People think that smartphones and laptops are evidence of progress. A certain amount of online searching, for instance, can be good for your brain, and there are apps that can promote brain functions. Yet technology advancements also come with some unintended consequences.
Studies have shown that blue-enriched light from electronic things like smartphones can disturb the body’s internal clock and make it impossible for you to stick to a proper sleep schedule. Losing sleep has negative effects on your brain, such as bad moods, decreased attention and problems of memory.
Technology makes it much easier to get distracted. For example, you step away from an important project to check your smartphone. Teens, in particular, are more distracted than ever. A recent survey of 2,400 teachers found that most educators feel students are more distracted than previous generations. Some 64 percent agreed with the idea that today’s digital technology does more to distract students than to help them academically.
And technology makes people much more forgetful than they used to be. The new generation are actually more likely to forget what day it is or where they put their keys than people over the age of 55, according to a Trending Machine survey. In a press about the survey, Jo Patricia, a doctor, said technology was to blame. “This is a generation that has grown up multitasking by using technology and is often accompanied by lack of sleep, which results in high levels of forgetfulness,” she said.
People who rely on GPS to get around have less activity in the hippo campus, an area of the brain involved in both memory and direction. A study from the University of London even found that taxi drivers had a more developed hippocampus (海马,大脑记忆核心部分) than non-taxi drivers — because they are so accustomed to using spatial (空间的) memory, rather than relying on GPS.
Now that you’re probably terrified of the effects of technology, let us remind you that you do have the power to prevent it. Just log off every once in a while!

These fights are often very loud and active. Each person involved shows an honest desire to pick up the bill, and in the end, all the people at the table give the winner praise and gratitude.
In fact, figuring out who will get the bill is always a headache for Chinese people at formal meals. Although the people hosting the meal are very likely to pay the check, it is a common practice to make a token (象征性的) effort to pay the bill, but you will embarrass them if you do end up actually chipping in (凑) some cash.
In recent years, going Dutch has been accepted by many young people. But older generations who fear “losing face” still find it embarrassing and mean to calculate each person’s share of the bill. As travel guide brand Lonely Planet noted, it is considered. “the height of unsophistication (不懂人情世故)”。
But these days, thanks to digital payment apps, splitting the bill electronically is becoming a widely-accepted idea. Even people from older generations would like to do so.
By scanning a QR code and paying their share via social networking tool WeChat and e-commerce app Alipay on their smart phones in one easy click, urban Chinese are finding it easier to save them the embarrassment of figuring out each person’s payment when they order a meal.
“This function has made going Dutch less trouble and more fun in China”, CNN noted.
“Because of their convenience, many of us are never without our phones. And person-to-person mobile payment services are incredibly easy to use and save the trouble of dealing with change,” said an 18-year-old student in China.
“You can also leave funny notes using emoji (表情符号) like a bowl of rice or a cup of tea to describe a meal that you have shared.”

Working far away from the office, I found it difficult to check records. Primero, especially the mobile app, makes it easier to manage cases. I can check my notes at any time. I can also immediately continue to handle new cases.”
In Indonesia, Primero was started in mid-2019 and has been in service in 32 out of 111 areas with child welfare (福利) services nationwide.
Astrid Gonzaga Dionisio, a UNICEF Indonesia Child Protection specialist, explains that it has been hugely useful in the COVID-19 response to have Primero in place. “Primero is not just a digital tool. It also helps governments think through their protection policies for vulnerable children. It provides UNICEF with a chance of supporting our government partners with the needed changes in protection measures for vulnerable children at the policy level.”
In Cambodia, despite the ongoing COVID-19, the Ministry of Social Affairs tried the app in April 2020. To connect government case workers with existing service providers, the technology acts as a bridge between them. Using the app which allows different systems to “talk” to each other, the Cambodia teams are able to build this bridge. This means that children now benefit from safe and secure information sharing between government and local non-governmental organizations, faster response times and more organizational responsibility. During COVID-19, when many front-line case workers are forced to do their professional duties remotely, Primero means better coordination (协作) and fewer children remaining uncovered.
“Primero allows us to build better protection systems in Cambodia. It lets us work across organizations, while managing all kinds of child protection cases,” says Suman Khadka, a UNICEF Cambodia Child Protection specialist.

One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 2-3 reach schools and 2-3 safety schools.
At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’ re qualified for it.
Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information.
Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to I j which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the program takes place in that state.
Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission program. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools.
For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high I school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest.

Researchers from Action on Salt analyzed a total of 302 meals on children’s menu from 50 largest restaurants in Britain. They found that 41 percent contained more than 1.8 grams of salt, the largest recommended amount for a child’s meal set by Public Health England (PHE) in 2017. More seriously, 34 percent of the meals had more than 2g of salt. They also found that levels of salt for the same meal could be largely different, depending on which restaurant made them. The spaghetti made by the Italian restaurant Prezzo contained 3.2g of salt, compared with 0.3g in the one made by Beefeater.
In September 2020, PHE set out new suggestions for the largest number of salt in children’s meals. It wants the level reduced to 1.71g by 2024. According to this, nearly half of the meals surveyed were over this level, including most meals at Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Pizza Hut, while Brewers Fayre, Burber King and Ikea made all their children’s dishes with less than 1.71g of salt.
Gramham Mac Gregor, Chairman of Action on Salt, said, “Gradually reducing the salt that is added to our food is the most effective measure for lowering blood pressure, so that we can reduce thousands of stroke (中风) and heart disease that are caused by overeating salt.”
“As for those restaurants who are unwilling to follow the instructions, ministers must now force them to stop adding all of this salt and putting our children’s future health at risk,” said Graham. “Parents should also pay attention to it,” he added. “Try to serve our children with more homemade meals and fewer restaurant foods. Try to add spices (香料) to food instead of salt. Try them. Our kids will thank us.”

Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, 70 people die. That is, more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes.
Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters.
"If you hear the thunder, you are in danger from lightning," said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross.
"Thunder means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any time, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until the storm has ended. The most important thing to remember is to seek shelter (遮蔽物), " Lopes said.
Summer is the peak time for lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips:
♦ Stop working, fishing, swimming or playing in open fields.
♦ Do not stand under a tree.
♦ Get off bicycle and motorcycles.
♦ Crouch down (蹲下) if there is no shelter.
♦ Avoid open spaces, wire fences, metal objects and electrical objects such as hair driers.

Scientists have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can affect sleep ---- they are television screens, computer screens or mobile phone screens. However, because mobiles and iPads are by nature portable ---- not to say addictive ---- more people are taking them into the bedroom. Users also tend to hold them much closer to their eyes than a computer or television screen.
Researchers are warning that looking at iPad displays for more than two hours leads to lower natural melatonin levels as the devices give off blue light. They say, “Turning off the devices at night is the final solution. But if you have to use these devices at night, dim the display to cut down irritation of the eyes and limit the time you spend on them before bed.”
They wrote in the journal Applied Ergonomics(应用人类工程学) that iPad makers should adjust the spectral power distribution(光谱功率分布) of the devices so that they affect the sleep patterns of users less.
It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be harmed by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that long-term harm to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity and even cancers.

The first simple 2D avatars appeared in role-playing computer games in the 1980s. Yet, very few people knew that future avatars would have such a wide variety of forms and uses. By the late 1990s, they had been used in web chats.
When people started creating their own avatars, they discovered that they were going to have the power to create new identities that did not look or act like their real selves at all. They could dress their avatars in fancy clothes, or they could try being someone of the opposite sex. When Internet users realized that their avatars would be seen by many people, not just their friends, they started having more than one avatar. Avatars let you express yourself and they give you lots of room for creativity.
Of course, the avatar you choose says a lot about your personality. If your blog avatar is a picture of a cute cat, your message is “like relaxing and having fun”. Well-known cartoon characters or laughing monkeys say “I’m a really funny person”. Most people create avatars that have similar features to their personalities and that look more or less like them and act like them. However, people obviously make their avatars look better than they do in real life.
Nowadays, avatars are everywhere and very useful. In most web chats, people choose an avatar from a selection of ready-made images or create their own images. You can also use avatars that move around and talk when you type in your message.
Despite the advantages of avatars, the use of avatars has also caused a few concerns. Some users worry that they are spending so much time in virtual worlds that they are becoming afraid of meeting people in the real world. The use of several avatars can also be a risk, as people can use avatars to cheat others online.
1. What can be inferred in paragraph 3?A.People’s new identities were very powerful. |

The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive (有效率的) than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee’s attention.”
“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university’s website.” Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day’s work, and as a result, increase productivity (生产效率),” he said.
According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos.” Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching video, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That’s not always a good idea.”
However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without.” he said.
