In recent days, Americans have lost two civil rights leaders of the twentieth century, Dorothy Height and Benjamin Hooks.
Dorothy Height died this Tuesday at the age of ninety-eight. She witnessed more civil rights history than any other African-American leader of her time. She said the greatest change she witnessed was the ending of racial segregation(隔离) laws in the United States.
She was the longtime chairwoman of the National Council of Negro Women. She was an activist, humanitarian and advisor to presidents including Barack Obama. He remembered her as “The godmother of the Civil Rights Movement.”
Dorothy Height grew up in Pennsylvania. She won a four-year college scholarship, the top prize nationally in a public speaking contest on the Constitution.
She arrived at school in New York City-only to learn that an unwritten limit of “two Negro students per year”had already been met. Dorothy Height: “I was accepted at Barnard College and I was denied admission when I arrived because they had a quota(指标) of two. And they did not know that I was not white. And so when I got there I was turned away.”
Dorothy Height went on to earn bachelor and master's degrees in four years at New York University. She worked with Marin Luther King Junior in the push for civil rights for blacks in the nineteen fifties and sixties.
Yet she had to push to make herself heard as a woman among mostly male civil rights leaders. She was the only woman standing nearby as Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington
Dorothy Height received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal for her work for racial and gender equality.

“Compared with food ordered for lunch online, this place is much better.” said Chen Luo, an accountant from a nearby office building. Chen, who lives alone, formerly depended heavily on delivered meals ordered online until her parents raised concerns about the nutritional value and what they called “bad food materials.”
Cooking for herself is too time-wasting, she said. “I used to spend two hours cooking and washing dishes, only to eat for 10 minutes,” Chen said. “The nearby community canteen (餐厅) is a perfect solution. These cafeterias, once known as ‘senior canteens’, were originally built to provide healthy meals at affordable prices to older folks who might not be getting enough nutrition at home. From 2019 to 2021, the Shanghai government set a goal of building 200 new community canteens, bringing the total at the end of last year to 1,608.
A basic meal with one meat dish and two vegetables costs less than 20 yuan (US$2.70), far cheaper than prices in mainstream downtown restaurants. And all meals are prepared on site with fresh materials. The government supports these cafeterias—sometimes with rent-free space; sometimes with reduced water and electricity charges.
Li Jiajun, the manager of a local community canteen, said the prices of the dishes are 20 percent lower than popular market rates because of the government assistance. His canteen provides elderly diners from 10:30—11:30 am and 4:30—5:30 pm. Apart from those hours, people of all ages are welcome.
Li said cafeteria managers are required to maintain detailed records, including 48-hour food samples and daily uploads to food safety platforms. This approach ensures the paths of all materials. Some community cafeterias have become so popular that they appear on WeChat and other lifestyle sharing platforms.

However, a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that drivers age 70 and older were less likely to be involved in a car accident than those 35 to 54.
The study, published in June in The Journal of Safety Research, recorded a 43 percent drop in accidents among drivers 70 and older from 1997 to 2018. For middle-aged drivers, the decline in accidents was half that, 21 percent. Although seniors rarely drove as far as younger drivers did, older adults had better safety records per mile driven. In 2017, for the first time ever, drivers 70 and older had fewer crashes reported to the police than middle-aged drivers, the institute found.
The study’s authors credited two major factors for the improved safety record of older drivers: Seniors today are healthier than in decades past, and most are operating safer vehicle. To that, I would add, they’re helped by significant safety improvements in roadway design. For example, when stop signs or traffic lights were replaced by roundabouts at crossroads, overall crashes dropped 37 percent, injury crashes by 75 percent, and deaths by 90 percent.
Still, there’s no question that an aging mind and body can compromise driving safety. Flexibility and reaction time necessarily decline as-we get-older. Age-related health challenges that can worsen driving ability include arthritis (关节炎), hearing loss and dementia (痴呆). The most important lesson for older drivers is to acknowledge (承认) such changes and know how to make up for them if possible.
Brenda Vrkljan, a specialist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, is doing what she can to help older adults continue to drive safely by monitoring where and when they drive and how they behave behind the wheel.
A program called Candrivee which Dr Vrkljan helped establish, is tracking the driving patterns of older adults to assess what changes might improve safety. She and colleagues are placing cameras in aging drivers’ cars to record their unsafe missteps, like failing to check mirrors before changing lanes or not stopping soon enough. Afterward, the drivers can view the video, offering them an opportunity to bear witness to their limitations.
1. What can we learn from the recent study?A.Accidents among middle-aged drivers have been increasing since 1997. |

C.Reasons for better safety record among older drivers. | D.Advantages of replacing stop signs at crossroads. |
A.improve | B.weaken | C.ensure | D.balance |
A.To help older people to pass a driving test more easily. |
B.To decide whether older drivers can continue driving. |
C.To study why older drivers fail to check mirrors before changing lanes. |
D.To provide a chance for older drivers to improve their driving. |

Play is a crucial element of friendship with children. With babies and very young children, we parents play with them, engaging in back-and-forth activities like hide-and-seek and tower building.
But delight hits a setback when our child learns how to say “no”. From this point onward —into adolescence —we focus on getting a child to behave.
While parents must help children learn to meet adult demands, when we limit our parenting focus to “command and control” we can crowd out “delight”.
A.They often start the game, and we join in. |
B.Kids won’t always want you to play with them. |
C.We are told in many ways to be the parent, not the friend. |
D.Highlighting our role as taskmasters limits our parenting tools. |

His team spent 45 days fixing pitches on a course more than 3, 000 feet high. They used siege tactics (攻城术) to link camps, coming down for school and work. But then they launched a 12-day final push, which they completed on November 12, 1958. “It’s really like walking on the moon,” author and climber John Long said. “There’re certain things that are influential. Not just for climbers or surfers or astronauts, but for all mankind. And that was one of them. It revolutionized what everybody thought was possible.”
“He never mentioned what he’d done unless somebody asked,” Whitmore’s wife Nancy said. “He didn’t go around and say, Oh, I was the first person to climb The Nose of El Capitan.” But if you really asked George, his greatest accomplishment wasn’t the climb up El Capitan, Nancy said. It would be the decades he spent advocating for conservation.
Whitmore helped establish the Kaiser Wilderness — a protected area located 70 miles northeast of Fresno — in 1976. He helped bring the California Wilderness Act of 1984 into effect, adding 1. 8 million acres into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Whitmore was a part of efforts by the Sierra Club to prevent The Wait Disney Company from developing a ski resort at Mineral King in the 1960s. The project was stopped, and the site became part of Sequoia National Park.
He often weighed in on development in the area. Lawmakers about conservation learned to trust him because they knew that he would not just say something off the top of his head. And if he didn’t know, he would say, “I don’t know and I’ll find out,” Nancy said.
“He was a climber but that was secondary,” she added. “His love of the wilderness is the most important gift that he has left us.”

After graduating from the Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural University in Daqing, Heilongjiang province, in 1996, Zhang has been working as a researcher at the Xiangyang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hubei province. Though the working conditions and incomes she received at that moment were not satisfying, she ploughed on and devoted herself to the research of wheat varieties.
Agricultural research work was hard and complicated. First she led her colleagues to suitable parental types for a specific cultivation purpose. Then, the team tried a hybrid combination. After several generations of trial and selection, and when characteristics remained steady, they began a two-year process of yield testing and disease identification. After several more rounds of tests, an application for evaluation and approval was made to provincial or national authorities for market production.
The wheat varieties developed by Zhang and her colleagues have been grown on 2 million hectares of farmland and have generated net profits of over 100 million yuan. One of them produces large seed heads and is highly resistant to stripe rust; another is highly resistant to pre-harvest sprouting, which results in a decrease of the grain yield.
Today, the 50-year-old, known as the “mother of wheat”, still works on the land. She considers it her responsibility to work hard and contribute to food safety, especially when the domestic and global economy still face headwinds from the COVID-19 pandemic. “Agricultural research work is hard and complicated. All we can do is think more, discuss more, ask more questions and find answers on the land.” she said.

Toledo, who has made decorations for the musical “Evita” on Broadway, was among the first in Argentina to be infected by COVID-19, which left him hospitalized for eight days. The experience led to a series of artworks, including a 14-meter mask with the Argentine flag that he placed on the famous Obelisk in Buenos Aires to raise awareness about organ donation during the pandemic.
For his new exhibition, the “Museum of the After,” Toledo is collecting recycled coronavirus waste sent by hospitals, laboratories and random people, including old medical parts and newspapers about the pandemic.
“I am excited to be able to transform pain into beauty and this. exhibition is just recording everything that is happening to us as a society,” Toledo said. The artworks, which will go on show from September in a public space in downtown Buenos Aires, will all be made from waste materials or garbage that people send him. “It is the first time that I have done an exhibition in which I do not have to buy any of the elements,” he said.
In the exhibition there will be a real ship that will symbolically cross a “storm” and recycling islands to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the environment. “The exhibition will tell the story of this ship that went on sailing after the storm, which is a great metaphor (隐喻) for what is happening to us. This pandemic is a great global storm,” Toledo said.
As with the huge mask, which was replicated (复制) in countries such as the United States and Japan, the artist dreams of replicating the new exhibition in other cities around the world.

Just have a bite of our organic apples and place your orders here!” Erik Nilsson, a Swedish traveler, greeted through Tik Tok livestreams in a village of Jiangxi Province. His appearance online increased that day’s sale greatly. After experiencing a special day in the rural area, Erik said jokingly, “I wish I could change my job.”
This village is not alone. Nowadays, China’s e-commerce platforms have helped open up the market for Chinese farmers’ produce, bringing an increasing number of sales online. This new trend has made livestreaming a new way to rid farmers of poverty, with mobile phones becoming “new farm tools”.
“Everyone has brought their own agricultural products. How can you make the audiences believe that they’re delicious through the screen in front of you? Now, let’s feel the look on your face during the livestreaming!” A farmers’ education and training center in Hainan Province invites professionals such as directors and stylists to teach farmers a variety of skills ranging from short video editing to livestreaming sales skills. “However, at first, only a few villagers had a strong desire. We helped them get training in livestreaming, short video marketing, and other courses. It wasn’t fancy, but simple, practical, and effective.”
“Everybody, please take a look. This is the best coconut. Taste it,” said Pei Yanqin, 59, speaking Mandarin with a strong local accent and communicating smoothly with netizens through her livestreaming software. Just over a year ago, she was one of those villagers with the least intention to get training.
In 2018, the demonstration project of national e-commerce for rural areas was launched. Today, the village has developed eight e-commerce livestreaming courtyards. Some presenters work alone, while others are husband and wife teams. In the next step, the government will train more farmer presenters and develop in the direction of multi-variety sales.

Meller is watching the building of all Ai-Da’s parts by engineers at Engineered Arts, a company based in Cornwall, England. The engineers believe the robot will be able to make pictures of people from sight with a writing instrument in her hand. Meller wants the robot to perform like a human artist.
After seeing Ai-Da’s head being carefully brought to life by specialists who were connecting individual hairs to form eyebrows, Meller said, “She’s going to actually be drawing and we’re hoping to then build technology for her to paint.” But also as a performing artist, “she’ll be able to communicate with audiences and actually get messages across, asking those questions about technology today,” he added.
Ai-Da’s robotic head may still be separate from her body, but her movements are very alive. Cameras in each of her eyeballs recognize human body parts. Ai-Da will make eye contact and follow you around the room, opening and closing her mouth as you do. If you get too close, the robot will back away, closing and then opening her eyes as if in shock.
The specialists are using the company’s Mesmer lifelike robot technology to create her head. Once finished, Ai-Da will have a mixed-race appearance, with long dark hair and manmade skin. The teeth and skin inside her mouth will come from a 3-D printer. Marcus Hold works at Engineered Arts. He said Mesmer “brings together the development of software mechanics and electronics to produce a lifelike face with lifelike gestures in a small human sized package.”

The government has arranged Spot, a yellow and black robotic dog made by Boston Dynamics Company, at one local park. The same robot has been previously seen dancing to hit song “Uptown Funk.”However, 2020 is an extremely difficult year and the company is trying to assist the national coronavirus-control effort. In turn, the job has been handed over to Spot.
The four-legged robot dog patrols(巡查) the park and broadcasts a pre-recorded message to encourage visitors to observe safe distancing measures. As it walks around the park, the dog says in a female voice, “Let's keep Singapore healthy. For your own safety and for those around you, please stand at least one meter apart. Thank you.”
Spot is one of the world's most advanced robots and unlike wheeled robots, it is capable of going pretty much anywhere a dog can go and can walk up to three miles per hour over different areas, making it ideal for operation in public parks and gardens. Furthermore, it is remotely controlled and has cameras with 360-degree vision and analytic tools to scan the surroundings and help officials estimate the number of people gathering in the park.
For now, the pilot project is currently set to run in a limited trial for two weeks at one park during off-peak(非高峰)hours. But if all goes well, authorities will consider expanding the program to improve enforcement(强制)of social distance throughout on Singapore
