             Monday, January 21st

I'm a virus for the common cold. It has been a long time since I infected humans last time. Today I tried to infect a boy in a primary school all day.

His name is Sam. I waited on his desktop, and when he touched the desk I jumped on his finger. Unluckily, Sam didn't touch his eyes, mouth or nose. Then, right after class, he washed his hands. Now I'm full of soap and sitting in a sink!

Tuesday, January 22nd

This morning I jumped into the nose of Sam's best friend, Bill. Unluckily, the mucus in his nose caught me. I thought it was over for me, when suddenly Bill sneezed while he was talking to Sam.

I knew that would send me right into Sam's face! However, Sam quickly gave Bill a tissue, and Bill sneezed into that instead! Infecting people is harder than I imagined.

Wednesday, January 23rd

I'm feeling very unhappy today. Some scientists caught my friend Harry and put him under a microscope. Harry is a flu virus and he's a dangerous little guy. Besides, Sam ate all his vegetables today. He's exercising, and he's getting eight hours of sleep every night. His body is too strong for me!

Thursday, January 24th

I tried to infect Sam again today, but he washed his hands five times and never touched his face! He also gave tissues to every student in his class who was sneezing. It's impossible to give him a cold! So I have to give up and I'm moving to another school.

【推荐1】Food allergies have risen in the United States over the last few decades. Research suggests that 40 years ago the actual rate of food allergies was less than 1%. But this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data showing that almost 6% of U.S. adults and children have a food allergy.

When the body labels a food as harmful, the immune system treats that food like a threat. It sends chemical-signaling proteins, called cytokines, to fight the invader. These cytokines help regulate the body’s immune response and the accompanying inflammation (发炎).

“Someone can have a very mild reaction and just start to feel itchy, like they just had a bug bite. But it’s just this itchiness that came out of nowhere,” says Dr. Waheeda Samady, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “There are other people that will describe like a sense of doom.”

One emerging theory as to why some people get food allergies is that food particles (颗粒) first get into the body through a disrupted skin barrier, and the immune system in turn tags food proteins as an invader — something to be fought. Then, when that same food is eaten later, the body mounts an immune response.

One group with a disrupted skin barrier? Kids with eczema (湿疹). These children are at a much higher risk of developing a food allergy compared to other kids. And the earlier and more severely they get eczema, the higher the risk is for developing food allergies.

This year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added sesame to its list of major food allergens. The rest of the list includes: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, crab, lobster, shrimp, tree nuts, peanuts and soybeans.

If you think you have a food allergy, Waheeda recommends consulting a healthcare provider if you have access to one. A doctor can preform an allergy test or, in some cases, give a diagnosis based on symptoms alone. Getting professional advice can free you from avoiding foods to which you may not actually be allergic.

【推荐2】It’s no secret that inhaling(吸入) smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on research that found wildfire smoke is teeming with thousands of species of microorganisms. Some of these microorganisms, including bacteria and fungal spores(真菌孢子), are known to cause disease.

The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plant or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi(真菌) that otherwise might not easily become airborne(空气传播的). You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply post-fire. Scientists say the organisms attach themselves onto smoke particulates(微粒), allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents.

Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. “Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections,” says Chen, “but it’s certainly possible that a significant amount could worsen symptoms in someone with a pre-existing lung condition.” “I always thought it was the particulates in smoke that were causing these issues,” says Chen, “But when I read this, I started thinking: Could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illness?”

“Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infection or simply worsen potential respiratory(呼吸的) issues, the article raises a new health threat that is ‘certainly alarming’.” says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. “This is especially true for lower-income populations,” Jack says, “because people with fewer means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike, will inhale more smoke than those who drive.”

But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor—including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters(过滤器) and running air conditioning.

1. What can we know about the microorganisms from paragraph 2?
A.They could reproduce in large numbers after fires.
B.They could possibly travel through air by themselves.
C.They could be killed by high heat.
D.They can easily attach themselves to smoke particulates.
2. How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen?
A.They will causes lung infections.B.They might worsen lung disease.
C.They will destroy living environments.D.They might damage respiratory system.

【推荐3】Will there be an outbreak of bird flu that threatens human? Many experts disagree on when or whether a human pandemic (流行病) will occur, but do say there is a chance that the virus could mutate (变异), leading to widespread infection.     1    Here’s what you need to know to help keep yourself healthy.

Stock up on food, water and household supplies. If there is a bird flu pandemic, you’ll want to minimize your chance of catching it by staying indoors; you might even be required to stay home if the government asks that people remain in quarantine (隔离期). You’d better stock up today on at least two weeks’ essentials such as water, food, emergency and medical supplies.     2

Have an outbreak plan. It may feel odd or uncomfortable to talk to family members and loved ones about the worst case-a pandemic case. But when that case strikes, you’ll all be much better off if you have a plan decided on and ready.     3    Figure out how you would care for them and what your first response and responsibilities would be; this is an especially important conversation to have with those in need of special care.

4     Things like keeping a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough rest can help keep you healthy in an outbreak and also keep you from catching the common cold. Particularly in a flu outbreak situation, it will be important to wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be diligent about covering coughs and sneezes with tissues.

Moreover, know your essential health information such as blood type, allergies, and past or current medical conditions. Make a list of that essential information for all the members of your family.     5     And do make sure everyone in your household knows where to find it.

A.Pick up the good habits.
B.Work out regularly to stay slim.
C.It is wise to keep it somewhere safe and visible.
D.Talk with your friends and family about how you’d respond to an epidemic.
E.It’s important to ask yourself these questions before a pandemie occurs.
F.That will help you get through an extended time at home if there is an outbreak.
G.In that case, the best thing you can do right now is to prepare for that possibility.
