When the dog Abby disappeared in Dothan, Alabama, all she left behind was her collar(项圈)and an empty tie-out line. June Rountree and her husband searched the neighborhood door to door for their missing 4-year-old black-and-white fur baby to no avail. Three weeks passed and there was no sign of Abby, then something unexpected happened.

June was working on the weekend at the Walmart register when she heard a lot of noise. Somehow, a dog had gotten loose in the store and was cleverly dodging(避开)the would-be shoppers and staff as she rushed through various departments.

“I was like,‘What in the world is happening?’” customer service associate Danielle Robinette said. When the dog arrived at June’s post, register No. 6, it was clear that she wasn’t checking out,but she was checking in. June could hardly believe it. The dashing dog was her long-absent Abby. “I called her name and she came to me,” Rountree said. “I bent over and hugged her. I completely lost it then. I couldn’t speak. I was in complete shock and just couldn’t believe it. ”

No one is sure where Abby was for the three weeks, but for a dog that had been on its own three weeks she was in pretty good shape. The Rountrees believe someone must have been feeding her even if they were unable to catch her, and they’re truly grateful for that.

Someone guesses that since June had been with Abby in the Walmart parking lot a few times, the dog might have recognized the location when she happened upon it in her travels. While we’re not sure where Walmart generally stocks(存货)happy reunions, we think it’s safe to say when Abby left the store to go home with her mom, she was one satisfied customer.

【推荐1】You’ve probably heard of rain forests, but do you know what a cloud forest is? Cloud forests are evergreen forests that are often covered in clouds or mist and are located on mountains. Cool temperatures on mountain slopes create clouds that cover the trees. There are cloud forests on most continents. Central and South America have them, as do Asia and Africa. You can also find cloud forests in Hawaii and on Caribbean islands.

Cloud forests have different names, depending on where they are found. Cloud forests are also known as fog forests or mossy forests. In Peru and Bolivia, cloud forests are part of a larger ecosystem called yungas, which means “warm lands.”

Many scientists consider cloud forests to be a special type of rainforest. Cloud forests are not as warm tropical rain forests because they are found at higher elevations (海拔) that have colder air. But these cloud forests and tropical rain forests both have many different plants and animals living within their ecosystems.

Like tropical rain forests, cloud forest trees drip (滴下) with moisture, but it does not often rain in a cloud forest. Instead, the fog collects as dew on leaves, vines, and branches. This dew provides the water that the plants need. Green moss, ferns, and exotic, colorful orchid flowers hang down from the canopy. Other plants and bushes crowd between the trees, and hundreds of insects crawl (爬行) and fly amid the vegetation. Cloud forests are as diverse and interesting as rain forests or temperate forests.

Cloud forests have animals that aren't found anywhere else, such as mountain gorillas and a strange woolly mammal called the mountain tapir. The colorful Quetzalcoatl bird is also found there, and golden toads hop among the bushes. Lately, scientists discovered a new cloud forest animal, a black and brown rodent that looks like a cross between a squirrel and a rat. Cloud forests probably contain hundreds of other rare and fascinating plants and animals that people have never seen before.

【推荐2】Phil Wise is a wildlife scientist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil (袋獾)Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, check their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Because a disease is reducing the number of devils, Oddity, a young Tasmanian devil, and 14 others were raised in a preserve and then brought to Maria Island to be set free into the wild.

Life on this island off the coast of Tasmania was a big change for Oddity and the others. These devils bad little experience with other kinds of animals and had to explore the land and find new bones.

Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. Devils also eat animals such as wallabies, wombats, and possums, helping to keep those populations balanced.

But a disease called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, putting them in danger. DFTD spreads when a diseased animal bites a healthy animal. The goal of the scientists w ho set Oddity and the others free was to create a lot of devils which are free of DFTD on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife preserves. This means that if the facial disease causes the Tasmanian devil to die out in the wild, devils like Oddity can be sent back into disease-free areas of Tasmania, giving devils a chance to survive.

Oddity started his new life on Maria Island. And the other animals did so well that 13 more devils were set free. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. They are doing well on Maria Island. and the plan is considered a success. Wise says he is “very happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD It is the final aim of all who work to protect animals.”

【推荐3】A Rare Spotless Giraffe

A female giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Tennessee recently—but unlike her mother she was born without any spots an unusual one.

Standing 14 to 19 feet tall, giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world. When mothers give birth, the young giraffes are already 6 feet tall, and other than in especially rare cases, they’re born covered in brown spots. Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, announced that it welcomed the birth of a reticulated giraffe (网纹长颈鹿) without any spots on July 31st.

“Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet,” the zoo said. The zoo’s director, David Bright, said zoo staff had been reaching out to zoo professionals across the country inquiring about how unusual the giraffe could be. Zoo officials said the only record of a reticulated giraffe being born without spots was in Japan in the 1970s.

Mr. Bright said that the new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. “Being solid-colored, she may not be able to hide quite well,” said Bright. He also thought it was likely that the giraffe would be a “key target for illegal hunters” because she’s so unusual.

Pictures of the young giraffe can be seen on the Brights Zoo Facebook page. In a picture, she, without her spots, stood next to her mother, a normal giraffe, in stark contrast. The zoo is asking the public to help name the newborn. People can choose one of four names available on the zoo’s Facebook page. The names and their meanings are: Kipekee, meaning unique; Firyali, which means unusual or surprising; Shakiri, meaning she is most beautiful; Jamella, which means optimistic.

Bright said that the zoo looked at thousands of names and their meanings before settling on the four available. “Those four are the four the family really loves,” Bright said. “So if she’s named one of those four, we’re very happy.”

According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, there are only about 16, 000reticulated giraffes left in the wild — a more than 50% drop from approximately 36,000giraffes 35 years ago. There are about 117, 000giraffes across nine subspecies(亚种).Many of them are endangered or critically endangered.

1. What can we learn from this passage?
A.This newborn spotless giraffe was 6 feet tall when it was born.
B.Giraffes are the largest animals in the world.
C.Bright Zoo was too surprised to accept this unusual giraffe at first.
D.Only two reticulated giraffes have been recorded to be born spotless.
2. Which has a similar meaning to the underlined phrase “in stark contrast” in Paragraph five?
A.Rather frighteningly.B.Pretty differently.
C.Quite cautiously.D.Very happily.
3. If you were an official of the zoo, which name would you most probably vote for?
A.Unique.B.Sherlock.C.Shaken.D.Surprise.
4. Where can we most probably read this passage?
A.A website.B.A text-book.C.A science report.D.A personal diary.
