Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita is an elite (精英) climber and has climbed Mount Qomolang-ma and Chogori (the second highest mount in the world). In 2016, she was chosen as Nation-al Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year. Since the birth of her son, her climbing has taken a back seat, but she would like to set out to inspire him.
Pasang is a skilled climber, having climbed Mount Qomolangma and Chogori. But to get there she had to overcome unbelievable adversity, as in Sherpa culture climbing is seen as a male activity. People would say she shouldn’t be with men and climb that rock.
Then when she had her first child, Eichan Nurbu, she faced fresh challenges because she was expected to stay at home and look after him as this was viewed as the mother’s responsibility. It’s difficult for her to balance (平衡) this with the climbing. But Pasang said that she wanted to inspire her son and show him that he should follow his dreams, so on his second birthday, November 14, 2019, she climbed Cholatse — a 6,440-meter-high mountain in the Qomolangma region.
Pasang said, “I learned so many things from my mother. She was single. She raised two kids by herself. She never went to school. From her, I saw how a woman can be strong. I have big respect for all the mothers, because the mothers are very strong. They’re always there for their children. They sacrifice (牺牲) their dreams for children. Everybody should have their dreams. Now, I’m a mother, but I’m still having my dreams. Everybody has a right to realize their dreams. Most importantly, I want to inspire my son to follow his dreams.”

It’s part of a growing effort to serve almost 20 percent of the world’s population who do not speak languages covered by present translation systems. “Properly understanding one foreign language is hard enough, let alone (更不用说) so many different languages in the world,” said Scott Mann, the co-CEO of Flawless AL. “Nowadays, the only way to do translation has been to turn to human translators who have learned foreign languages and try to break language barriers (障碍) for different uses.”
Work on improving translation software has been underway for decades. New technology has been developed to ensure accurate (精确的) translations from one language to another. Meta is planning a long-term effort to build MT (machine translation) tools that will include most of the world’s languages. The company is building a new AI model called No Language Left Behind. It will learn from languages with examples and use them to enable expert-quality translations in hundreds of languages.
“Breaking language barriers would be great, making it possible for billions of people to have information online in their native or preferred languages,” the Meta company said. “Advances in MT tools won’t just help those people who don’t speak one of the languages that are widely used on the Internet today: they’ll also change the way people in the world share ideas. Better translation software also makes good business sense. When companies go global, it’s hard to have native-speaking support agents for every language. So if the translation software can help them chat with and email their customers, the efficiency (效率) can be immediately improved.”
But some experts say that Meta’s machine translation project faces great difficulties. “The industry is still in the research mode (模式), and we’re excited to be a part of that, but it’s not about presenting a product that eight billion people will start using tomorrow.” said Jesse Shemen, the CEO of the translation software company.

Nfusion gives teenagers classes where they study or discuss some troubling subjects. Drugs and bullying (欺凌) are just a few of the topics that are discussed during the class on Saturday.
“I had a bad attitude,” said 17-year-old Titeana Davis. Davis went through the Nfusion Program last year. The teen, who once had trouble with her attitude towards others, says the program has changed her life, “They taught me that a bad attitude is not going to get you anywhere. Drivers will be accused if they are caught going over the new legal limits for eight illegal drugs and eight prescription drugs.
Police will use ‘drugalysers’ to screen for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside, and they will be able to test for other drugs including ecstasy, LSD, ketamine and heroin at a police station. The Department of Transport (DoT) hopes to roll out more comprehensive roadside drugalysers at a later date.
People using prescription drugs, including morphine and methadone, will not be punished as long as levels are below those defined by the new law. The levels for illegal drugs are set much lower, with even a small amount leading to accusation.
The new law will complement existing rules, which make it an offence to drive when influenced by any drug.
A crime for drug-driving will lead to a minimum one-year driving ban, a fine of up to £5,000 ($7,700, 6,860 euros), up to six months in prison and a criminal record, the DoT said.

She says, “I spent the first few years in America just going through a number of operations to basically straighten me out so I could then be fitted for leg braces (支架) and walking stick.”
“In the early years, it was just me trying to be like my siblings (兄弟姐妹),” she says. “I didn’t want to take the disabled bus to school. I wanted to be able to take the bus with my sister. And so I had to learn how to go up the stairs.”
Later, when she was in her late 20s in New York City, a friend introduced her to a running club for athletes with disabilities where she learned how to use a handcycle: Push a three-wheeled low-to-the-ground bike using only her upper body (上肢).
Within seven months, she learned to swim and to compete using a racing wheelchair. When Dentler finished the triathlon (铁人三项赛), she was motivated to go farther. She soon took up half-Ironman distance triathlons, a distance of nearly 70 miles. But a year later, she made it and finished the race in 14 hours, 39 minutes the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship. She covered all those miles in water and on land, pushed entirely by her arms and upper body. She says, “I think it’s important to stay physically active.
Now, she’s a mom. Dentler volunteered at the school to help kids learn to read, “The kids were very curious. They asked me a ton of questions and it was actually pretty fun to answer them. And the kids’ eyes would get really big when they heard that I could do all of these things.”

In 1986, at 18 months, I was fitted with a prosthetic (义肢) device, I spent my entire childhood and adolescence trying to ease the pains of the stares and pointing fingers from my classmates. By the time I was 8, I had no self-confidence, and the hand I was wearing was making it harder for me to fit in. So I decided I was better off without one.
To prove that I wasn’t limited by my disability, I developed a love for all sports, in particular swimming. I was selected to my first Australian women’s swimming team at age 13 and successfully represented my country for eight years. I realized I’d made a name for myself because of my disability.
In 2021 I was first contacted by Covvi, a company trying to create the world’s most advanced bionic (仿生的) hand. They asked me to try the hand and, if possible, to become a patient advocate (代言人). At first, I said no. Then, curiosity got the better of me.
While I was busy advocating for disability rights, a new generation of leaders, like Amy Purdy and Nick Vujicic, used the power of technology and social media to display wheelchairs or prosthetic devices without explanation. People feared disability less. Society was beginning to see a person first, and their disability second.
As those conversations shifted, I realized that there was an opportunity to use technology to guide future generations. In July 2022, I decided to try the hand.
The role of patient advocate is a great honor. Through sharing my journey, I’m able to reach thousands of other people who would benefit from its extraordinary capabilities. That’s why I wear a bionic hand — not because I’m broken, but because I have an opportunity to improve the human capabilities that already exist.

【推荐3】It all started when the Gill brothers’ requirement for money to buy more Nerf guns and video games was turned down by their parents. Seeing their parents refuse to fork out the money, the three brothers — Collin, 13 years old, Ryan, 11 years old, and Austin, 8 years old — came up with a solution. They taught themselves how to make candles, learning tips from YouTube videos, and a business was born.
Almost two years later, the boys’ candle-making shop called “Freres Branchiaux” which means “Gill Brothers” in French has developed beyond anything they expected. With 36 stores selling their products, Freres Branchiaux sells about 400 candles a month. The boys have cash for all the Nerf guns and video games they ever desired. But instead of spending much on toys, most of the money goes back into the business, and 10 percent of their profits are donated to Washington-area homeless shelters every month. Collin said it makes him feel like the business has a purpose beyond business. “The community helped us, so we have to help back,” the brothers said. As soon as the brothers find the funds and space, they hope to open a shop and hire homeless people as employees.
The candles, which come in 23 scents, such as Lavender Crush, Lime Cotton and Whiskey Sweet, are the boys’ most popular products. They also offer other things like soap and bath salts. Each product is made by one of the brothers. As the oldest, Collin drives most of the production, making between 50 and 60 percent of each month’s production. Collin doesn’t mind shouldering the largest share of the work because he thinks his brothers are still too young. Collin typically spends three to four hours each day working in the Gills’ candle-making station.
Celena and her husband, Patrick, offer advice and supervision (监督), but the boys mostly manage the business themselves. All the boys plan to make Freres Branchiaux their life’s work. They would like it to grow into a huge brand, maybe around the world.

What sports are you into? Football? Tennis? Swimming? If you’re looking for a change, you might like to try one of these.
Octopush
Octopush (or underwater hockey as it’s also known) is a form of hockey that’s played in a swimming pool. Participants wear a mask and snorkel and try to move a puck (水球) across the bottom of a pool. The sport has become popular in countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. An ability to hold your breath for long periods of time is a definite plus.
Zoobombing
Zoobombing involves riding a children’s bike down a steep hill. The sport originated in the US city of Portland in Oregon in 2002. Participants carry their bikes on the MAX Light Rail and go to the Washington Park station next to Oregon Zoo (which is why it’s called “zoobombing”). From there, they take a lift to the surface, and then ride the mini-bikes down the hills in the area.
Office Chair Racing
Office Chair Racing consists of racing down a hill in office chairs that can reach speeds of up to 30kph. Strict rules are in place for competitors: they’re allowed to fit in-line skate wheels and handles to their chairs, but no motors. “We check each chair carefully in advance,”one of the organizers explained. The participants race in pairs wearing protective padding as they launch themselves from a ramp (坡道). Prizes are given to the fastest competitors and also for the best-designed chairs.
Fit 4 Drums
Fit 4 Drums is a new form of cardio-rhythmic exercise. Led by an instructor, the class involves beating a specially-designed drum with two sticks while dancing at the same time. It’s the first group fitness activity where you get to play a drum while getting an intense workout. A sense of rhythm is a definite advantage!
Horse Boarding
Horse Boarding involves being towed behind a horse at 35mph on an off-road skateboard. Professional stuntman Daniel Fowler Prime invented the sport after he strung a rope between his off-road “mountain board” and a horse. Participants stand on a board while holding onto a rope, attempting to maintain their balance as the horse gallops (疾驰) ahead. “The horse rider and the horse have to work together because if they don’t, the horse goes flying,”Daniel explained.
