I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school master is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer. The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette(香烟) in bed. As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unluckily, the cigarette fell into the waste--paper basket. It caught fire.
There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket. It caught fire too. Soon the whole room was burning. The master phoned the fire brigade. The school is a long way from the town and before the fire brigade arrived, the whole school was on fire. The master said that the fire was all my fault and I must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.
I'm very sorry for this.
Much love
Sarah

Fear started taking over, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记)in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered. “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t o bad.

Flagler College
While you’ll find plenty of attractive college campuses with Gothic, Georgian, and Jeffersonian architecture, Flagler College is in a category of its own. Located in historic St. Augustine, Florida, the college’s main building is Ponce de Leon Hall. Built in 1888 by Henry Morrison Flagler, the building features the work of famous nineteenth-century artists and engineers including Tiffany, Maynard, and Edison. The building, one of the most impressive examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture in the country, is a National Historic Landmark.
Princeton University
All eight of the Ivy League schools have impressive campuses, but Princeton University has appeared on more rankings of pretty campuses than any of the others. Located in Princeton, New Jersey, the school covers 500 acres housing over 190 buildings featuring plenty of stone towers and Gothic arches. The campus’s oldest building, Nassau Hall, was completed in 1756. More recent buildings have drawn on architectural heavyweights, such as Frank Gehry, who designed the Lewis Library.
Rice University
Even though the skyline of Houston is easily visible from campus, Rice University’s 300 acres don’t feel urban. The campus’s 4,300 trees make it easy for students to find a shady spot to study. The Academic Quadrangle, a large grassy area, sits at the heart of the campus with the Lovett Hall, the university’s most iconic building, situated on the eastern edge. Fondren Library stands on the opposite end of the quad. The majority of campus buildings were constructed in the Byzantine style.
University of Richmond
The University of Richmond occupies a 350-acre campus on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia. The university’s buildings are mostly constructed from red brick in the Collegiate Gothic style that is popular on so many campuses. Many of the early buildings were designed by Ralph Adams Cram, who also designed buildings for two other campuses on this list: Rice University and Princeton University.

American Rosalind Rolland is the lead scientist on the project. She and her team are with the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts. They measured stress hormones (荷尔蒙 ) by studying baleen, a substance found in the upper part of the mouth of some kinds of whale. She explains that the baleen serves as a record that shows a spike in stress hormones when whales face dangers such as a changing climate and ship strikes. Scientists can then read these records, similar to reading the rings on a tree.
Understanding the information is important because whales who often feel stressed are less likely to be reproductive and more likely to become sick. That combination is not good for the whale population, which is already dangerously low.
The scientists did their work on a whale that had become trapped in fishing equipment, which some scientists estimate kills up to 300, 000 whales and dolphins annually. It was finally killed by Inuit hunters who found it trying to drag the fishing equipment. The hunters said the whale seemed to lack energy. When scientists examined the dead whale, they found its mouth showed an increase in stress hormones 20 times greater than normal.
Regina Asmutis-Silvia is a biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Massachusetts. She didn’t participate in the research, but she says it is important. “We clearly understand that stress is bad for humans. We also need to understand that stress is bad for other animals, too,” she adds.

【推荐1】The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed until 2021. That delay offers a chance for reflection. The International Olympic Committee wants to make the games more popular with young people. To that end, it is introducing new events, such as skateboarding, surfing and climbing. Why not go further and let national teams compete at video games? Electronic sports such as "Fortnite", are vastly more popular than strange Olympic sports like curling(冰壶). In fact, they are more appealing than most mainstream sports. Only 28% of British boys aged 16-19 watch any traditional live sports; 57% play video games.
Some may complain that e-sports are not proper sports. Many parents, observing their teenagers sitting on the sofa all day shouting "Quick, pass me the shotgun!" at a screen, would agree. Yet video games are highly competitive, with professional teams that play to packed stadiums. There are perhaps only 200 tennis stars in the world who can make a living from playing in major competitions. By contrast, "League of Legends", a fantasy game played by teams of five, supports over 1,000 on good wages. Its World Championship final last year was watched by 44 million people.
Those against e-sports offer moral objections, too. They are addictive. Prince Harry has called for "Fortnite" to be banned for this reason. They are violent. At a time of global disharmony, it is bad idea to make virtual(虚拟的)killing an Olympic sport. The Olympics aim to promote peace.
Neither of these arguments is convincing. The idea that an activity, rather than material, can be addictive is controversial among doctors, as is the existence of a causal(因果的)link between gaming and violence. And the belief that warlike sports have no place in the Olympics is hard to agree with history. Wrestling was introduced in 708 BC. It is still there.
1. Why is the International Olympic Committee bringing in new events?A.To replace mainstream sports. | B.To attract more young people. |
C.To make up for the delay. | D.To show innovations. |
A.E-sports are proper games. | B.Tennis has declined greatly. |
C.Tennis players' salary is lower. | D.E-sport players have achieved a lot. |
A.Positive. | B.Skeptical. |
C.Unconcerned. | D.Discouraged. |
A.To introduce how e-sports develop. |
B.To show what benefits e-sports can bring. |

【推荐3】As the three of them approached the waterfalls late in the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Curtis Whitson could tell from the increasing roar (轰鸣)of water in the narrowing valley that they were in serious trouble. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls into something fierce. There was no way they'd be able to sail down the waterfall as planned.
“We've got to do something!” Whitson yelled to his wife, Krystal Ramirez, and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. Then he noticed and grabbed his bright red water bottle and carved “Help!”on it. Ramirez also reminded him that Hunter had a pen and paper in his backpack, with which they played a game. Whitson wrote “We are stuck here@the waterfall. Get help please!” on the paper, put the note into the bottle and threw it over the waterfalls.
They had thought they probably weren't going to get rescued that night. However, at midnight, they heard a helicopter above them. Unfortunately, the pilot didn't find a good place to land. The crew announced that they would come back the next day.
The next morning, the helicopter returned and lowered a crew member on a cable. Then rescuers lifted Hunter, Ramirez, and Whitson out of the valley one by one and put them and their gear (装备)on the closest cliff (悬崖)where the helicopter could safely land.
When the officers dropped them back at the campground, they learned more about the events that had saved them:Two men had seen the water bottle floating in the water. When they picked it up, they noticed the writing on it-“Help!” -which inspired their curiosity. Then they realized there was a note inside. After they read it, they brought it to the campground, turned the bottle in, and took off without leaving their names.
