I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people, old and weak, can not get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.

Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.

I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.

Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids—they have perfectly good legs. Why can't they watch where they are going?” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.

“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you've got legs, and I have wheels.”

People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

A.The Wheelchairs Are as Good as Two LegsB.People with Two Legs Are Truly Healthy

【推荐1】Many people believe that there is one form of their language that is more correct than others. They may believe for example that British English is more correct than other varieties; or that written English is more correct than spoken English. Often this belief is supported by reference books to grammars, usage guides or dictionaries: If something goes against a rule in a grammar, or if the word isn’t in the dictionary, it “must be wrong”. Since the reference books are most often based on observation of the standard written language, the argument is really circular: These books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for; but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usage that are less often described.

A better way of looking at things is to say that usage is “correct in its place”. Standard American English is correct in America, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. So this means there is no answer to the question: “What kind of English should learners study?” It depends on their purposes. For many learners, the best model is one or other of the two main standard varieties: British or American English. Neither of these is “better” than the other, and they are both used and understood worldwide.

People are also worried by language change. If younger people “break” the rules that older people have learnt, older people often feel disturbed: they are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. This is a needless worry: change is natural and inevitable, it cannot be stopped, and it does not generally affect a languages efficiency as a communicative tool. A great deal of modern English grammar would have been wrong three hundred years ago, and will perhaps be wrong again three hundred years from now.

1. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A.Learners are always confused by the reference books.
B.Some wrong usages can be found in the reference books.
C.Nobody can challenge the authority of the reference books.
D.Usages not mentioned in the reference books are not necessarily wrong.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.There is no “standard English”.
B.American English is better than British English.
C.A learner should master all the distinctions of different English.
D.The differences between British English and American English.
3. Which word can replace the underlined word “inevitable” in paragraph 3?
A.Avoidable.B.Formal.C.Certain.D.Temporary.
4. What is the authors attitude towards the changes of English?
A.Disturbed.B.Optimistic.C.Cautious.D.Doubtful.

【推荐2】You may have come across the picture that has a number drawn on the floor with two people standing on either side of the number. One person sees a 6, and the other sees a 9.    1

They could either stay there arguing and holding on to their ideas, or they could move around and see the difference in their thoughts. This is perspective (视角).

2    The world would be a better place if people understood this. But before you start thinking of how you can start seeing things from the perspective of another person, you need to first know what a life perspective is.

Just like the example, life perspective is the way we see life, including the way we approach life and all that are in our personal experience.     3     What we usually have are two different perspectives on one thing. We have a person saying something is bad and should not be done, and then we have another person saying that “bad” is a strong word to use for the same thing.

4    And everyone sees things a lot differently compared to the next person. This makes life more complex because, instead of seeing the similarities we share, we often focus on what is different, which leads to disagreements and fights.    5    It's likely that these problems no longer annoy you.

A.There are more than 7 billion people in the world.
B.In our life, few things are absolutely right or wrong.
C.It seems difficult to decide which perspective is wrong.
D.Simply make a switch and see from a different perspective.
E.A perspective on life can be shaped, changed, or explained.
F.They are both right, yet they are wrong in the eyes of the other person.
G.And they usually make us believe that we are the one who s holding the truth.

【推荐3】Ever seen a great champion boxer like Manny Pacquiao? With his speed and power, he has conquered lots of other great boxers of the 21st century. In between fights, he keeps his training and strengthens it when another fight approaches.

Just like a boxer, we too, come face to face with many competitors in the arena of life―problems and difficulties. The bad news is that we don't really know when they occur.

Here are several reasons why you should train yourself for success like a champion boxer!

You don't practice in the arena; that's where your skills and your abilities are evaluated. This also means that you don't practice solving problems and developing yourself when problems occur; you prepare yourself to face them long before you actually face them.

Talent is good but training is even better. Back in college, one of my classmates in Political Science didn't bring any textbook or notebook in our classes; he just listened and participated in discussions. What I didn't understand was how he became a top student! Obviously, he was gifted with a great memory and analytical skills. In short, he was talented.

If you are talented, you maybe need less preparation and training time in facing life's challenges. But even for people who are talented, training and learning are important. Avoid the lazy person's maxim: “If it isn't broken, why fix it?” Why wait for your roof to leak in the rainy season when you can fix it right away?

Training enables you to gain intuition and reflexes. Without training, you will mess up. Without training, you won't be able to anticipate how your enemy will hit you. You will lose control of your race car after the first lap. With training, you lower the possibility of these accidents.

Keep in mind that training is borne out of self-command and strong will. Even if you meet with some setbacks in your training, if you keep at it and persevere, you will soon see results in your life and when problems come, you will be like the champion boxer who stands tall and fights until the final round is over and you're proclaimed as the champion!

1. What does the text mainly tell us?
A.To become a top boxer isn't easy.B.We should train ourselves for success.
C.Life is full of problems and difficulties.D.Talent is more important than training for success.
2. Why does the author mention his classmate?
A.To introduce his classmates learning methods.
B.To prove an average person doesn't need more training.
C.To prove even talented people also need training.
D.To show respect for his classmate.
3. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “anticipate” in Paragraph 7?
A.predictB.avoidC.understandD.defeat
4. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Victory depends on the positive attitude to training.
B.Ifs normal to meet with some difficulties in training.
C.Boxers often win the victory by persevering.
D.Perseverance in training is very important.
