Working at a desk all day may not be as bad for your health as sitting in front of a television after work. That is a finding of a new study done in the United States. It also suggests that not all forms of sitting are equally bad.

Jeanette Garcia led the study. Garcia works as a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. "We've been hearing more and more about how sitting is the new smoking," she said. She added that other evidence suggests a relationship between health problems and time spent sitting. "However, it's been unclear whether all sitting is created equal, suggesting that as long as you reduce any type of sitting, then that's helpful in improving health," she added. "This study suggests that this may not be the case, and that we should focus more on leisure(休闲)time siting, mainly television viewing time, rather than sitting, in general.”

The study followed close to 3,600 African-American adults. Almost one-third of them watched television, or TV, for more than four hours a day. A little more than one-third of the subjects spent between two and four hours a day sitting in front of the TV. The remaining third watched TV for less than two hours a day. Researchers followed the group for an average of 8.4 years. During the study, 205 of the subjects died and 129 others suffered a heart attack or stroke.

Compared to people who watched less than two hours of television daily, those who spent more than four hours in front of the TV were 49 percent more likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke. But the undesirable health effects of TV appeared to be limited to adults who failed to get the recommended amount of weekly exercise. That is around 150 minutes of moderate(普通的)physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week.

Lin Yang is a researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada. She says it is possible that sitting in front of the TV might be worse than sitting at a desk because people snack while they are watching TV. Yang explained that “the evidence on TV viewing and health risks is strong," even if the exact biological causes are unclear.

【推荐1】Daily life has its satisfactions, such as the perfect reply to a friend’s text message, the first after-work drink, or the unexpected gift.     1     That moment when the mess of 21st-century existence disappears into the non-judgmental embrace of a soft bed.

Somehow we have pushed this pleasure to the back of the queue. A third of American adults report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours. Many of us feel under-rested. For some, the problem is modern life: emails, to-do lists and screens.     2

Now there’s increasing evidence that a lack of sleep is associated with higher risk of depression, cancer, and other problems. Research published in the European Heart Journal reports that heart disease was lower among people who went to sleep between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., no matter how long they slept.     3

But after the appearance and rise of sleeping aids, is sleep the next part of human experience that will become increasingly tracked, counted and compared? We sigh at LinkedIn users who claim to wake up at Sam and learn Mandarin while meditating. But when people overcommit to sleeping well, it can be counter-productive.

4     In his book Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems, Oxford professor Colin Espie writes about ‘orthosomnia’, where people are so focused with sleeping well that they become too anxious to do so. The marketing of sleeping aids adds to this.

Espie says we each have a sleep pattern that we figure out through trial and error. Genetically, some humans are larks and some are owls; the larks may just have better cardiovascular health. For an owl to try to fight their natural schedule, and sleep earlier, wouldn’t necessarily help.

Basic sleeping advice is notably consistent, including keeping a regular pattern, cutting back on alcohol and caffeine and taking away all bedroom distractions. Instead of just loading sleep advice on individuals, we could integrate aspects of it into public health.     5     Employers could be sensitive to the different needs of their workers.

A good night’s sleep is a profound pleasure. As far as possible, it should also remain a simple one.

A.Such research is all well and good.
B.The risk is that we ignore the problem.
C.Then there are those who can’t sleep when they try.
D.For other people, it’s the demands of work or family.
E.But does any of these really compare to the joy of going to sleep?
F.Schools could start later to coincide with children’s body rhythms.
G.Stressing ourselves out about a lack of sleep can worsen the problem.

【推荐2】Even if the world makes it hard to relax, we all need to find a way to reset and recharge. We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep―but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. Saudra Dalton-Smith, a physician, outlines different types of rest that are essential for human growing.

Physical rest

This is the usual definition of rest were a familiar with. But while we know we need to spend a decent number of hours in bed to stay healthy, a steady persistent support of studies shows a large proportion of us still don’t get enough physical rest.

Mental rest

Always have a tornado of thoughts spinning in your head from the moment you wake up to the moment you finally fall asleep? You need more mental rest, and even if you sleep a solid eight hours a night, you’re not going to feel fully recharged until you get it.

“The good news is you don’t have to quit your job or go on vacation to fix this. Schedule short breaks to occur every two hours throughout your workday these breaks can remind you to slow down. You might also keep a notepad by the bed to write down any painful thoughts that would keep you awake,” suggests Dalton-smith.

Sensory rest

Staring at screens all day and all night means your eyes never get a proper rest, but this isn’t the only reason many of us never give our senses a break. Noisy cites, sharp sound announcements and loud music all contribute to constant sensory stimulation. Your brain needs a rest now and again. Consciously close your eyes and give yourself the gift of silence for short periods throughout the day.

Emotional rest

This “means having the time and space to freely express your feelings and cut back on people-pleasing,” Dalton-smith explains. “Emotional rest also requires the courage to be genuine. An emotionally rested person can answer the question, ‘How are you today?’ with a truthful ‘I’m not okay’, and then go on to share some hard things that otherwise go unsaid.”

In other words, we all need the space to stop pretending for ourselves and others and get real about our feelings.

1. Which of the following statement is true about the types of rest mentioned in the passage?
A.Physical rest means lying in bed for a proper period and exercising.
B.Mental rest indicates resting every two hours when you’re working.
C.Sensory rest means keeping silent frequently and staring at screens.
D.Emotional rest means pretending to share private affairs with others.
2. What type of rest do you need most if you’re working with a computer in an office?
A.Physical restB.Mental restC.Sensory restD.Emotional rest
3. It can be concluded that if a person feels tired, he should_________.
A.try to identify just what sort of rest he’s lacking exactly
B.spend some time with those who can energize him
C.have the four types of rest mentioned in the passage in order
D.have a need to feel connected to something larger than himself
