No one can resist (抗拒) the temptation of snacks. But at the same time, you may be underestimating (低估) how many calories a snack contains. What would happen if you had a bag of crisps (炸薯片) a day? Eating an extra packet of crisps a day could lead to a weight gain of 6. 35 kg after a year, The Times reported.
People underestimate the number of calories in their snacks, with experts warning that eating a bag of crisps every day could lead to a stone of weight gain in a year. A survey of around 2, 000 adults found that about three quarters underestimated the impact of what a small reduction could have. One in ten believed that cutting 200 calories a day would not affect weight. At the same time, many people didn’t seem to know exactly how many calories were in their snacks. When it came to snacks, people struggled, with 95 percent guessing that half a sharing bag of tortilla chips had 214 calories on average, almost half the true figure of 447.
Can’t we resist buying snacks? The food environment is to blame. Even though we all know snacking is bad for our health, we can’t help but fill our shopping carts with snacks. Don’t always blame yourself for poor self-control, and supermarket shelves also have to carry this “pot” half.
Hugo Harper, head of Nesta’s health team, said the pressure to resist high-calorie snacks should not be put on consumers (消费者) and that our food environment needed to be changed. He said,“Our environment has a real impact on what we eat, from advertisements and supermarket promotions to what’s available in our local corner shops. ”
Hugo added, “If we had fewer cues to snacks, or were pushed to buy fewer high calorie snacks, we should be able to see real change. ” New rules coming into force next month will restrict promotions on foods high in fat, sugar and salt in big shops.

Have a long, comforting talk about it with her.Or head to the fridge for the ice cream. But can that really help you feel better—or just make you feel sickeningly full?
Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We've all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a coming exam. But when done a lot—especially without realizing it—emotional eating can affect weight, health, and well-being.
One of the biggest beliefs about emotional eating is that it's caused by negative feelings.Yes,people often turn to food when they're stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious,or bored.Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.More often, though,it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or relaxation in food.
We all have our own comfort foods.Amazingly, they may vary according to moods and sex.One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies.Bored people desire salty, fragile things, like chips.Girls go for chocolate and ice cream.
This brings up a curious question: Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?Researchers are looking into that, too. What they're finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset.
We're all emotional eaters to some extent. But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.
Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. For example,do you come home from school each day and automatically head to the kitchen? Stop and ask yourself,“Am I really hungry?” Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.

Weight problem is a complex condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one's behaviors. Experts say that the most successful weight-loss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise. People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in,increase the number you use, or both.
A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans:Atkins,The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans.
At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and one-half kilograms on average. They also did better on tests for cholesterol(胆固醇)levels and blood pressure.
Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to eat less sugar. He says that there was not enough money to study men,but that men would probably have similar results.
Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a few people have long-term success with dieting. It says those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.

However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, then you’d better save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories(种类)of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed(分析) the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards(标准). And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that "whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste." Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.

The findings, based on a national survey of nearly 12, 000 middle and high school students, were published in a journal(期刊).
“Across the board, children who engaged in any kind of activity were better off than kids who watched a lot of TV,” said study co-author(合著者) professor Penny Gordon Larsen of the University of North Carolina.
Other studies have linked certain content of television programs, such as violence and sex, to children’s behavior. But beyond this issue, Gordon Larsen said that kids who spend hours watching TV” miss opportunities” to develop skills, learn teamwork and have other experiences that their more active peers(同辈) benefit(受益) from
That doesn’t mean, however, that kids have to be on the football team. The study found that some activities like skating and skateboard(滑板)——which adults sometimes frown upon——were also related to better self-respect and less risk-taking.
That skaters were better behaved than TV-watchers might come as a surprise to some adults who consider these teens to be bad, according to Gordon Larsen. Skateboarding is forbidden in many public areas, and some communities(社区) disagree to build skating parks. But if kids who like to skate have nowhere to do it, “ it’s a shame,” said Gordon Larsen.
Not only should parents encourage their kids to engage(参与) in the physical activities they enjoy, she said, but schools and communities should also do more to create opportunities for children to be active.

Mollie, 11, has required hospital treatment several times while Jake Says he always finds breathing more difficult when there is heavy traffic. Air quality has an enormous impact on their lives and both noticed a marked improvement during the spring lockdown because of the epidemic (疫情). Jake said, “During lockdown there was a noticeable difference in air quality. I didn't suffer any asthmatic attacks during that period. These days you can feel the effects.”
However, under current COVID-19 restrictions in the UK this winter, many people probably will have to work from home. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) says while emissions (排放) have dropped this year because we've been travelling less and doing less, the expected use of gas boilers to provide heating and hot water could rise by more than half.
Heating accounts for nearly 37% of the UK's total carbon emissions. Modelling by the ECIU suggests a 56% increase in boiler usage this winter resulting in a 12% increase in emissions of carbon. The ECIU says that's enough to offset the last two years' worth of progress on reducing traffic emissions.
Jess Ralston, author of the analysis for the ECIU, said, “Working from home and having increased gas use in the home could be really critical for air pollution and also climate change. The way we heat our homes needs to change if we are to get to net zero by 2050.”
Jess Ralston said, “The increase in pollution from gas boilers expected this winter provides a graphic illustration (图解) of their forgotten role in air pollution. And it is a role set to continue without practical policies to decarbonize home heating. ”
The government is set to publish its Heat and Buildings Decarbonisation Strategy in a few weeks which is expected to give details on plans to try to switch British homes to cleaner sources of heat.
