-19 had a 40 percent lower risk of getting post-COVID, a US-based study said on Friday.

The finding was regarded as a potential “landmark” in the fight against the still little-understood condition, which the World Health Organization estimates affect 1 in 10 people who get COVID-19. The study said it was the first randomized, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial —considered the gold standard in research—to show that taking a drug can prevent post-COVID. It tested a drug called metformin (二甲双胍),which was originally developed from the French lilac flower, and has been the most common medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes across the world for decades. This means the drug is known to be safe, as well as being inexpensive and widely available.

The study covered 1,126 overweight or obese people in the United States, half receiving metformin and half a placebo in the days after testing positive for COVID-19. After 10 months, 35 of the participants who took metformin were diagnosed with post-COVID, compared to 58 for the placebo group, representing a 40 percent reduction in risk. The trial was conducted between December 2020 and January 2022, meaning it included the Omicron variant, which research has suggested causes post-COVID at a lower rate than previous strains.

The team behind the COVID-OUT trial had previously shown that metformin reduced coronavirus patients’ risk of emergency department visits, hospitalizations and death by more than 40 percent.

Carolyn Bramante, a researcher at the University of Minnesota and the new study’s lead author, told AFP that“our data show that metformin reduces the amount of SARS-CoV-2 virus” in patients. Jeremy Faust, a doctor at Harvard Medical School not involved in the study, said in a comment that if confirmed, the findings are profound and potentially landmark”for post-COVID. The researchers cautioned that they did not test metformin on people who had already been diagnosed with post-COVID, so the findings did not mean it could be used to treat the condition.

1. Why does metformin become the accepted medicine?
A.It’s high efficiency.B.It has a long history.
C.It’s a kind of low-cost medicine.D.It has advantages in many aspects.
2. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.To talk about the aim of the study.B.To show the application of the study.
C.To describe the process of the study.D.To discuss about the benefit of the study. ,
3. What is Jeremy Faust’s attitude towards the study?
A.Positive.B.Negative.C.Unclear.D.Indifferent.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Metformin was used to treat type 2 diabetes.
B.Cheap diabetes drug reduces the risk of post-COVID.
C.Metformin is safe, inexpensive and widely available.
D.Metformin was originally developed from the French lilac flower.

【推荐2】I wished I had known earlier the fact that I was a low achiever because there was a reason beyond my control. Then I needn’t have worked so hard in my late twenties and early thirties. But I just didn’t know that. I was writing and writing. I was working for no other reason than to hear people praise me.

Most people who go through university read at least twice as fast as I do. I can never tell my left from my right. I avoid dialing a telephone if I can help it, because I sometimes have to try three times before getting the number right. I hear that recording “The number you have reached is not in service” more than any man on earth.

Despite my weaknesses I view my dyslexia (difficulty in reading) as a gift, not a curse(诅咒). Many dyslexics are good at right brain, namely abstract thought, and that is what my key of creative writing is. I’m starting with nothing and coming up with something that didn’t exist before. That’s my strong point. I owe my career to Ralph Salisbury, my writing instructor at the University of Oregon, who looked past my misspellings and gave me encouragement and hope. I just carried on and never looked back. I’m also very “visual”. This means nothing in school, but when I write books or scripts, I’m seeing everything in my imagination. I write quickly. I go like the wind and can get up to 15 pages a day. Writing is not the problem. I have no problem downloading; it is inputting where things get messed up.

The real fear I have for dyslexics is not that they have to struggle with messy input, but that they will quit on themselves before they finish school. Parents have to create victories whenever they can, whether it is music, sports or the arts. You want your dyslexic child to be able to say, “Yeah, reading is hard. But I have these other things I can do.”

1. From Paragraph 3 we can know that ______
A.The author was grateful to his writing instructor
B.The author often complained about his dyslexia
C.The author had trouble with both inputting and outputting.
D.Having problem in inputting, the author wrote slowly.
2. For dyslexics, the author thinks that_________.
A.they should work as hard as himself
B.they had better choose to drop out of school
C.they should be constantly encouraged
D.they should put their hearts into reading
3. Which of the following proverbs can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A.He who laughs last laughs best.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Reading enriches the mind.
D.When God closes a door, somewhere he opens a window.
4. What kind of man is the writer?
A.Open-minded and optimisticB.diligent and generous
C.clever but selfishD.kind but useless

【推荐3】Do Weighted Blankets Work?

Sleep is supposed to be a natural thing, but if you wrestle with insomnia (失眠症), you may be tempted to try pieces of equipment that promise better sleep.     1

“They’ve become the sleep tool to have,” says Alanna McGinn, founder and lead sleep expert at Good Night Sleep Site. “I’m a huge supporter of them because they can work so well.”

About 32 percent of Americans don’t get enough sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.     2     Insomnia impacts as many as 35 percent of adults from time to time, while 10 percent have chronic trouble falling and staying asleep.

Choose one that’s around 10 percent of your body weight.     3     Inside is a layer of plastic, glass or metal balls surrounded by filling. McGinn says the blanket’s heaviness acts as a touch therapy called deep pressure stimulation. Just as wrapping babies tightly can send them to sleep, these blankets help your heart and breathing rates slow and your body release feel-good hormones, including serotonin (血清素).

Are they effective? A 2020 review study in the U.S. looked at eight previous studies and concluded that weighted blankets helped reduce anxiety — but not necessarily insomnia.     4     A randomized controlled study in Sweden looked at 120 people with insomnia and also depression or anxiety.     5     People with conditions such as diabetes or breathing issues, however, should check with their doctor before using one. “And if you’re someone who is a little afraid of an enclosed space, it’s probably not the best thing for you,” adds McGinn.

A.It recommends at least seven hours a night for adults.
B.Those who used a weighted blanket slept better and were less tired or anxious.
C.The study found a significant rise in the related symptoms.
D.But other 2020 research tells a slightly different story.
E.One that might sound a little weird but that has been known to work is a weighted blanket.
F.Dealing with such problems can be more or less tricky.
G.Weighted blankets range between two and 14 kilograms.
