Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially stressful. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, .but privacy experts recommend going on with caution.

The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition. potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions.“It breaks down these social barriers we all have when meeting somebody,” says Bany Sandrew, who Created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 10000 people.

After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies(自拍) and sign in via social median At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically deletes users' data after an event.

Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.”

The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or“face blindness”, a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face, from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. 【推荐1】Open data-sharers are still in the minority in many fields. Although many researchers broadly agree that public access to raw data would accelerate science, because other scientists might be able to make advances not foreseen by the data's producers, most are reluctant to post the results of their own labours online (see Nature 461, 160-163; 2009). When Wolkovich, for instance, went hunting for the data from the 50 studies in her meta-analysis, only 8 data sets were available online, and many of the researchers whom she e-mailed refused to share their work. Forced to extract data from tables or figures in publications, Wolkovich's team could conduct only limited analyses

Some communities have agreed to share online - geneticists, for example, post DNA sequences at the GenBank repository, and astronomers are accustomed to accessing images of galaxies and stars from, say, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a telescope that has observed some 500 million objects - but these remain the exception, not the rule. Historically, scientists have objected to sharing for many reasons: it is a lot of work; until recently, good databases did not exist; grant funders were not pushing for sharing; it has been difficult to agree on standards for formatting data and the contextual information called metadata; and there is no agreed way to assign credit for data.

But the barriers are disappearing in part because journals and funding agencies worldwide are encouraging scientists to make their data public. Last year, the Royal Society in London said in its report Science as an Open Enterprise that scientists need to shift away from a research culture where data is viewed as private preserve. Funding agencies note that data paid for with public money should be public information, and the scientific community is recognizing that data can now be shared digitally in ways that were not possible before. To match the growing demand, services are springing up to make it easier to publish research products online and enable other researchers to discover and cite them.

Although exhortations to share data often concentrate on the moral advantages of sharing, the practice is not purely altruistic. Researchers who share get plenty of personal benefits, including more connections with colleagues, improved visibility and increased citations. The most successful sharers - those whose data are downloaded and cited the most often - get noticed, and their work gets used. For example, one of the most popular data sets on multidisciplinary repository Dryad is about wood density around the world; it has been downloaded 5,700 times. Co-author Amy Zanne, a biologist at George Washington University in Washington DC, thinks that users probably range from climate-change researchers wanting to estimate how much carbon is stored in biomass, to foresters looking for information on different grades of' timber. "I would much prefer to have my data used by the maximum number of people to ask their own questions," she says "It's important to allow readers and reviewers to see exactly how you arrive at your results. Publishing data and code allows your science to be reproducible ".

1. What do many researchers generally accept?
A.It is imperative to protest scientist' patents
B.Repositories are essential to scientific research
C.Open data sharing is most important to medical science
D.Open data sharing is conducive to scientific advancement
2. What is the attitude of most researchers towards making their own data public?
A.Opposed
B.Ambiguous
C.Liberal
D.Neutral
3. According to the passage, what might hinder open data sharing?
A.The fear of massive copying
B.The lack of a research culture
C.The belief that research is private intellectual property
D.The concern that certain agencies may make a profit out of it
4. Dryad serves as an example to show how open data sharing ___
A.is becoming increasingly popular
B.benefits sharers and users alike
C.makes researchers successful
D.saves both money and labor

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了云存储是一种灵活、方便、完全放心的数据存储方式。它有很多优点,但也有唯一缺点是你需要互联网来访问文件。

【推荐3】Cloud storage is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind.     1     This means you can store all your digital things remotely, without taking up space on your computer. There are two options available:public cloud storage allows you to share hosting space with other users; private cloud storage is the ideal choice for companies who want to have their data stored in their own environment.

2     Once you have registered and set up your account, you simply save your files via the internet using your username and password. This ensures your data remains secure and inaccessible to anyone else. Should you choose, you can put certain permissions in place, which makes it easy to share your data with your colleagues or your family.

When you sign up to cloud storage, you can choose the amount of space you need.     3     You can store anything digital: all your files, videos and pictures. Whether you want to use this storage solution to store your family photographs or you want to use it to store your work documentation, you will find it quite convenient.

Is it better than your computer or an external drive? The answer is a definite yes. Computers crash all the time. This is the most common cause of lost work and memories.     4     Here you also have the added risk of misplacing it or having it stolen. There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data from wherever, whenever, to not needing expensive external storage devices.     5

A.Cloud storage is very simple to use.
B.You will find cloud storage very cheap.
C.External hard drives can still break, or fail.
D.It enables you to store your data on hosted servers.
E.Cloud storage providers offer multiple layers of data security.
F.The only disadvantage, however, is that you need internet to access files.
