I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994 but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday: “Kerrel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him. ”
AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together any more, and my dad lived alone. For a while he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him. We couldn’t afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no school supplies and often couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost. The teacher’s words muffled (低沉) as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.
I did not share my burden with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.
I had known that he was going to die. But after so many years of keeping his condition a secret, I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days.

Christine closed the door to Anna’s room. Inside, her classmate and friend had fallen asleep. Downstairs, Christine’s mom, Donna, was grasping Anna’s mother Sheila around the shoulders. “We should go,” she said. “Get some rest, huh?” Sheila nodded, blew her nose, and then waved them goodbye.
On the car riding home, Christine worked up the courage to ask the question on her mind, “Mom? Why was Sheila weeping?” She thought she knew the answer, of course: Anna’s cancer. In the past, Anna had been the neighborhood do-gooder, always going door to door for various causes: the local animal shelter, suffering children in Africa, or the families who’d lost their homes to fire. Now Anna could barely feed or dress herself. Christine thought it so unfair when bad things like this happened to good people.
“Well, it’s complex, but I guess you’re old enough to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“Understand that Anna is sick, yes, but Anna actually gets a lot of help. The government helps pay for a lot of her medicine. She gets meals delivered to her by a nonprofit. She even gets massages from local volunteers.”
“Wow!”
“Her life’s still very hard, of course, and no one would trade places with her, but when you have cancer, everyone can see that you need help,” continued Donna. “They don’t always see that the people around you are suffering.”
“People like Sheila?”
“Yes, did you know that Sheila took a break from her job to stay home with Anna?”
“No!” Christine was surprised. She had never thought about who took Anna to her appointments, or fed her when she was too weak to lift a spoon. Of course it was her family.
“Yes. So that means that many of the things they used to do with that extra money are all out the window now. They’re even worried now about keeping the house.”
“Their house? So Anna might have to move, while she’s sick?”
“If she doesn’t get better soon, and the bills keep piling up...” Donna pulled into the driveway, and just in time. Her cheeks were shining with tears.

My dad was the gentlest, most loving and caring dad in the world-until we had an argument. During those moments, my words surely never reached his "open mind" because his ears were closed. There was no point trying to argue with my dad. He always had the last word. I could never win.
At one time, when my father refused to understand that I needed the privacy of a phone in my room, my frustration turned to tears. He ended our "discussion", leaving me silently defeated and miserable. With the hope that his eyes would be more open than his ears, I began to write a note that began with "Dear Daddy". In a most touching tone, I told him how much I respected his opinion, and how much I hated to talk back to him. 1 stressed that I cherished our relationship and, above all, I loved him deeply. It was only minutes before I heard a knock at my door. When I saw the look on my father's face, I knew that my note had melted his temper and touched his heart. The victory of winning my dad's permission was sweet.
This morning I woke up at a text message from one of my best friends, which said "Who's excited for a snow day?" My initial reaction was why on earth we would have a snow day. It was not supposed to snow last night. My second reaction was that that was not true. So I called my dad to make sure whether what I heard was correct. Sure enough it was. After finding this news out, I fell back asleep almost immediately. My dad had said to call him when I woke up. About two hours passed, and I woke up, calling him as planned. No answer. I figured he was just out for business, so I left a message. I called him multiple times on his work, house, and cell phones. Still, no answer. Around noon I got worried. He should have answered something by now. Thinking of his suffering a stomach flu two weeks ago, I decided I would go to make sure he was okay.

We’ve probably all been there-a friend swears by her new diet, but when you give it a try, you don’t see the same results. What gives?
According to a new study conducted by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, individual people can have extremely different responses to the same foods, and universal diets and dietary recommendations might not be as helpful as previously thought.
Eight hundred non-diabetic(糖尿病的) people participated in the week-long study, during which they received standardized meals for breakfast. The participants used a mobile app to report their lifestyle habits and food intake, and additional data was collected through health questionnaires, blood tests and body measurements.
Although the glycemic(血糖的) index ranks foods based on how they affect the blood sugar levels of groups of people, the researchers saw that how the food was metabolized varied greatly from person to person—and that the glycemic index depends largely on the individual. The age and body-mass index(BMI) of the participants were found to be strongly linked with differences in metabolism, as were gut microbes.
The individualized feedback was particularly compelling, and provided support for the importance of personalized nutrition plans. One woman’s blood sugar spiked when she ate tomatoes-a food that any universal diet would have advertised as a healthy choice. “For this person, an individually tailored diet would not have included tomatoes but may have included other ingredients that many of us would not consider healthy, but are in fact healthy for her,” Eran Elinav, one of the researchers, said in a statement.
Because the increase of blood glucose levels can lead to pre-diabetes and has been linked to obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and heart disease, these results are crucial to understanding how to best help people identify which foods are best for their health.
“After seeing this data, I think about the possibility that maybe we’re wrong in our thinking about the obesity and diabetes epidemic,” said Eran Segal, the other lead researcher.

My parents would not let me go to school that morning. “Why not?” I argued. “I have exams. I have work in Spanish class that I can’t miss!” My mother gave me a sad look. “You have to get a checkup (身体检查),” she explained. I screamed, “NO!” My father pulled me over to the couch. “Alison,” my father said in a tone that was quiet but powerful. “You’re in the state of malnutrition (营养不良). And you know that. You can have all in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.” For some reason, I believed him. I hadn’t wanted it to be this way.
I was a girl who didn’t like doing sports but was fond of snack food. I weighed 50kg at my age of 14. Most of the time, I avoided parties with my friends, afraid of how ugly they would think I looked. One day, I found a slim girl on TV was so attractive that I wanted to look like her. I forced myself to do exercise and started going on a diet for a good-looking body shape. During the summer, I did weekly weigh-ins (称重) and kept a strict diet. I memorized the calories of almost everything that I may eat. My only goal was to lose weight. Later, when it became too cold to run outside, I restricted my calories even more to make up for not being able to burn them.
Gradually I lost my weight a lot. But things turned out to be worse. My hands were especially dry, peeling and wrinkled. My sister called them old people’s hands. Once, I went shopping with my mom. While we waited in line to pay for our items, I felt I was going to faint (昏厥). I felt dizzy and standing was getting harder and harder.

What is a plant-based diet? Is it just a fashionable new term for a “vegan(严格素食主义者)”? While there is no set definition, a plant-based way of eating focuses on consuming plant-sourced wholefoods (全天然食物) that are least processed in their original form, for example whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These are full of vitamins, minerals, and provide an abundance of nutrients for your body. Following a plant-based lifestyle doesn’t necessarily mean fully avoiding animal products like a vegan. For plant-based eaters, animal proteins can happily fit in with the lifestyle, yet they play more of a supporting role. Overall, “plant-based” is more of a broad and flexible way of thinking about nutrition rather than a rigid diet. With a plant-based diet, the focus is on simple, nutritious wholefoods.
Why people start following a plant-based diet? One of the main reasons is the health benefits. Now, more so than ever, research is showing how eating more plants and less meat can positively affect health. Particularly, a plant-based lifestyle has been linked to heart health. In a study of more than 10, 000 adults published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, it was shown that those who followed a more plant-based diet had a 16 percent lower risk of having cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and a 32 percent lower risk of dying of cardiovascular disease.
A plant-based lifestyle can also help to promote weight loss and help to maintain your goal weight. Weight loss commonly occurs because the diet consists of foods that are full of fiber and have a high-water content, which easily make you feel full up.
Another major reason to jump at the plant-based eating train is the external (外界的,外部的)benefits. Plant-based foods are loaded with vitamins, which help brighten your skin. One of the plant-based all-star vitamins is vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant. A large number of fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C. They assist in smoothing lines, and reducing wrinkles.
