It was our first evening dog-sitting while our teenage daughter Rochelle was on vacation for two weeks. Louie searched the entire house for his “mommy”. Then, that disappointed but determined puppy (小狗) developed a plan.

While my husband Paul and I were watching TV, we heard loud noises. Something heavy was being dragged down the stairs. I looked around and saw this six-month-old puppy laboriously dragging his large, hard-sided carrier down the stairs. The next moment saw him drag his possessions one by one, first his blanket, and then his bowl, bone, ball and sweater. The project took most of the evening but Louie showed no sign of tiredness at all.

After packing all the items into the carrier, he attempted to jump inside. Once inside, he got the zipper between his teeth and, with all the strength, he pulled the zipper closed. Then he lay down and went to sleep in it throughout the night. The message was abundantly clear. He wanted to go see his “mommy”. He had seen her pack her suitcase and go away for her vacation. He must do the same so he could find her. When I unzipped his carrier in the morning, Louie was excited, but his “mommy” was nowhere to be seen.

The puppy surprised us with new undertakings every day. His absolutely favorite activity was going for a car ride. The possibility of stopping at McDonald's was his consideration. But one day, my husband didn't stop at McDonald's. He left Louie in the car with the window slightly open while he went to a drugstore. Louie managed to jump out of the window. He walked two blocks and found Paul, walking around him as if saying, “Can we go to have fried chicken now?”

Louie is an old gray-haired dog now, but he is still up to his old, and new, tricks.

【推荐1】Female seals don’t change their spots, according to a new study by University of Alberta biologists. In fact, individual differences in boldness remain consistent over time. The study is among the first to examine boldness in wild marine mammals in the field of animal personality. Animal personality influences many ecological processes, like how individuals interact with other species or respond to changing environmental conditions.

Researchers studied female seals on Sable Island, home to the world’s largest grey seal colony. Over a period from 2008 to 2016, biologist Christi Bubac and a field team led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada measured boldness responses in the female seals when defending their young.

“During the breeding season, we saw that females tend to behave consistently, not only between years, but also within the lactation period of a given year,” explained Bubac, lead author and PhD student in the Department of Biological Sciences studying with wildlife geneticist David Colman. “This provides an example of animal personality, with consistent individual differences observed over time.”

Bubac also examined how reproductive success is related to a seal’s boldness or shyness. Rey seals nurse for 16 to 18 days, so mother seals have a very short window to get baby seals as fat as they can. During this time, baby seals triple in body mass. Body mass is a good predictor of reproductive success because it indicates the puppies’ chances of survival. “On average, we found that bolder females stop feeding those that are two kilograms heavier, compared with the shyest females, improving their chances of surviving the first year of life,” said Bubac.

These results present some very interesting biological questions, explained Coltman, professor of biology. “This research shows that young grey seal moms that are bold tend to stop feeding larger puppies compared with shy moms. However, older grey seals also tend to be bolder. If bolder animals have bigger pups and live longer, why does variation in boldness remain? Why be shy?”

1. What is the purpose of the study of seals?
A.To test their effects on ecological processes.
B.To study how seals interact with each other.
C.To check how the environment affects mammals.
D.To examine marine mammals’ personality difference.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Animals have remained their personality since they were born.
B.Female seals behave more boldly in the lactation period.
C.Seals’ boldness responses remain the same over time.
D.The study on seals’ personality has been very mature.
3. Which of the following may Christi Bubac agree with?
A.Bolder female seals adjust the nursing time to their babies’ weight.
B.Mother seals tend to get babies as slim as possible.
C.It usually takes mother seals 20 days to nurse.
D.Bolder female seals feed less than shy ones.
4. Where are we most likely to read the text?
A.In a travel guide.B.In a textbook.C.In a magazine.D.In an art gallery.

【推荐2】The Amazing Penguin Rescue

In the summer of 2016, the ship MV Treasure sunk, creating an oil spill. Thirteen hundred tons of fuel oil were flowing right in the middle of the African Penguins’ habitat. Soon the oil covered about 20,000 penguins. Without swift help, the seabirds would have no chance of survival. Volunteers were showing up by the thousands and I also took part in what was the largest animal rescue operation ever.

A warehouse was turned into a rescue center near the habitat and hundreds of pools were built to hold about 100 oiled birds each. When walking into the center, I couldn’t believe my ears. I had expected to walk into a chorus of honking and squawking(尖声叫). Instead, the center sounded like a library. The penguins were dead silent. My heart ached for the painful birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt. Cleaning oil off a penguin wasn’t easy. Even with more than 12,500 volunteers, it took a month to bathe all 20,000 birds at the center.

While volunteers were busy bathing the oiled penguins, another crisis(危机) was developing. Oil from the spill had started moving north. Tens of thousands of penguins were in the oil’s path. But we already had our hands full with 20,000 recovering birds. If any more birds were oiled, we wouldn’t have enough resources to save them.

One researcher came up with an idea: What if the penguins were temporarily moved out of harm’s way? Experts decided to have a try. Volunteers rounded up the penguins and released them 500 miles away. The hope was that by the time the seabirds swam home, the oil would be gone. The plan worked! Another 20,000 penguins were saved.

The entire penguin rescue took about three months. More than 90% of the oiled penguins were successfully returned to the wild. Looking back on the rescue, I am still amazed by the work of the volunteers. What I could hardly believe was that we accomplished an impossible task.

【推荐3】Could your next pet be a goat? New research suggests that these farm animals try to communicate with people in the same way that dogs and horses do. In a series of experiments, researchers found that when the animals had a problem that they couldn’t solve alone, the goats would gaze at a person for help. The research also shows that goats will change their actions according to a person’s behavior.

Goats were the first domesticated(驯化为)livestock species, about 10,000 years ago, according to Alan McElligott. “From our earlier research, we already know that goats are smarter than people think, but these results show how they can communicate and interact with people even though they were not domesticated as pets or working animals,” McElligott said in a statement.

To test the goats’ communication skills, the researchers trained the animals to remove the lid from a box to receive a reward. The reward was then made inaccessible(得不到的,不能接近的), and the goats’ reactions toward the experimenters—who were either facing the goats or had turned away—were recorded. The researchers found that the goats would gaze at the forward-facing person more often, and for longer periods of time. Sometimes, the goats would also approach the forward-facing person before returning to the box.

“Goats gaze at humans in the same way as dogs when asking for a treat that is out of reach,” study researcher Christian Nawroth said in the same statement. “Our results provide strong evidence for communication directed at humans in a species that was domesticated mainly for agricultural product, and goats show similarities with animals bred to become pets or working animals, such as dogs and horses.”

The authors said that they hope the study will help people to better understand domesticated animals like goats, dogs and horses, and how they interact with humans.

C.the goatsD.the dogs
2. What did the goats do after they couldn’t receive the reward?
A.They refused to remove the lid.
B.They stared at the experimenters.
C.They turned away.

3. What is the aim of the research?
A.To study the habits of animals in order to understand their feelings.
B.To raise more domesticated animals like goats, dogs and horses.
C.To show the similarity between goats and dogs.
D.To make people better understand domesticated animals.
