【推荐1】Of all the Christmas traditions in my family, the most firmly defended is what’s known as the healthy walk: a non-negotiable walk that takes place in the thin sliver of daylight separating the end of a massive breakfast and the beginning of an even bigger Christmas dinner.
I think the origins of the name lie with my late grandmother (who was also fond of healthy 5 a. m. swims in the English Channel well into her 70s), but it was my parents’ generation who first embraced it at Christmas, working out that a walk was essential. Now, as my parents themselves approach their 70s, my brothers and I have taken up the baton (接力棒) enthusiastically.
But hiking in the depths of winter isn’t without its risks. There are times when the healthy walk has felt almost a little too healthy — there’s a fine line between the kind of weather my grandmother would have described as pleasant and that which will lead to full-blown hypothermia(体温过低). Getting soaked, suffering frozen fingers and slithering (滑) down a muddy bank on your backside are all risks at Christmas in my family. So far, no-one has ever seriously injured themselves, but whatever Michael Bublé might say, the reality of festive-season walking in the UK is always more “sodden (湿透的) mud patch” than “winter wonderland”.
Of course, the risk of being caught out by the elements increases further on longer hikes at this time of year. I’m always amazed that more people don’t do themselves serious damage during ultra-distance winter events. I’m in a we of those (including my sister) who’ve managed to complete things such as the two-day Original Mountain Marathon which takes place in October. In the end, however, the same principle applies to these big events as to our more gentle Christmas Day walk: if you get the right gear (装备), you can handle pretty much anything.
1. What’s the most strictly guarded Christmas custom in the author’s family?A.A great breakfast. | B.The healthy walk. |
C.A big Christmas dinner. | D.5 a. m. swims in the English Channel. |
A.Kind and caring. | B.Successful and rich. |
C.Determined and energetic. | D.Ambitious and generous. |
A.They should wear proper gear to deal with many things. |
B.They can handle everything independently. |
C.They should focus on more gentle activities. |
D.They are risking their lives unnecessarily. |
A.Sports. | B.Education. | C.Entertainment. | D.Science. |

Participants were randomly assigned to one of three versions of a game that recorded how many steps they took each week. The first version placed them in direct competition with others. In the second version, they worked as a group to gain points. In the third, players earned points on their own but were asked to choose a friend or family member to be their supporter. This person received an e-mail each week reporting on the player's performance in order to help cheer her or him on.
On average, all three groups took more steps than usual. That said, certain versions of the game worked better for people with different personality traits. For instance, players who were more outgoing and more motivated to persevere with their goals tended to accumulate more steps in the competitive mode. In contrast, quiet players responded well to the game whether it was competitive, cooperative, or supportive. A third type, made up of those who were prone to take risks with their health and safety (by not wearing a seat belt, for example), was not helped by the game at all.
So though not all of us benefit, exercise gamification can work—and work especially well when you keep your personality in mind as you choose from among the many available apps.
1. What can we learn from paragraph 2?A.Each participant chose their version of a game. |
B.The second version got the participants to cooperate to earn points. |
C.Friends helped the player in the third version earn more points. |
D.The first version placed participants in indirect competition. |
A.Cooperative mode. | B.Competitive mode. |
C.Supportive mode. | D.No mode. |
A.were likely to | B.were unwilling to |
C.were afraid to | D.were hesitant to |
A.Challenge your body with different game versions. |
B.Change your personality to suit different game versions. |
C.Choose an exercise app with your personality in mind. |
D.Cooperate with your family to accumulate more steps. |
【推荐3】Walking is the best form of exercise. It is good for the upper respiratory (与呼吸有关的) system and the legs. It helps us control our weight and blood sugar. Walking is also a good way to help you make more friends, bringing chances to see new things and meet new people. Personally I try to walk at least 5 miles daily.
As well as walking, I also cycle around Xiamen. Cycling is great for weight loss and helps to build stamina (耐力). However, cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk. It is for this reason that I will strongly suggest that you try long-distance walking if you want to be physically healthy. I originally started walking around Xiamen because I didn’t have a car, but I soon started to enjoy the walking for its own sake.
I have also made many friends during my walks. It’s not uncommon for my 5-mile walk to sometimes take as long as 2 or 3 hours, because I stop to chat with different shop owners along my route. These days, if I skip my walk for even one day, the people in the shops may want to know why I didn’t come.
I’ll never forget the first time some people followed me when I was walking, and asked if it was okay for them to walk with me, I really didn’t know what to say, so I just replied that I didn’t mind. I have been invited for lunch, dinner and sometimes just to sit and drink tea with total strangers. There is nothing more pleasant than walking past a schoolyard and hearing all the kids say hello to me.
