Dear Editor,

I’m a Senior I student in a middle school. This term, my favorite teacher, Miss Mao, no longer teaches us. I want to see her, but I’m afraid that she no longer likes me and I don’t want to trouble her. I really miss her. What should I do?

Tian Yan

Dear Tian Yan,

It’s bad luck that you have lost your favorite teacher, But if she is still in your school, nothing can stop you going to see her. When she isn’t busy, ask her if she minds having a quick chat. You can then tell her she was your favorite teacher------ everyone is happy to know that they are liked!

If she has left the school, it will be more difficult to meet her. It will be hard, but remember people always come and go in their lives. We can’t rely on them to be with us all the time.

You may be sad to say goodbye to her, but we can remember and learn from her. Think of her best qualities.

You could also try looking for similar qualities in your other teachers. Study hard and give your new teacher a chance. In time, you might start to see that he or she has different qualities to learn from.

Finally, you can not completely rely on other people to get you through your studies, or even your life.

【推荐1】School was always something I loved because I always enjoyed learning more. I never felt afraid of going to school early in the morning, and I never tried to get out of any work. I stayed after school every chance I got. I did most of the work I could, got the best grades I could, and in the end, I graduated from high school with honors. All my success was because of the teachers I had who helped me, pushed me, and made learning a fun thing to do.

At the beginning of the school year, I had a lot of trouble leaving my mom in the mornings, but Mrs. Trainer always sat with me, talked with me, and helped me feel OK without my mom. She was understanding, kind, and always made the classroom a comfortable place. Mrs. Trainer also sat down and helped me learn; I was, and still am, the worst speller, but she tried her hardest to help me.

The second was my senior high school English teacher, Mr. Stonerock. Mr. Stonerock was able to make English and writing fun, especially when we had eight-page papers to hand in. Some of my favorite high school memories (记忆)were in his classes. Mr. Stonerock also taught my class APA format (格式)which to me is invaluable. I use it every day in my life. He put up with so many shenanigans (恶作剧)from my classmates and me and always did it with as mile.

My point to all of this is that there are amazing and caring teachers out there whether they teach college level classes, high school level classes, or primary level classes. I have had more influential teachers than I can count. I am still in touch with some of my high school teachers, who give me life advice and guide me. Teachers are invaluable resources (资源)and no one can take their place.

1. Which of the following can best describe the author as a student?
A.Creative and proud.B.Confident and polite.

2. How did Mrs. Trainer help the author?
A.By teaching him like a mother.
B.By helping him to be the best speller.
C.By asking him easy questions in class.
D.By learning about his habits from his mother.
3. What is the most useful skill the author learnt from Mr. Stonerock?
A.How to finish papers quickly.
B.How to use APA format correctly.
C.How to learn English in a fun way.
D.How to get on well with classmates.
4. What is the purpose of this text?
A.To show how to be a good teacher.
B.To stress teachers' key roles in schools.
C.To praise teachers important to the author.
D.To share the author' s experience as a teacher.

【推荐2】During my first year in college, I was silent. I was too afraid of saying something wrong.

I declared a religion major as a sophomore and took a class from Barbara, a young theologian. My mind was split open by a range of new thinkers and writers and by the quality of Barbara’s questions, I finally had something to say and the energy to say it. I was a frequent visitor during Barbara’s office hours, a rocket of words. She listened and calmly responded, a perfect contrast to my feverish ramblings. I loved what she saw in me, which was a range of abilities I had never seen in myself. In the following years, our relationship gradually deepened, but I was always conscious of a teacher-student dynamic.

This changed fundamentally when I became a parent. I had my son in March 2010, and Barbara was one of the first to congratulate me. When, nine months later, my child was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, a rare and always terminal illness with no treatment and no cure, she sent me a letter-handwritten on a white legal pad. For the next two and a half years, Barbara wrote me regular, sometimes weekly, letters, remarkable letters that are revealing, loving, and kind.

The letter written right before my son died, when he was three, was the most personal and perhaps the most profound. “I think he’s made you better by opening up the great fire of your love,” she wrote, “with his small but magnificent existence.” I have never in my life read a more deeply comforting sentence, one that spoke to my grandest hopes, my deepest fears, and the only faith that remains to me, which is a belief in chaos. Our love had bloomed and deepened from a guarded mutual respect to a richer, deeper friendship.

Mentors are meant to lead those in their charge into fresh understanding, help them sort and filter new experiences, assist in the project of making sense out of the chaos that is human life. Mentors observe and accompany the darkest despair, the wildest sorrow, and the most unexpected joy.

1. What can we learn from paragraph 2?

B.Their relationship changed significantly beyond a teacher-student mode.
C.The author was a frequent visitor to Barbara’s home after working hours.
D.Barbara’s peaceful exterior was a contrast to the author’s overexcited talk.
2. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The way Barbara treated her students.B.The fact that the author kept silent in class.
C.The role of the author as a college student.D.The relationship between Barbara and the author.
3. What transformed the relationship between Barbara and the author from a mutual respect to a deeper friendship?
A.Barbara’s efforts to solve the problem.
B.Barbara’s sympathy shown in the letter.
C.The author’s in-depth understanding of Barbara.
D.Barbara’s congratulations on the birth of the author’s son.
4. What does the author think of Barbara?
A.Demanding and dedicated.B.Responsible and reasonable.
C.Insightful and inspiring.D.Aggressive and ambitious.
