TikTok has pushed a new safety update in November to its app that allows parents to take more control of their teenager's accounts, as social media companies come under increasing pressure to make their platforms safer for children.
The company said Tuesday that its “Family Pairing” feature now enables parents to turn off comments on their children's videos entirely or to limit them to friends only. Parents whose accounts are linked to their kids will also be able to set their accounts to private, turn off the search function for content, users or sounds, and limit who can see which videos their children have liked.
Launched (发布) in March, the Family Pairing tool lets parents see how long their children are spending on TikTok each day and limit the content they can see.
TikTok allows children to register and create an account if they're over the age of 13. All they need to do is provide their date of birth. However, because TikTok doesn't require registers to prove their identities, some children under 13 have registered by lying about their age, according to U. K. regulator Ofcom (英国通讯管理局).
Alexandra Evans, head of child safety public policy for TikTok in Europe, told CNBC that Family Pairing has “put itself in parents’ shoes” since it was launched.
“If we're thinking about it as a toolbox, we wanted to offer more tools,” she said on a video call ahead of the announcement.

Well, sort of. This Dali is brought to life through the magic of artificial intelligence. It’s a newly opened exhibition called “Dali lives”, and it is more than 2,000 Dali works in about 20,000 square feet of exhibit space. Three video boards showing a life-size Dali, standing 5’8’’tall, form the exhibit — one at the museum gate, one on the third floor by the main exhibits (including Dali’s paintings and photographs, two technologically treated paintings allowing visitors to put themselves inside the paintings, and a special experience of “walking” through Dali’s 1934 painting “Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s Angelus”) and one in the gift shop on the way out. Each one offers a different experience when you push a doorbell on the board to get Dali’s attention.
The most surprising thing about “Dali Lives” is that you’re dealing with a version of the artist himself. It looks like Dali, it sounds like Dali, it is Dali. The museum worked together with the San Francisco advertising agency Goodby Silvrstein&Partners to achieve this, feeding hundreds of new interviews and words from his written works into an artificial intelligence system to recreate the artist. The result was a living, moving version of Dali ready to converse with anyone there, answering their questions.
“Dali himself was at the forefront of technology and was always experimenting with and trying new things,” says Beth Bell, marketing director at the Dali Museum. “we think he would have loved these types of things. It’s in the spirit of Dali himself.

The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all using technologies that only travel about 800 feet from a cell site, which means there isn’t much coverage. All four carriers are waiting for upgrades(升级)to their base stations that will improve coverage, speed, and reliability. Around the end of this year or the beginning of 2020, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all intend to launch 5G networks that use the existing 4G spectrum(频谱), which will have slower speeds but broader coverage.
We’ve tested AT&T in Dallas and Las Vegas Sprint in Dallas and New York; Verizon in Chicago, New York, and Providence; and T-Mobile in New York. Every month, we’ve been seeing better performance and more new devices. It’s messy. It’s very early days. And if you like new technology, it’s very exciting.
In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement. Take 4G, for instance. The first 4G phones in the US appeared in 2010. But the sorts of 4G applications that changed our world didn’t appear until later. So following that plan. While we’re getting a little bit of 5G right now, you should expect the big 5G applications to crop up around 2021 or 2022.
5G stands for fifth-generation-cellular(蜂窝状的)wireless, and the initial standards of it were set at the end of 2017. But a set of standards doesn’t mean that all 5G will work the same-or that we even know what applications 5G will enable. There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.

A recent study, like nearly all previous studies on this subject, found that teaching kids how to label the bits and pieces in a sentence does not make them better writers. Other observers may begin to wonder whether the National Curriculum, which since 2014 has made grammar such a central part of its English programme, might have gone down a blind alley.
The promoter of the curriculum, a former secretary of education, Michael Gove, insisted on the insertion of personal preference into the grammar curriculum, notably the subjunctive form, “If I were”. Mention of his name alone wrinkles many teachers’ noses — partly because some of them were hardly prepared to teach the new material themselves after decades in which grammar was largely absent from classrooms.
In reflection, it seems unsurprising that learning to underline a modal verb, such as “can”, “should” and “may”, does little to help students use them effectively in their own writing. These words are anyway grasped by tiny children without the need to know what they are called. This may lead to the conclusion that the teaching of grammar should be shelved altogether. However, it shouldn’t be abandoned, though it should be reformed.
There are practical reasons for teaching and learning grammar. One is that an explicit knowledge of it will make learning a foreign language easier. If you did intuit (直觉上知道) how to make subordinate clauses in your mother tongue, getting to grasp them in a foreign language in later years is simpler if you know how to define and spot them.
For grammarians keen on the jobs of the future, the field of natural language processing is booming. Technological talents have invented programs for automated translation, speech recognition and other services that are actually usable, even if far from perfect. These tools may rely more on knowledge of AI than of grammar, but linguistic expertise (专门技能) still matters.
Grammar could still be taught better. One small study showed improvement in some students when concepts were linked concretely to writing tasks. Therefore, the science of how words combine to make meaning is fascinating as well as fundamental.

At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are holding firmly at one another’s hands for confidence.
They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager, to stand up against the popularity wave and to his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself.

It was beginner’s French, and from day one she had a “no English” class rule. I was confused by 99% of what she said, but I decided to give it a shot. I was excited as we began learning numbers and the alphabet, something I could easily follow, but when it came to putting together phrases, I was lost.
My teacher came up to me and said “quel est votre passe-temps favori?” which sounded like complete nonsense to me. I knew she was asking me a question, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. So I said “Sorry, I don’t understand.” Well, that broke the “no English” rule, so I just froze because I had no idea as to how to apologize in French.
So what did she do? She kept getting closer to me, repeating ‘quel est votre passe-temps favori?’ over and over, each time a bit louder, as if I had a hearing problem, rather than a complete shortage of comprehension.
I think about that class often. I really did feel hopeless, and the laughter from everyone else in class didn’t help. It’s not that she was a bad teacher. It’s just that she had very little patience for students like me who didn’t catch on immediately.
Well, it taught me to be more patient with Laika when learning new things. And since I don’t want her to be like the embarrassed kid in class, I don’t speak loudly at her or repeat myself when she doesn’t “get it.” I go back and figure out how I can help her understand and put meaning to my requests.

“The Swedish Academy received a personal letter from Bob Dylan yesterday where he explained that he could not make himself available in December.”, it said in a statement.
“He wishes that he could accept the award personally, but other commitments make it unfortunately impossible. He underlined that he feels incredibly honored by the Nobel prize,” it added. The Swedish Academy said it respected Dylan’s decision, but that it was “unusual” for a Nobel laureate not to come to Stockholm to accept the award in person. Nobel laureates are honored every year on December 10--the death anniversary of the prize’s founder Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist, inventor and philanthropist.
Several other literature prize winners have skipped the Nobel ceremony in the past for various reasons-British writer Doris Lessing on grounds of ill health,British playwright Harold Pinter because he was hospitalized and Austrian playwright and novelist Elfriede Jelinek due to social phobia.

Ms. Raouf, from south London, won a special “bare-face” round of the competition last week, strengthening her place in the final between 40 contestants on 17 October. But while previous winners of this round have returned to wearing make-up for the final, she will not. And if she wins, she says she will leave it off for the Miss World competition, hoping to “inspire the world”.
“I wanted to prove we have a choice,” she tells BBC News. Since last week’s bare-face round, Ms. Raouf has been “overwhelmed” by positive messages on social media. At her early age, Ms. Raouf was “significantly insecure”, and found comparing herself to the “unrealistic standard of beauty” shown on social media had a negative impact on her mental health. But as she got older she gained confidence-and she thinks taking part in the beauty contest, while “very scary” at the time, has increased this.
Ms. Raouf does not object to wearing make-up in general, and will still do so on other occasions. She only wants girls to place more value on their “inner beauty” rather than comparing themselves to others. “When you wear that amount of make-up you’re just concealing yourself. Remove all those layers and you’ll see who you truly are,” she adds.
Miss World was first organized in 1951 in the UK. Some of the rules of entry for the competition have not been changed since then. Miss England hopefuls cannot be older than 27 in their year of entry, and are not allowed to be married or have given birth to children. In 2018, Veronika Didusenko, who had been crowned Miss Ukraine, said the rules needed to change after she had her title taken away for being a mother.
Altering entry rules is difficult but not impossible. Some netizens commented, “Some contestants, Ms. Raouf included, use their platform to do something good in the world.”

Students at Eindhoven University of Technology have been working on solar-powered cars for years. But last year, 30 students, known as Solar Team Eindhoven, took a year off to work on developing an off-road solar-powered car.
To bring a highly efficient(有效的)solar-powered car closer to reality, the team designed the entire car, from top to bottom. The car generated energy using the absorbed solar power from the solar panels(板)on top, which are 97% efficient. Most solar panels, by contrast, are only about 20% efficient, meaning a waste of about 80% of the sunlight they get. Weighing just 2,600 pounds, the car has a top speed of 90 miles per hour and can run for 440 miles on a sunny day. On the bottom, they designed a system to handle the heavy shaking that comes when driving over uneven surfaces.
The landscape of the Netherlands limits the testing options available to the team, so they took the car on its biggest test drive across Morocco, where the car had to weather through forests and dry riverbeds, across loose desert sand and up challenging mountain paths. The car succeeded in doing all of this and all without ever stopping at a charging station.
“It was an incredible trip with a positive ending. We’ re pushing the boundaries of technology,” says Wisse Bos, the team manager. The team take pride in their car, but they won’t be upset if car companies start to copy their ideas. In fact, they hope Stella Terra will inspire car companies to work on similar projects. But despite their success, the students think it’ll take 5 to 10 years before car companies are able to build a similar car.

While waiting for dinner, Marianne Dashwood wrote a letter very quickly. Elinoir Dashwood noticed a large “W” in the address. Marianne rang the bell to have someone post it immediately.
After dinner, there was a loud knock at the door. Marianne cried, “Oh, it’s Willoughby!” and seemed to throw herself into his arms when Colonel Brandon came in. She was so surprised that she immediately left the room.
Elinor made the tea for Colonel Brandon. He did not stay long.
The next morning, upon arriving at home after shopping, Marianne flew upstairs.
“No letter has been left here for me since we went out. How strange!” she said, in a low and disappointed voice.
About a week later, they saw Mr. Willoughby’s card on the table when they came in from morning’s drive. He had been there while the ladies were out.
“He will call again tomorrow,” said Elinor.
Marianne decided to stay behind the next morning, when the others went out. One look at her sister when they returned was enough to tell Elinor that Willoughby had not called.
Colonel Brandon came again to tea and had short private conversation with Elinor.
“Your sister’s engagement to Mr. Willoughby is very well known.”
“It cannot be well known,” returned Elinor, “for her own family does not know it.”
“I am sorry but I did not realize it was a secret. I came to ask,is everything decided? Is it possible to? Excuse me, Miss Dashwood. I believe I have been wrong in saying so much.”
From these words Elinor was sure of something, yet she knew he could never be successful with her.
Over the next three or four days, Willoughby neither came nor wrote.
One evening at a party, Marianne suddenly saw Willoughby standing in deep conversation with a young woman, whose name was Grey, a rich lady.
“He is there! Oh! Why does he not look at me? Why can’t I speak to him?”
“Marianne,” said Elinor, “perhaps he hasn’t seen you yet.”
At last he came to them.
“Willoughby, what’s wrong? Did you not get my letters? Won’t you look at me?”
After a moment’s pause, he spoke. “I came by last Tuesday but unfortunately did not see you. My card was not lost, I hope.”
“Have you not received my notes?” cried Marianne. “Tell me Willoughby; tell me, what’s the matter?”
Quiet and embarrassed, he said nothing more and turned quickly away to Miss Grey. Marianne, turning white and unable to stand, fell into her chair.

Roll over, sit and fetch aren’t commands normally given to a robot, but the smart toy company WowWee has developed a new way of owning a puppy.
CHIP (Canine Home Intelligent Pet) is a robotic dog with blue LED eyes and pointy ears and can sit, shake, dance and make all types of dog noises. It also has tracking capabilities to help locate its owner. “The beauty about CHIP is that it has its own thing going on,” said Sufer, CTO at WowWee. “It has its own life and own kind of intelligence. Even if you’re not around, it’s always doing something.”
CHIP uses wheels to get around and is loaded with sensors (传感器) that give it a 360-degree view to find its ball. The pup is Bluetooth enabled, which connects to a wristband worn by its owner. The wristband, similar to a watch, displays icons (图标) for different commands such as a thumb-up, which allows you to give your pup a digital belly rub. With its owner wearing a smart wristband, it can even follow him around the room.
“We worked on CHIP for about five to six months,” Davin Sufer, told dailymail. com, “We typically come up with a concept, model and product and get it on shelves within a year.” The company plans to start shipping units by next fall, which will allow them to load up the robotic dog with sensors and add many more animated responses per-owner interactivity.
The high-tech toy company made its debut (处女作) in 2004 by releasing the 1.5 foot RoboSapien, which sold millions of units. MiP, which hit shelves last year, is a seven-inch-tall robot covered in white with black accents. Users can direct it, change its emotions and make it dance to any song on your iPad. It’s loud, fast and active.
About 15 years ago, a company called ToyQuest developed the first ever electronic robotic dog — Tekno, the Robotic Puppy. The company sold over seven million units in the first season and 40 million more during its original four years of production. Tekno was built with over 160 emotions and instructions, but most importantly offered consumers a quick look into the future.

But the brain doesn’t store everything we want or need for future use. It makes choices and tends to remember information that forms a memorable pattern. Things you learned recently can be particularly difficult to remember because they haven’t taken root in your mind.
“Forgetting allows us to remember what is really important to our survival. We forget much of what we read, watch, and think directly every day.” writes John Medina in his book, Brain Rules.
How do you avoid losing 90%of what you’ve learned? An inspiring writer and speaker Zig Ziglar once said:“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.”
Repetition has been a remembering skill for ages. When you hear or read something once, you don’t really learn it-at least not well enough to store the new information for long. The right kind of repetition can do wonders for your memory. People learn or remember better by repeating things or getting exposed to information many times. Others repeat particular steps or processes deliberately a number of times or even years to become better at certain skills.
Daniel Coyle explains in his book, The Little Book of Talent:“...closing the book and writing a summary, even short ones, forces you to figure out the key points, process and organize those ideas so they make sense, and write them on the page. When you pick it back up weeks later, reread all of your notes or highlights to strengthen the ideas even further.”
People learn by repeating things. Better learning is a repetition process. Every time we repetitively access something we already know, we increase the memory’s stored value.
