Dreams can be familiar and strange, fantastical or boring, but some dreams might be connected to the mental processes that help us learn. In a recent study, scientists found a connection between nap-time dreams and better memory in people who were learning a new skill.

In the study, 99 college students between the ages of 18 and 30 each spent an hour on a computer, trying to get through a virtual maze(迷宫).The maze was a different place each time they tried—making it even more difficult. They were also told to find a particular picture of a tree and remember where it was.

For the first 90 minutes of a five-hour break, half of the participants stayed awake and an half were told to take a short nap. Participants who stayed awake were asked to describe their thoughts. Participants who took a nap were asked about their dreams after sleeping—and they were awakened within a minute of sleeping to describe their dreams. Stickgold, a neuroscientist(神经科学家),wanted to know what people were dreaming about when their eyes weren’t moving during sleep.

Four of the 50 people who slept said their dreams were connected to the maze. Some dreamed about the music that had been playing when they were working; Others said they dreamed about seeing people in the maze. When these four people tried the computer maze again, they were able to find the tree faster than before their naps.

Stickgold suggests the dream itself doesn’t help a person learn—it’s the other way around. He suspects that the dream was caused by the brain processes associated with learning.

All four of the people who dreamed about the task had done poorly the first time, which makes Stickgold wonder if the dreams show up when a person finds a new task particularly difficult. People who had other dreams, or people who didn’t take a nap, didn’t show the same improvement.

1. After having a short nap, participants of the experiment were asked to__________.
A.stay in a different place in the maze.
B.try to remember something about their dreams
C.design a virtual maze which is difficult to get through.
D.get through a virtual maze on a computer from the same place
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.Participants who took a nap were required to express their thoughts.
B.Some dreams may encourage people to invent something new.
C.Participants who dreamed about films could finish the task more easily.
D.Participants whose dreams had something to do with the maze could find the tree faster.
3. According to Stickgold, _______.
A.every person may dream about what they learned
B.once people’s eyes stop moving, they are sure to dream about something
C.people’s brain processes may still be connected with their learning in their dreams
D.no matter how fantastical or boring, dreams are connected with people’s life
4. What is the best title for this text?
A.Dreams Are Strange
B.Not All Dreams Are True
C.Dreaming and Memory
D.Stickgold, a Dream Expert

【推荐1】Most brands’ marketing strategies target our vision-think about logos, ads and other symbols. Some try to stimulate us with upbeat music or relaxing sounds. But targeting our noses can be an even more powerful tool for brands, say marketing experts.

An industry, known as scent marketing, is dedicated to developing custom fragrances(香味). ScentAir, for example, is one of the largest sellers of fragrance diffusers(扩散器)to leading brands. The company designs 9 “fragrance experiences” ranging from “luxurious and sophisticated” to “passionate and sensual”. On the flip side, it also tries to mask and neutralize(中和)awful smells from bathrooms or kitchens.

According to Laurence Minsky, a professor from Columbia College Chicago who studies branding, our sense of smell runs straight to our limbic system, and thus deploying a pleasant fragrance in a store can influence customers’ feelings about it and help it stand out in a crowded market. It can also cue up past memories, Minsky said.

The presence of a pleasant scent in stores resulted in a 3% sales increase compared to stores without one, found a study published in The Journal of Marketing. And beyond just being pleasant, the specifics of scent matter. Another study published in The Journal. Of. Retailing found that consumers spent more and purchased more items in stores with a simple orange or lemon scent than in stores with complex scents.

The opportunity to create an ambiance(格调)while increasing sales has led retailers and other businesses to experiment with different scents and create their own fragrance experiences. Brands such as Play-Doh and Johnson & Johnson were some of the first to use scent as a marketing tool. Play-Doh even successfully trademarked its own fragrance in 2018.

Since the 1990s, Singapore Airlines has also been using its own fragrance. Flight attendants wear it as perfume; it is mixed into hot towels served before takeoff and wafts through the cabin during the flight. Hotels such as Hyatt and Westin pump smells into their lobbies, while many supermarkets move their bakeries from the back of the store to the front.

But stores should keep a delicate balance when they engineer their smells. The USA’s subway, for example, has been criticized by some customers for an unpleasant bread smell. When Starbucks introduced breakfast sandwiches in 2008, it found the smell of sandwiches cooking in the oven was overpowering its coffee fragrance.

D.The influence of various scent experiments.
3. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To try out an idea.
B.To issue a warning.
C.To draw a conclusion.
D.To give a piece of advice.
4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Pay attention to your brand image
B.Use smell to get you to spend more
C.Increase sales of fragrance diffusers
D.Attract customers with excellent service

While Mcity can be used to simulate(模拟) many reallife road conditions,it cannot help test gestures drivers use to communicate their intention to other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. To find a solution,US car manufacturer Ford, with researchers from Virginia Tech, firstly considered using text as a way to communicate the car’s intention, but decided it would probably not work universally. The option of using symbols was also discarded, because research shows that a majority of people do not have a good understanding of what they mean.

Finally, the researchers settled on light signals.A white light warned that there were no humans in the car.A slow blinking one indicated that the car was coming to a stop, while a rapidly flashing light cautioned passersby that the car was about to accelerate.

Then came the big challenge—testing the signals on real road.“We needed to try out this new lighting to communicate the intention of the vehicle, but if you’ve got a driver behind the seat, you still have natural communication between humans,” said Andy Shaudt, who led the Virginia Tech research team.“So we needed to make it look like a driverless car.”

The team designed a car seat costume(服装) that the driver would wear to cover his or her face and upper body.Of course, the drivers could see very clearly. The researchers then equipped the car with cameras to capture human reactions to a light bar on the windshield(挡风玻璃),which flashed one of the three signals when appropriate.Six drivers, all keeping their hands low on the wheel so as not to be detected, took turns to test driving the car through the busy streets.

The overall reaction to the flashing lights was very encouraging.Who knew costumes could be useful for more than Halloween?

【推荐3】The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting fossil fuels adds to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional energy, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels.

Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced. Overall, in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison, a power plant producing from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases.

Low costs is another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries. Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling. Besides, geothermal equipment is less big:due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep.

1. Fossil fuels are more expensive than geothermal energy partly because ________.
A.it is free to use geothermal energyB.the production of fossil fuels costs a lot
C.fossil fuels are nearly used upD.geothermal energy doesn’t depend on political situation
2. According to Paragraph 3, what can be concluded from the comparison?
A.Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly.
B.Gas and coal are often used to produce electricity.
C.Coal is much more efficient than gas.
D.The geothermal systems don’t produce harmful gases.
3. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Many countries have benefited from geothermal energy.B.Geothermal energy is well accepted.
C.Fossil fuels are being run out of.D.Geothermal energy has many advantages.
