I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people, old and weak, can not get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.
Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.
I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids—they have perfectly good legs. Why can't they watch where they are going?” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you've got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

They may believe for example that British English is more correct than other varieties; or that written English is more correct than spoken English. Often this belief is supported by reference books to grammars, usage guides or dictionaries: If something goes against a rule in a grammar, or if the word isn’t in the dictionary, it “must be wrong”. Since the reference books are most often based on observation of the standard written language, the argument is really circular: These books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for; but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usage that are less often described.
A better way of looking at things is to say that usage is “correct in its place”. Standard American English is correct in America, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. So this means there is no answer to the question: “What kind of English should learners study?” It depends on their purposes. For many learners, the best model is one or other of the two main standard varieties: British or American English. Neither of these is “better” than the other, and they are both used and understood worldwide.
People are also worried by language change. If younger people “break” the rules that older people have learnt, older people often feel disturbed: they are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. This is a needless worry: change is natural and inevitable, it cannot be stopped, and it does not generally affect a languages efficiency as a communicative tool. A great deal of modern English grammar would have been wrong three hundred years ago, and will perhaps be wrong again three hundred years from now.

Just like a boxer, we too, come face to face with many competitors in the arena of life―problems and difficulties. The bad news is that we don't really know when they occur.
Here are several reasons why you should train yourself for success like a champion boxer!
You don't practice in the arena; that's where your skills and your abilities are evaluated. This also means that you don't practice solving problems and developing yourself when problems occur; you prepare yourself to face them long before you actually face them.
Talent is good but training is even better. Back in college, one of my classmates in Political Science didn't bring any textbook or notebook in our classes; he just listened and participated in discussions. What I didn't understand was how he became a top student! Obviously, he was gifted with a great memory and analytical skills. In short, he was talented.
If you are talented, you maybe need less preparation and training time in facing life's challenges. But even for people who are talented, training and learning are important. Avoid the lazy person's maxim: “If it isn't broken, why fix it?” Why wait for your roof to leak in the rainy season when you can fix it right away?
Training enables you to gain intuition and reflexes. Without training, you will mess up. Without training, you won't be able to anticipate how your enemy will hit you. You will lose control of your race car after the first lap. With training, you lower the possibility of these accidents.
Keep in mind that training is borne out of self-command and strong will. Even if you meet with some setbacks in your training, if you keep at it and persevere, you will soon see results in your life and when problems come, you will be like the champion boxer who stands tall and fights until the final round is over and you're proclaimed as the champion!
1. What does the text mainly tell us?A.To become a top boxer isn't easy. | B.We should train ourselves for success. |

B.To prove an average person doesn't need more training. |
C.To prove even talented people also need training. |

When Sam was young, he was always breaking bones. He never liked fireworks. A sudden loud bang would scare him so much that he could break some bones. Sam’s family had to learn how fragile he was. When he was a baby, it was very difficult for them.
No one knew much about what would happen to Sam. His friends grew taller, but he didn’t. Sam didn’t let how he looked worry him. “How we look on the outside,” he said, “is only a small part of who we are.”
Sam wanted to do everything that his friends did. Doctors put metal pins in his legs to make them stronger, but the pins didn’t help him walk. So Sam needed wheelchairs. Sam had wheelchairs to take him to different places. He had some wheelchairs for going over sand and others that would take him over muddy, rocky places.
Once, Sam’s wheelchair got stuck in some mud. There was no one around to help him, so he had to crawl home on his stomach.
Sam has been to many places in the world. He has been down rivers and in rainforests. If he couldn’t get somewhere in his chair, people would carry him.
One day, when Sam was in the mountains, his wheelchair broke. He knew a lot about chairs, but he couldn’t fix this one. Then, he had an idea. He would invent a new and different wheelchair. So Sam invented a chair that he can do everything in. Sam’s wheelchair, the EZi-Riser, can go as high as a bench and as low as the ground. It can move around in small places. Now, many people around the world are using his wheelchair.

I opened the built-in drawer to find Grandma’s old pieces of thread. I held her tomato-shaped pincushion(针垫)and thought of all the memories wrapped up in this machine. Grandma had become a tailoress(女裁缝) out of necessity. With four small children to clothes, he’d quickly learned how to sew almost everything they needed. For over 30 years, Grandma kept up with her sewing. She made matching Easter dresses for my sister and me and costumes for our school festivals. She was always in search of a new project, whether it was teaching our neighbors or sewing dresses for the homeless. But for the last several years of her life, dementia(痴呆) had left a shy and silent woman in place of the strong opinionated loving grandmother I’d known.
To honor Grandma’s memory, I wanted a project to help people the way she had. With the stay-at-home order in place because of Covid-19, I certainly had the time. So I dug out Grandma’s machine to sew masks, and read up on how to sew. I turned on my computer to research how to get the machine going again. After hours of digging through old black-and-white handbooks and sewing lessons online, I operated the machine on more time. I held my breath and pressed down on the pedal. Hurrah! It worked! In no time, my fingers were flying, steadily moving material under the very cooperative needle. When I sewed enough masks for my family, I kept going. I delivered nearly 500 masks to a hard-hit hospital in the area. Quite a big job for an old sewing machine.
A staff member met me outside to receive the donation. “Thank you,” she said, not knowing that any thanks for my efforts belonged to Grandma, who provided the inspiration.

I joined the crew of the Nina in Gulf Shores,Alabama,in February 2013.As part of a research project sponsored by my university,my goal was to document my days aboard the ship in a blog.I quickly realized that I gained the most valuable insights when I observed or gave tours to schoolage children. The fieldtrip tour of the Nina is handson learning at its best.In this setting, students could touch the line, pass around a ballast stone(压舱石),and move the extremely large tiller that controlled the direction of the ships in Columbus’ days. They soon came to understand the labor involved in sailing the ship back in his time.I was pleased to see the students become active participants in their learning process.
The Nina is not the only traveling museum that provides such field trips. A visit to Jamestown Settlement, for example, allows visitors to board three recreations of the ships that brought the first settlers from England to Virginia in the early 1600s. Historical guides, dressed in period costumes, give tours of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. These guides often portray a character that would have lived and worked during that time period.Students touring these ships are encouraged to interact with the guides in order to better understand the daily life in the past.
My experience on the Nina helps testify(证实) my longheld belief that students stay interested, ask better questions, and engage(参与)in higherorder thinking tasks when they are actively engaged in the learning process. To find the connections I was missing, I searched for opportunities that would involve teamwork as a volunteer on the Internet. A position matching graduate students with jobs drew my attention. It needed someone who would lead teams of graduate student volunteers to help bring in industry partners, and work with the university administration and student applicants. The chances to interact with all these different groups were appealing. I had no relevant experience and worried a disturbance to my study, but I still decided I might as well go for it and apply.
The first few weeks in my new role were challenging. Along with my routine study, I was suddenly managing a team of four volunteers and meetings with industry professionals. At first, I was nervous in meetings with them, feeling I wasn’t prepared enough. But as I gained experience, the interactions became truly enjoyable and rewarding. Sometimes the conversations went beyond regular business to touch on career paths, personal challenges, and more. I began to enjoy the daily mix of activities.
I also learned about leadership. At the start, things seemed to go well until one of my team members told me I wasn’t including her fully in decision-making. I was upset; didn’t she trust my leadership? But after I calmed down, I saw that maybe she had a point. So I began to ask team members to lead some of our meetings and encouraged them to express their views. This new approach allowed us to meet our targets while helping everyone feel more content and connected — as colleagues, but also as friends.
Beyond building relationships and skills, this experience expanded my horizons about my own professional future. Before I joined, I had only been exposed to academic career paths, and I assumed that was my future. Now I’ve realized I particularly enjoy feeling part of a team and affecting the lives of others. As I get closer to completing my Ph. D., I’m approaching job searches with a good idea of what I want.

I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team.
Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position who happened to be much better than me. I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time.
And at last my patience was rewarded. It was for me a very special day. Our team had shot up into the final and was meeting its rival(竞争对手). Our starplayer sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field. Imagine the astonishment in the college camp! The thought was that the game was as good as lost, and so also, I confess, did I for this player was our trump card(王牌): That is what everybody always said. However, something had to be done, and that something had to be myself! The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and—there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess.
I can tell you that I played like a demon(魔鬼). I was here, there and everywhere—now leading the attack, now falling back to help the defense. It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and “the observed of all observers”. And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction.

As a single parent, my paycheck was survival. I did everything I could to give my daughter Kristil a good life, but there were some things my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we did Spring Festival shopping, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the prices.
Monday morning, I set off on my moneymaking pursuits. First, I headed to the pawnshop (当铺) to sell a ring that my mother had given me a decade earlier. Next was the antiques store. I sold six Precious Moments statues for $150.
On day back home, I felt as if the world was closing in on me. Then the doorbell rang. It was my old professor, Esther Heffernan. “I tried to call but couldn’t get through. Then I called your job and they said you weren’t working there anymore, so I thought I would come by, ” She said. “I have gifts for you and Kristil.” Then she kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she left.
I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch two months ago. I’d first met Esther 10 years earlier, when I was her student at College. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Esther was always understanding and would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil.
When I opened her card, I gasped in shock. Hundred-dollar bills inside. Tears of gratitude welled up in my eyes. Esther had given me $1,000.
It has been 14 years since that day, but I’ve never forgotten what Esther did for us. In 2020, at age 91, Esther died, but the love she gave during her life lives on in the hearts of many. I am lucky to be one of them.
