A new computer program is being praised as a life-changer for blind people. The new program is known as the KNFB Reader app. It can help users listen to the sound of printed materials.
The application software program costs $99. It is the product of a long relationship between the National Federation of the Blind and Ray Kurzweil, a computer scientist and an employee of Google.
The KNFB Reader makes use of new pattern recognition and image-processing technology, and new hardware for smartphones. People using the app can adjust or change the position of the camera and read printed materials out loud.
Mr Kurzweil started working on what he called “reading machines” in the early 1970s. The idea came after speaking with a blind person who expressed frustrations with the lack of technology to help blind people. His first reading machine was the size of a washing machine. It cost $50,000. The technology has continued to improve over the past 20 years. The. new smartphene app can recognize and take a printed material in one language and change it to another language. But it was not available on a mobile device until now. In the past, it cost more than $1,000 to use he software app with a camera and a mobile phone.
Blind people say the app will make life much easier and it will help with everything from reading restaurant menus to studying papers in the classroom. Users say the app has given some people greater independence. One user, named Gordon Luke, reported that he was able to use the app to read his voting card for the recent vote in Scotland.
Bryan Bashin leads the non-profit group Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco. He is also blind. He says the KNFB app shows the positive impact that technology can have and there are times in his life when he wishes the KNFB app were available to him. He adds that the ability to gain information quickly with something that fits in your pocket will be what he calls “a game changer”.

But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.
The designer says he comes up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be all right to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said.
The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella in need. Sensors then ensure that the umbrella offers the pedestrians (行人) shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough protection for several people. Being installed (安装) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be fixed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies.

“Years ago, flavor was a table with two legs — taste and odor (气味),” Terry E. Acree, PhD, who is with Cornell University’s Department of Food Science, told National Geographic. “Now we are beginning to understand that flavor depends on parts of the brain that involve not only taste, smell and touch, but vision. These signals, plus our emotions and past experiences, result in perception (感受) of flavors, and decide whether we like or dislike foods.”
A good example of “the first bite is taken with the eye” is that if we were shown two plates of strawberries, one red and the other pinkish, the majority of us would be attracted to red because “it signals ripeness, sweetness and calories”, explained The Guardian.
The findings of a German study seem to back this up. Its subjects said wine tasted 50 percent sweeter if drunk under red light, rather than under blue or white.
In another study published in the journal Flavour, scientists found that the color of your coffee mug (马克杯) can change the way your coffee tastes, reported The Washington Post. And it is not just the color of the food that matters.
Specifically, a white mug was associated with a more “intense” (or bitter) tasting cup of coffee, while a clear glass mug was not.
A blue mug, meanwhile, was “kind of an intermediate (中等的)”, Charles Spence, an experimental psychologist at Oxford University, told the newspaper.
The opposite was true for perceived sweetness — the participants tasted less sweetness when they drank from a white mug than they did when they drank from both a blue mug and a clear glass mug.
It’s also possible that certain colors are associated with certain experiences. In the case of coffee, the researchers believe the color brown might be something people associate with bitterness.
“A white mug may have affected the perceived brownness of the coffee and this, in turn, may have affected the perceived intensity (and sweetness) of the coffee,” the researchers wrote.
1. Which of the following statements might Terry E. Acree agree with most?A.The flavor of food mainly depends on taste and smell. |
B.The link between flavor and vision has not been proved yet. |

D.Our perception of flavor has nothing to do with our past experiences. |

【推荐3】For as long as humans have been monitoring the ocean, the only way we’ve known about stranded (搁浅的) whales was to come across them ourselves. But knowing about stranded whales — including where and when they strand — is important.
Largely due to human causes such as ship strikes and pollution, whale strandings are on the rise. Their occurrence can often signal that something is wrong before larger ecosystem problems arise. Yet the ground-based networks used to monitor stranded whales are just available for wealthy countries.
A new study conducted by Penny Clarke, a graduate student with the British Antarctic Survey, shows that very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery makes it possible to spot stranded whales in remote areas where it may otherwise take weeks to find them. By that point, animals are often long decomposed (腐烂的), making it too late to figure out what caused the stranding or take action to fix it.
The first satellite with VHR sensors was launched in 1999. With the number of them now slowly climbing, Clarke’s team sees this sort of imagery as a tool that allows less-wealthy countries to monitor a vast area with just a few people.
However, the satellite approach does have some limitations. As Clarke found, images may not be available for the date range researchers want; there are currently only 27 VHR satellites circling Earth. Moreover, satellites only take photos when given orders to open their lenses. Tasking a satellite is expensive, and even accessing archived (存档的) images can come with a big price tag.
Additionally, identifying whales requires manually (人工地) scanning for the right shapes, frame (帧) by frame. In 2019, a team led by Clarke’s co-author, Peter Fretwell, tried to automate this process. They found that because dead whales change so drastically as they decompose, their way wasn’t very accurate. It often confused whales with features like rocks or washed-up trees.
Next up, Clarke hopes to test the effectiveness of satellite monitoring by working on the ground with experts during stranding events so that she can see for herself what satellite imagery misses. “We don’t know enough about some of these challenges weepers going to be coming up against,“ she says. Yet the potential for this technology excites her immensely. “It’s quite literally out of this world.”
