Tips for avoiding traffic jams
The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you’ll be prepared and can try another route.
Take the road less travelled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back (偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stopandgo traffic.
Rush hour isn’t just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they’re still called “rush hour” for a reason — everyone’s on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather — if you don’t have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.
Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams
Don’t break the law. You’ve gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders (紧急停车道). Don’t behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there’s a good chance they’ll get caught or cause even more problems.
Pay extra attention to zigzaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes (车道) every 5 seconds or cut you off. Keep checking your windows and mirrors for these lane changers.
Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route midtrip if needed.
Be courteous. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.

“When you come into contact with a virus you've never met before,” says Sheena Cruickshank, a professor of immunology at the University of Manchester, “you've got various barriers (屏障) such as skin and microbiome to try to stop it getting into your body.” If a virus breaks these defenses. it has to deal with our white blood cells,or immune cells.
However, our immune systems may have blind spots. “This might mean that our immune response doesn't recognize certain bugs (轻微传染病),” says Cruickshank, “Personally, my immune system is not necessarily very good at seeing colds.” But a healthy lifestyle will ensure your defenses are as good as they can get.
Cruickshank recommends “eating a more varied diet with lots of high-fiber foods”. Being vegetarian isn't a necessity for microbiome health, but the more plant foods you eat, the better.
To be immunologically fit, you need to be physically fit. “White blood cells can be quite inactive.” Says Prof Arne Akbar, the president of the British Society for Immunology, “Exercise activates them by increasing your blood flow,so they can do their surveillance (监督) jobs and seek and destroy in other parts of the body.” The National Health Service says adults should be physically active in some way every day, and do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (hiking, gardening, cycling) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (running, swimming fast, and aerobics class).
One of the many happy side-effects of exercise is that it reduces stress, which is next on our list of immune-improving priorities (首要事项). Stress hormones can weaken immune function, a common example of which, says Akbar, is when chickenpox (水痘) strikes twice. If you have had it, the virus never completely goes away. “During periods of stress,” he says, “it can reactivate again and we get ill”.
Exercising and eating well will have the likely knock-on effect of helping you sleep better, which is an extra benefit because a tired body is more likely to get a bug. One study last year found that lack of sleep damaged the disease-fighting ability of a type of lymphocyte called T cells, and research is showing the importance of our natural biorhythms (生物节律) overall. “Your natural biorhythms are, to some extent, controlled by sleep,” says Akbar. “If you've got a regular sleep pattern, you have natural body rhythms and everything's fine. If they go out of order, then you've got problems.”

In Japan, the fan was created after the folding wings of a bat, while the Chinese believe that the sight of a woman fanning her facemask at a festival led to the fan’s creation.
The hand fan was taken to Europe by way of trade routes in the 1500s. In Europe, it became a foreign and stylish symbol of wealth and class. It was also seen as a symbol of royalty, as is evident from the two unique fans found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb. The Italians became the first users of the hand fan in Europe. Trade increased and so did the fans. In the 17th century, fan making became a professional undertaking, and the “Association of Fan Makers” was set up. Until the mid-17th century, hand fans, often decorated with jewels, were considered a rare and valuable item and made from expensive materials. Printed fans turned up during the French Revolution, produced to make a political statement.
The next hundred years saw a large range of hand fans being developed. By the 18th century, they were being produced in almost all countries across the world. Some even developed painted fans, which eventually became a recognized art form. In the 1920s,a single ostrich plume (跪鸟,羽毛扇) became a high fashion statement that was dyed to the same color as one’s dress. And at present, different styles of fans are being manufactured, namely folding, brise (made from separate sticks, linked together top and bottom), and cockade (opens into a full circle).
Hand fans became rooted in Spanish culture and the Spanish are still using them for their original purpose — that of keeping cool. The Japanese hand fan symbolizes various things, such as friendship, respect and good wishes. It is given to people on special occasions, since Japanese people believe that the handle of the fan represents the beginning of life and that the ribs (伞骨) are for the roads of life, going out in all directions.

Because running is a popular form of physical activity, study coauthor Zeljko Pedisic and his workmates chose to take a bird's eye view of what past studies of running and the risk of death had concluded. The team collected 14 papers that collectively studied over 230,000people for the effects of running on cardiovascular disease, cancer and other causes of death. Most participants(参与者) were from U.S. and European populations.
Pooling the results from these 14 studies showed that running led to lowering the risk of cancer-related death by 23%, the risk of cardiovascular-related death by 30%, and the risk of death from all other causes by 27%. Those benefits appeared even when people ran relatively slowly and for under an hour a week--less time than the World Health Organization recently.
There are some warnings to the research, though. Among other things, possibly these benefits were found because all the 14 studies of running and the cause of death only included healthy people from the get-go, the authors write. Also, only two of the papers recorded how people’s running habits changed over the years, and how often people ran was self-reported in other papers.
Though the results suggest that people might need less of a workout than the WHO might suggest, that doesn’t mean it's time to change those standards, Pedisic says. There are several other health factors that need to be examined besides the risk of death, he says, and people need other ways to get fit, too.
1. What's the new study mainly about?A.Running as slowly as possible could keep you healthy. |
B.Running led to lower risks of death than other activities. |

In the past 40 years, Six Rixen USA has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors. The park was the brainchild of engineer Bruno Rixen. Born in 1931 in Germany, Rixen grewfrustrated with the sport of water skiing, which required pulling by a motor boat.
“He used to wait for four hours in line to do three laps around the lake, ” explained Allan Wlodarczyk, the manager of Ski Rixen USA. He added that riding five minutes and waiting another four hours sparked Rixen’s idea of cable parks. Rather than relying on a boat, Rixen considered his own cable way. He also designed skis and set up a power source.
“The first cable was actually an old farm tractor, ” Wlodarczyk said. “Rixen took the wheels off, attached some ropes to the wheel disks, and started pulling people back and forth around the lake.” Over the years, Rixen improved his design and earned several patents. He opened the world’s first commercial cable water park in 1966 in Benidorm, Spain.
The sport grew from entertainment to international contests. Rixen died in 2020, but his idea has taken hold around the world. Today, there are more than 500 cable water parks on different continents. Typically, the cable tows riders at a speed of about 20 miles per hour.
But for beginners, who can take lessons, the speed is about 15 miles per hour.
Ski Rixen USA also offers riding opportunities and events to people with special needs to ski effortlessly. “We have a specially designed ski, called a sit ski,” Wlodarczyk said. “It’s a larger board with a lot of surface area.
