Experts are warming about the risks of extreme picky (挑剔的) eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss. Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old after his sight had gone to the point of blindness. Tests showed he had serious vitamin deficiency (缺乏). Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, “His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.”
The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet. Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.
He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost mineral from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age. In terms of his sight loss, he met the standards of being blind. “He had blind spots right in the middle of his sight,” said Dr Denize Atan. “That means he can’t drive and would find it really arduous to read, watch TV or recognize faces.”
Dr Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help or those who are concerned, she advised: “It’s best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal.” She said multivitamin tablets can supplement (补充) a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily. “It’s much better to lake in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet,” she said, adding that too many certain vitamins, including vitamin A, can be harmful, “so you don’t want to overdo it.”

Research found that among poor families, the extra minutes at mealtimes made great improvement of a normal weight for the youth. The factors are likely to be communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”
The researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the effects of factors and mealtime behavior of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have an obese child. Similarly, families, who talked more together and interacted more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy-weight children.
Teaching low-income families how to make the most of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr Fiese said, “This is something we can target and teach.” She added, “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their sometimes complex living arrangements that may challenge their abilities to plan ahead and arrange a single time to communicate with each other.”
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor access to healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”

Researchers have found that red wines rich in flavonoids (类黄酮) are best for our health. Flavonoids are best known for their antioxidant (抗氧化) qualities and help the body resist viruses. Red wines also contain antioxidants, which help the body resist cancer and cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. Red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir contain the highest concentrations of antioxidants and flavonoids. Other red wines, such as Merlots and Red Zinfandels, contain fewer flavonoids, but more than most white wines. So the best bet for drinking wine for our health is to stick to red wines containing more antioxidants and flavonoids.
Although white contains components that are central to good health, it doesn't mean that we can get drunk every night. Don't overdo it — but adding a glass of wine to your daily diet can definitely make a difference to your health. Paracelsus, the noted 16th-century Swiss physician, wrote, “Wine is a food, a medicine and a poison — it's just a question of how much you drink." Most health officials agree that one or two four-ounce glasses of wine per day can be beneficial to men, while women should limit their consumption to one four-ounce glass per day.
Cardiovascular expert, Professor Roger Corder, has spent years studying the evidence of health benefits from red wine. Specifically, he wondered why the French have a lower rate of heart discase, despite the fact that their diet is extremely rich in fats. He concentrated his research on the southwest portion of France, where life expectancy (平均寿命) seemed to be highest. He discovered that the region produces local wines, which contain the highest levels of antioxidants of any wines in the world. This led him to further research on the amazing medical benefits of red wine.
While wine may not be able to help a man escape from death or growing old, we certainly can consider adding a glass of wine or two to our daily diet.

My father was in the military service when I was a child, so we moved every two years, but we insisted on going to bookshops wherever we lived. He would take me to the nearest bookshop every Saturday morning and wait patiently while I browsed(随便看看) —after all, the choosing of a new book is something that cannot be rushed. And so started my lifelong love affair with bookshops.
One day I was thinking up the setting for How to Find Love in a tiny bookshop when a feeling of calm, contentment, and excitement came over me. It was a feeling of perfect happiness. That was my light bulb moment: My book would be set in a bookshop, and I could explore what books meant to each of my characters and how they had shaped their lives.
The book isn’t just about discovering romantic love. It’s about finding the love of books: something that can sustain you throughout your life, and provide escape, entertainment, education, comfort, wonder. And, as I learned from my own father, it’s a love you can share with everyone. There is nothing more satisfying than sharing something you have read with someone else, knowing they will love it as much as you do.
But if we are to keep bookshops alive, we need to use them, and to encourage the next generation to make them apart of their life and view bookshops as a treat, a pleasure, an adventure, a gateway, so they become something we can’t live without. Thus my challenge to you, fellow readers, is to go to your local bookshops as often as possible and come out with something that might change your life.

When Jeremiah A. Chatbot III was just a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, his parents motivated him to do great things in life. “I’ve always been a mama’s boy,” he told the Campus Times in 2017. “She always told me that I would be abandoned unless I became a doctor or lawyer, and that motivated me.”
Chatbot excelled in high school, was accepted to every college he applied to, and eventually enrolled at UR. He tried both pre-med and pre-law, but earned poor grades in both. Chatbot decided to transfer, getting into the University of Pennsylvania mostly due to his high school grades. Here, he did much better academically, switching his major to Marketing and Business (against his mother’s wishes). Equally important for his academic success at UPenn was that he perfected the art of cheating during exams. His social life also excelled, causing him to create a network of people who later found success. Chatbot applied to several graduate programs as a senior, but was only accepted to a Ph.D. program at the Simon School of Business in Marketing.
After completion of the program, Chatbot was hired by UR to do marketing work. He found success by working the phrase “ever better” nine times into a single 30-second advertisement for Strong Memorial Hospital. In 2015, Chatbot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Despite the award, Chatbot never received tenure or respect from his mother, who said in an interview she wishes he were a “real doctor.”
In 2018, just months after his interview with the CT , Chatbot passed away from system overload. The symptom monitoring app now used by the University was originally going to be named for Frederick Douglass or Susan B. Anthony, but as Chatbot’s possessions left an endowment to the University, the app was named in his honor.
