We all love animals, but animals don’t feel the same way about us. When we enter their wild world, we are “unnatural” invaders into their homes.
There was a video many of you may have seen on the Internet recently of a bear and its cub (幼崽) climbing up a steep, snow-covered hill in Russia. The mama bear makes it to the top without too much trouble, but the baby bear keeps sliding back down. It takes three attempts to reach the top and, no doubt, many cheered at the cub’s never-give-up spirit. But nature scientists who saw the video didn’t cheer.
Instead, the scientists were upset that the two bears had been frightened into making a dangerous, unnecessary climb by the drone (无人机) that was filming them. Sophie Gilbert of the University of Idaho said, “It showed a complete lack of understanding from the drone operator of the effects his actions were having on the bears.” Other scientists have found that when a drone is hovering near, a bear’s heart rate can increase from 41 beats per minute to 162 beats per minute — a high enough rate to cause a heart attack.
Human disturbance has actually been having a far-reaching influence on wildlife. Researchers at the University of Berkeley recently found that many mammals are turning into “night owls” again to avoid contact with humans. Such a shift might not only affect those species themselves, but also have numerous chain effects.
We human beings find ourselves in a strange position in nature. We are part of it but also separate from it, now more than ever, since most of us live in cities. So, when we go off hiking into wild areas to “re-connect” with nature, we should go softly and considerately. It’s OK to get close to our animal friends, just not too close — we wouldn’t want to scare them, would we?

The Smithsonian Institution says that "there are more insect species that have not been described(named by science)than there are insect species that have been previously named. "Flies are particularly diverse: more than 124,000 species have been identified, but scientists suspect countless more are awaiting discovery.
The Amazon is home to at least 10 percent of the world's known biodiversity and hundreds of thousands of insect species. But it's an uncertain time for the rainforest and for insects.
A 2019 study suggested that about a third of insect species would be vulnerable to extinction in the next few decades, a result of habitat loss from intensive agriculture, pesticide and fertilizer pollution, and climate change, among other factors. And in Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro has been actively promoting development of the Amazon, more than 300,000 square miles of which has been lost to industry since the 1970s.
Although it's common for scientists to find new insects in the Amazon, the number of unfamiliar fly species caught in the tower traps of insects was surprising. Moreover, many species appeared only in traps set above the ground level. Almost two-thirds of fly diversity is present in the 8- to 32-meter traps, but not in the soil. That means quite a lot of loss when big trees are cut down.
Many of the mystery flies seemed to be phorids(蚤蝇), creatures the size of a few grains of salt, some of which lay their eggs in bees, ants, and other insects.
Brown, one of the world's leading experts on the family Phoridae, knew he needed to see these new phorid species in the wild for himself—and as quickly as possible. "I always feel like we're one farmer and a machete(大砍刀)away from losing a whole bunch of species," he said.

Different from some animals like snakes, the sex of the baby sea turtles, called hatchlings , is determined by the environment after fertilization (受精). The temperature of the eggs during a certain period of development is the deciding factor in determining sex, and small changes in temperature can cause very big changes in the sex ratio (比例). Often, eggs at low temperatures (22—27℃) produce males, while eggs at higher temperatures (30℃ and above) produce females. At temperatures in 29℃, which is good for a balanced sex ratio of turtle hatchlings. If temperature reaches 36℃, no hatchlings will be produced.
Climate change has a powerful effect on turtle nesting (筑巢) sites. It changes sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of the hatchlings. Scientists have found that unusually warm temperatures caused by climate change are upsetting the normal ratios, resulting in fewer male hatchlings. The past four hottest summers in Florida have seen only female sea turtles. And an Australian study has shown a similar effect in which 99% of the hatchlings are female.
In addition to rising temperatures, turtles are also facing the threat of too much plastic in the oceans, along with a number of other threats. “Plastic pollution is a problem for turtles as they can mistake plastics for food easily. Even a single piece of plastic can kill a turtle,” Dr Couper, working at the Queensland Museum, said. “We have collected some plastics taken from turtles’ stomachs to show people what kinds of things are showing up on beaches. I want it to be an eye opener.”

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy. It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

Why am I even on the team?" he said. "My perfectionism prompted very high expectations, and that caused real suffering," he said.
Cherkasky is not alone in feeling that perfectionism can cause anxiety. So many millennials (千禧一代)suffer from the problems of being a perfectionist that psychologists are issuing warnings and schools are emphasizing the need to accept failure.
Jessica Pryor, a leading psychologist, said every generation is a sponge (海绵)for the messages it receives. "Millennials, more than any other generation in American society, are receiving clear messages about achieving," she said. "But there's an absence of the message that trying your hardest is still OK."
In college, Cherkasky found himself surrounded by so many intelligent people that he felt he should have been achieving a higher level than he was. "It makes you feel kind of crazy." he said. This type of thinking can lead people to putting in less effort, which as they fall behind, can create more anxiety. "It makes people feel kind of isolated." And that Cherkasky added, "can cause students to distance themselves from their school".
The American Psychological Association also found out that recent generations of college students have reported higher levels of perfectionism than earlier generations.
Researchers noted that social media adds pressure, along with the drive to earn money and achieve career goals. Perfectionists often create even higher goals, which can lead to a higher risk of failure.

Louis de Jaucourt describes hospitality in the Encyclopédia as the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole earth through the ties of humanity.
Hospitality originated (起源) from the Latin hospes, which means “stranger” or “enemy”. In the West today hospitality is rarely a matter of protection and survival and is more related to politeness and entertainment. However, it still involves showing respect for one’s guests, providing for their needs, and treating them as equals. It is expected to show hospitality to strangers, rather than to personal friends or members of one’s ingroup.
In ancient Greece, hospitality was a guest’s divine right, with the host being expected to make sure the needs of his guests were met. The ancient Greek term xenia, or theoxenia when a god was involved, expressed this ritualized (仪式化的) guest-friendship relation. In Greek society a person’s ability to obey the laws of hospitality determined nobility and social standing.
In India, hospitality is based on the principle “the guest is God”. This principle is shown in a number of stories where a guest turned out to be a god who rewards the provider of hospitality. From this originates the Indian practice of graciousness towards guests at home and in all social situations.
Celtic (凯尔特人的) societies also valued the concept of hospitality, especially in terms of protection. A host was expected not only to provide food and shelter for his/her guests, but to make sure they did not come to harm while under their care.

Aquaculture has made fish more affordable for consumers around the world, popularizing the consumption of what used to be expensive, and easing the pressure on hard-pressed wild stocks. Aquaculture also has many clear environmental benefits: compared with other ways of growing animal protein, it uses little or no land, and has low greenhouse emissions. And while the world has traditionally had a bad record of regulating wild fishing, fish farming generally occurs within the boundaries of governments, meaning it should, in theory, be much easier to ensure that good practices are upheld.
Crowding large numbers of fish into limited spaces means that waste products, including waste, uneaten food and dead fish, are poured into the surrounding waters, polluting them. Besides, the pesticides and drugs used to treat conditions that upset fish in concentrated numbers can also affect local wildlife. Many farmed fish are fed on other fish, so the industry also puts pressure on wild stocks:about a fifth of all caught fish, some 18 million tonnes, is used for fish oil and fishmeal production. There is also the problem of fish escaping, with potentially dangerous effects on surrounding ecosystems.
In 2018 the Scottish Parliament’s environment committee published a report into the fish farming industry’s environmental effects, stating that key problems simply hadn’t been tackled, and that the Scottish government’s plan to double salmon output by 2030 could cause“irrecoverable damage”to ecosystems. Since then, protections have been toughened. There is now more pressure from regulators to situate farms in remote, deep-water locations. Meanwhile, though, catches of Scottish wild salmon have fallen to their lowest level since records began in 1952. “There are good reasons for fish farming and real dangers to it as well. ”concludes an official. “The question is how to make it work. ”
1. How has fish farming benefited people?A.It has many clear environmental effects. |

We thought science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of fulfillment and opportunity for all. However, as we have gained a deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us, from epidemic (流行病) flu to climate change, we might even tend to assume that humanity has little future to look forward to.
Yet such depression is misplaced. The fossil record shows that many species have existed for millions of years—so why shouldn’t we? Take a look at our species in the universe, and it becomes clear we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens of thousands of years. Look up Homo sapiens (智人) in the “Red List” of threatened species of the International Union for the Conversation of Nature (IUCN), and you will read: “Listed as Least Concern because the species is widely distributed, adaptable, currently increasing, and there are no major threats resulting in an overall population decline.”
So what does our deep future hold? Many researchers and organizations are now thinking seriously about the question. The potential evolution of today’s technology is complicated, so it’s perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists to explore the possibilities of the bright future.
Our future is quite rosy because it shows many promising possibilities of achievement. Besides, we are now knowledgeable enough to reduce risks that threatened the existence of earlier humans and to improve those to come. Take a longer view and we can say with considerable assurance that the past holds the key to the future: by analyzing the past, we can make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our descendants (后代) will find themselves.

"Coco helped me feel better," says Allison, who was recovering from 14 months of treatment for a brain cancer at the time. “She would cuddle (偎依)with me when I didn't want to play." Allison loved Coco so much that she told her parents she wanted to help other sick kids find the same kind of comfort.
She started small, raising money by selling lemonade and homemade dog biscuits in front of her house. Her first customer was the mailman. By the end of that summer, she had raised nearly $1,000, enough to adopt and train two dogs and give them to children with cancer. Now, a little more than two years later, some groups gather to make dog treats for Allison's cause.
Her organization, the Stink Bug Project, named after a picture she drew in memory of the end of her treatment, is run and managed in partnership with the Morgan Adams Foundation. Stink Bug helps families adopt pets from the Trained K9 Companion Program, where the rescued dogs are taught commands. Allison's mother, Dianna Litvak, who helps run Stink Bug, hopes to extend the pet-adoption program statewide and continue donating some of the money to help fund children's cancer research.
"Allison has figured out how to help — in a way that no one else has," Litvak says. "We involve her younger sister, Emily, her friends, the adopting families, and some others. It took the love of a little girl to wrap all that together into one amazing package."

A good story is an important criterion, under which 95 film scripts may be less than adequate. Eventually we have five good stories to enter our final considerations. In this case, an additional criterion should be considered if the story gives strong messages about our Chinese culture. If so, we may undertake it. But if not, why should we bother to make a film that filmmakers from other nations can also produce?”
Smash hit The Wandering Earth is based on works by Liu Cixin, who has tried to create an obviously Chinese style of science fiction. Also, critics owe the film’s domestic success to its unique cultural context because it tells a story Chinese people are quite familiar with. For instance, the Chinese people in the film wanted to help make the Earth move as it was coming to a stop. Some critics have pointed out that this plot point is linked with Chinese farming culture.
Regarded as a science fiction director, Guo continued to say that a style of Chinese sci-fi film hasn’t been set up yet. He believes that China is not ready to make ‘soft’ sci-fi films, which put more focus on characters, culture and sociology.
“There’s a logical order in it. We may find there are both lots of soft and hard science fiction films in Hollywood. But the hard sci-fi movie, a category characterized by focusing on scientific accuracy and logic, came first to serve as a foundation,” Guo said. “Hollywood filmmakers spent decades making hard sci-fi movies, which paved the way for the growth of soft sci-fi films afterwards. China is still young in making sci-fi films.”
There’s a whole new world in sci-fi film. Moviegoers will first have to believe in such a world before getting interested in it. “So, gaining their trust is important, otherwise they wouldn’t be interested in the characters as well as their emotions in the films,’’ Guo Fan said.

People were always comparing our personalities and academic performances as well! These constant comparisons made me decide not to go to the same university as my twin brother.
That is not to say we didn’t have good academic experiences in the past or didn’t get along. In eleventh grade, we were placed in the same class. I recall arriving early to the first class and being a bit disappointed when I saw David already seated at his desk. It was hard to avoid comparisons when we were in the same class. However, we found that we actually worked well together, in our own way. We would argue about the best way to solve a problem and debate its answer. As the year went on, I noticed that our teacher kept moving us closer and closer together. Our argument was actually productive.
However, we were two very different individuals. I was very involved in after-school activities, while David had better test scores than I did. I’m fond of writing while David enjoys playing computer games. I am currently studying English and French at McGill University, while David is studying computer science at Union College.
Besides escaping comparisons, there have been other benefits to going to different universities. The first one is that we are forced to talk to each other, as we no longer see each other every day. This is healthier for our relationship. The second, also the more important one, is that after having so many similar experiences together we can have our own experiences separate from one another. Going to a different university has benefited me thus far. It allows for more personal growth, and I’m not attached to the label of being a twin.

President Clinton arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not changed his culture gears. His failure to follow Korean customs gave the impression that Korea was not as important to him as Japan.
In addition to Koreans, some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names. This practice often puzzles(使困惑) English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil’s parents. They become puzzled about the student’s correct last name.Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian cultures.
