Have parents ever wondered how they can encourage the children to practice their English?
Be enthusiastic and involved
Be enthusiastic about the language themselves. If children see their parents reading, watching films and speaking in English, they will be inspired to do the same. Actively be involved in the children’s English learning experience, rather than expect them to study on their own. Give the children lots of praise, encouragement and support.
Make learning fun and enjoyable
Think about the children’s personality, interests and things that they like when suggesting ways for them to practice English. Very active children may like to play action games, but quieter children may prefer word games or card games.
Support the children’s schoolwork
Children are often reluctant (不情愿的) to do their homework or study for school tests. Establish a regular homework routine, allowing the children some choice in what time and where they study.
A.Share the experience |
B.Here are four tips for success |
C.Follow the children’s personality and interests |
D.It will increase their self-confidence and motivation |
E.Provide help, and try to be supportive and encouraging |
F.Children love role-playing and using their own imagination |
G.Learning a language should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience |

As a high school basketball coach my “mission” was to teach and inspire kids around the world to “Achieve Straight A’s in the School of Life!” I recently turned age fifty and the book is now published in English as well as Spanish; plus, the foundation is launched. The organization is called the School of Life Foundation and the book that we give to kids is called Learn to “School” Your Toughest Opponent. Over the past two years we have placed this curriculum in the lives of close to 20,000 youth across sixteen states and eleven countries. The School of Life Foundation continues to grow each week.
The “Straight A’s in Life” system contained in the workbook has ten steps as follows:
·Appreciate — Have more gratitude in your life
·Assist — Serve others every day
·Attitude — Choose yours each morning
·Aim — Learn to focus by setting goals
·Associate — Make good people a part of your life
·Align — Get organized
·Action — Make things happen or watch and wonder
·Avoid — Stay away from things that will harm you
·Adapt — Turn every challenge into an opportunity
·Always — Remember to pray and ponder each day
My heart and soul is touched every day as I learn of a new story of a young person's life improving by using this journal workbook while “Living the A's” in life!
I am now “Living My Dream” of making a difference in the world. I chose to not give up over the past sixteen years when obstacles and discouragement got in the way. You have to perform with passion!
Your mission in life may be large or small, but is vital to all of us no matter what it may be. What are you doing today to find it? Are you living your dream? I am simply the guy next door encouraging you to get started today!

When you’re experiencing difficulty, it’s always helpful to have a support system to get through it. No man is an island. Knowing this, there are a few ways you can become supportive of a family member who is in the midst of a struggle.
Offer legal resources. If you have family members who are in trouble with the law, you can offer assistance by pointing in the direction of various legal resources, you can even decide to cover a part of their legal fees in court.
Provide encouragement. When people are down on their luck, it’s really easy for them to get discouraged and give up. Instead, it’s a wise move to offer words of encouragement to the person. Always remind them that they’re strong, capable, and more powerful than they realize.

“My father wrote me a lovely letter before he died. It is the most cherished thing I own.” Have you ever heard someone say so?
As you all know, your houses, cars, jewels or even money are your financial properties, which are relatively easy to pass along because they are in a physical form. But don’t let your possessions become the only representations of your life. Your thoughts and life journey are equally valuable.
Studies have shown that kids who know about their family’s past are more empathetic, have better coping skills and higher self-esteem.
Create a catalogue
Before you begin, check what you’ve got. If you want to pass along family stories or wisdom, list everything available to you, such as photos and letters from your parents.
Make a plan
Once you know what you’ve got and what you need, make a list that details how you’re going to produce what you’re missing and how to record it.
You can’t possibly get everything done at once. By taking active steps and starting with the easiest-to-create projects, you can bring memories to life. For example, you can write a short article about your childhood or film a two-minute video about your wedding day. When you see the results of these smaller projects, you may well be inspired to create more.
A.Take simple steps |
B.Get more specific |
C.And it’s also significant to consider how to keep it. |
D.Then figure out what you still need to add to your collection. |
E.For older adults, passing on their life stories helps decrease depression. |

Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A former research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are ready for use for free while some contents are not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level because there is a reduction in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users are likely to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Feedback in the app is highly thought of. More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
1. What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?A.It only considered users of a limited kind. |
B.It just focused on positive results. |
C.It was only carried out before class. |
D.It used out-of-date methods. |
A.It's used by more advanced learners. |
B.. All the contents are free to use. |
C.Most users consider it satisfying. |
D.It's more popular with female learners. |
A.cause | B.solve |
C.increase | D.practice |
A.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers. |
B.Students won't suffer nervousness in learning languages by using Busuu. |
C.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners. |
D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class. |

For the study, researchers played recordings of foreign words and their translations to sleeping subjects enjoying deep sleep, a stage when a person has little consciousness (意识) of their environment. To ensure that the results were not compromised by foreign language words that subjects may have had some connection with at some point in their waking lives, researchers made up totally artificial foreign words. When the subjects woke up, they were presented with the artificial words again without their translations. The subjects were then asked to imagine whether they meant an object that was smaller or larger than a shoebox.
Unbelievably, the subjects were able to correctly classify the words in this way at an accuracy rate that was 10 per cent higher than random chance. That’s not a rate high enough to have them suddenly speak in a foreign tongue, but it is enough to suggest that the brain is still absorbing information on some level, even during sleep.
“If you present ‘biktum’ and ‘bird’ to sleeping humans, their brains can make a new connection between the known concept ‘bird’ and the completely new and unknown word ‘biktum’,” Züst explained. “This sleep-formed memory trace (痕迹) lasts until the following wakefulness and can influence how you react to ‘biktum’ even though you think you’ve never met with that word before.“I find it amazing that humans are competent at such complex information processing without consciousness,”said Züst.
The next step for researchers will he to see if new information can be acquired quicker during wakefulness if it is already presented during sleep. If so, it could forever change how we train our brains to learn new things. Sleep learning might become a widespread practice.
1. What can we do according to the new study?A.Improve our memory greatly. |

From 1997 to 2008, the number of American middle schools offering foreign languages dropped from 75percent to 58 percent. From 2009 to 2013, one American college closed its foreign language program; from 2013 to 2017, 651 others did the same.
At first glance, these statistics look like a tragedy (悲剧). But I am starting to accept the strange idea that maybe they are not. What is changing my mind is technology.
I was in Belgium not long ago, and I watched various tourists from different nations use speech translation apps to change their own languages into English and French. The newer ones can even reproduce the tone of the speaker’s voice.
I know a foreign language is a window into a new way of understanding the world. But even beyond the fact that this idea has been rather oversold, can we really say the low level of French or Spanish we and our classmates usually picked up in school really gave us a new look into the world and our lives in it? And if our goals are more limited and practical --- for instance, getting directions to the bus station in Rome-technology now makes that possible at the press of a button. With a smart phone and an app, foreign languages will no longer present most people with the challenge they once did. Learning to speak a new language well will be necessary for those who want to engage with (从事) literature or media in the original language, as well as those of us who find pleasure in it just because they are “there”. Strange as that is, it is in its way a kind of progress.
1. What is the author’s opinion about the drop in foreign language learning in the United States?A.It is a tragedy that needs to be avoided. |
B.It is an unacceptable situation that harms society. |
C.It is a challenge that will be overcome in the future. |
D.It is a positive development due to advanced technology. |
A.Unconcerned. | B.Doubtful. | C.Curious. | D.Supportive. |
A.It makes the process easier and within reach. |
