When you start a new job, you’ll probably be introduced to a lot of new people on your first day. And it’s important to make a good impression. The following are some practical tips to help you.

Show up early

This might seem easy, but many people don’t do it.    1     .To make sure you can arrive early, give yourself extra time to get ready in the morning and to travel to your destination.

    2

It can be difficult to find the right balance between having an influence on your new role, and disturbing the balance of the delicate office ecosystem. You don’t want to walk in and get into trouble, but you also don’t want to fade into the background, either.

Take plenty of notes

It’s a great idea to bring a small notebook and pen with you on your first day for taking down notes. Don’t be shy about recording information that you know will be useful to you later, like names and passwords. You’re likely to face data-overload on your first day.    3    .

Watch your body language

You’ve probably read that body language is important for job interviews, but it can also be a valuable tool in creating a lasting impression when you start a new job. On your first day, be careful of conveying powerful body language.     4    .And do your best to avoid negative body language, such as yawning, frowning, or standing with your hands in your pockets.

Step away from social media

While on your first day at the office you must have all sorts of feelings—nerves, anxiety, joy, even boredom—resist the desire to share it on social media. When it comes to updating your friends and followers about the status of your newfound employment, always be cautious and assume your bosses are watching.     5    .

A. Almost certainly, they will in fact
B. Be positive and show interest
C. Be enthusiastic, but not overbearing(自大的)
D. Smile often and look people in the eye
E. Body language is what we should avoid
F. Arriving 5 to 10 minutes early gives you time to settle in
G. So taking notes is a great way to keep on top of things

【推荐1】When you garden, you get sunshine, fresh air and exercise.     1     . If you do not have enough space, time or money for a large garden, you can try little container gardens.

Pick the right plants. In your containers, you can control the soil and the amount of water, but not the sunlight.     2     . Avoid plants that need deep soil. For example, potatoes and carrots are not suitable for container gardening since they need deep soil to grow well.

3     . This saves room and some plants may grow better when paired with another plant. However, not all plants grow well together. Some plants have very different water and soil needs. Also, do not grow plants in the same pot if they compete for the same nutrients.

Protect the plants from wind. Wind can damage parts of the plants. It can also dry them out. Choose a location for your garden that has shelter from a building or make your own wind protection.     4     .

Water your plants regularly and put the water directly on the soil. It is best to water early in the morning. If you can’t water the plants in the morning, water them in the late afternoon or early evening.     5     . The water may dry up too fast and water droplets on leaves can burn them.

A.Get the right type of soil
B.Grow different plants in the same pot
C.Find out which plants can grow in the light conditions you have
D.Try not to water the plants during the hottest part of the day
E.Working with soil and plants can bring health benefits, too
F.Gardening can also produce healthy fruits and vegetables for your family

【推荐2】One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)-that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.Boffins have come up with all sorts of strategies to try to remove it, from having their colleagues repeat their work to the “double blinding” common in clinical trials, when even the experimenters do not know which patients are receiving an experimental drug and which are getting a sugar-pill placebo(安慰剂)。

But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results. The point was demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery. Despite being based on the same data, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular piece of kit(工具包)during surgery reduced or increased the chances of infection.

A new paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg, a psychologist at a European School in Berlin, helps shed some light on why. Dr Schweinsberg asked analysts to explore two seemingly straightforward theories. The first was that a woman's tendency to participate would rise as the number of other women in a conversation increased. The second was that high-status participants would talk more than the low-status participants.

As it turned out, no two analysts employed exactly the same methods, and none got the same results. Some 29% of analysts reported that high-status participants were more likely to contribute. But 21% reported the opposite.Things were less finely balanced with the first theory, with 64% reporting that women do indeed participate more, if plenty of other women are present. But 21% concluded that the opposite was true.

The problem was not that any of the analyses were wrong 'in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques. When it came to defining how much women spoke, for instance, some analysts chose the number of words in each woman's comment. Still others defined it by the number of conversations that a woman participated in,regardless of how much she actually said.

【推荐3】What makes a sense of humour is a difficult thing to tell. Different people find different things funny, and what may seem hilarious to some might be highly rude to others. However, having a good sense of humour is important for reducing stress and getting along with others. Therefore, it’s important to think about ways to improve your sense of humour.

Look for the funny side of situations. While it can be difficult at times to find the funny side in unfortunate events when you’re having a bad day, try to think about how the situation might look like to other people, and attempt not to get too angry. Laughing over minor accidents, trips and falls will help you in preventing the loss of temper that you will regret later.

Learn some basic jokes. Some people find it hard to remember jokes, and feel left out when others are telling them. It’s worth trying to learn a few jokes that you can pull out of the bag when you need to, or regularly think about how you can turn a funny situation that occurs in daily life into an entertaining anecdote (趣闻) for later.

Look at jokes or funny cards. There are many different kinds of funny cards available, which can be a great inspiration for finding ways to improve your sense of humour. Giving an appropriate funny card to friends and family on the right occasion will show that you have a good sense of humour and are thinking about them.

Learn from friends. Look at friends that you think have a great sense of humour.   How do they deal with situations, and what kind of jokes do they make? Is there anything you can take away from their actions?
