Highly Effective Study Habits
For students, sometimes it’s not easy to concentrate on studying. If you want better grades, you need more effective study habits. The key to effective studying isn’t studying longer but studying smarter.
● Plan when you’re going to study.
Successful students schedule specific times when they are going to study—and then they stick to their schedule.
● Set a specific goal for each study.
●
As your most difficult assignment or subject will need the most effort, you should start with it first. Once you’ve finished the most difficult work, it will be much easier to complete the rest. Believe it or not, this will greatly improve the effectiveness of your study sessions.
● Practice by yourself.
Practice makes perfect. You can practice by yourself by testing yourself with either practice exams, or flash cards. If a practice or old exam from a course is available, use it as a guide.
We’re confident that if you develop the habits above, you’ll see a great improvement in your academic success.
A.Improve your study effectiveness. |
B.You should study regularly all the time. |
C.Start with the most difficult subject first. |
D.Studying without direction is not effective. |

Start by finding alternatives.
Besides, you can benefit from working on flexibility. If something changes in your schedule, take a moment to assess how it affects you and whether you can realistically manage the change in plans. Rather than reacting immediately or assuming the worst, calmly and logically work out whether or not you can accommodate the change. You might find that you are in fact able to cope with it.
What’s more, don’t forget to seek support. If you feel you’re struggling with something difficult, it can be helpful to seek the support of your colleagues, friends, or family members.

Get organized. By becoming more organized, you can reduce your stress level. Make a daily schedule of all your activities. Another way to become more organized is by getting your supplies and desk in order. Arrange your notes and assignments by topic or date so you can easily find information.
Don’t put off. Delaying doing your schoolwork will only make you more stressed. If you get an assignment that is due in a month, and you don’t have any other assignment to finish, go ahead and begin working on it.
Exercise. Performing some sort of physical activity for thirty minutes three times a week will largely lower your stress level. Taking the time to exercise will help get your mind off the stress in your life.
Get plenty of sleep and eat healthily. You need between seven to eight hours of sleep per night in order to rest your mind and body so they can perform well during the day. Eating well-balanced meals will provide you with enough energy to finish your daily activities.
Take a positive attitude. If you are always negative, then stress will control you. By looking at things in a positive light, you will not only reduce your stress, but you will also feel better about yourself.
Realize that it’s okay to say “no”. If you already have a full schedule, don’t attempt to add anything else to it. If your friends want you to go out at the last minute but doing so would conflict with your schedule, don’t feel bad about turning them down. They will understand. They have been stressed before too.

Some of these come easily and automatically, such as when we were young and everything was new. Those new things made our passions rise. That first day of school, seeing old friends and new friends, could be a quick and huge hit on the passion button.
In my book How to Ignite Your Passion for Living, I make the point that, from my experience, passion can start to fade a bit as we age. But, thankfully, passion can be manufactured. All you need to do is put something together in an unusual, better, or at least new-to-you way.
One of the keys to manufacturing passion is to set difficult goals and work towards them. I clearly remember when I was 27 years old, I set a goal of making $ 1 million for myself by the time I hit age 30. What a huge turn on that was for me. It really boosted my passion. I was one year late in hitting that goal, but having that huge and exciting goal really kept me and my passion going.
From about age 25, your brain produces less and less dopamine and serotonin, the hormones (荷尔蒙) that help you feel good and fan the flames of passion. Although a child’s body are full of these hormones, we need to work on stimulating our system to produce more of these hormones as we age. We can do this by eating the right foods, exercising, and, most importantly, setting the right goals that keep us going after them.
Passion for living comes and goes. Our big challenge then is to figure out what our passion is, what turns our lights on and gets us excited. When we figure that out, we can do it more and more. And it’s always a good idea to write down our goals that keep our passion going so it will stick in our brain, pushing us to go after the goals.

With the coming of new technologies, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful — both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks — both on a computer and by hand. The study found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) “those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”
1. What can we learn from Berninger’s first study?A.It focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer. |

Although I studied for over 5 hours reviewing everything, I went to sleep with a feeling that I was going to fail. I hate failure. It’s the worst feeling ever. What was wrong with me? I should have believed in myself and expected to get an A, but my mind was in a different direction. The next morning, I walked to school not ready to conquer this day.
I got into the exam room and forgot almost everything that I studied. It disappeared from my mind like dropping cotton candy into water. I felt dizzy (头晕的). It was like I could see myself in the future fearing the moment when I finally got my score. I decided to take a bathroom break. It might help me cool off and get everything I studied back into my mind. It didn’t work. Standing in the bathroom I felt as if I was never going to succeed. But I had to return to the room. At last, I just wrote down as much as I knew and turned in my test.
After the test I heard everyone else in the class saying how easy the test was. My eyes twitched (抽动) and I felt a tear flowing down. Why did I have anxiety? Why couldn’t I be normal?
I texted my parents, saying I was a failure. They replied, “I’m sorry you didn’t do well. But you can’t always be perfect. Doing your best is all that matters.” I learned a lesson from what they said, I guess. I can’t always be perfect. It’s important to study hard, but I shouldn’t stick to perfectionism. Having a positive mentality is the main way I will get a good grade. Science test tomorrow and I will think positive.
