In the     1     (讲座) hall, I saw mixed expressions (表情) on the faces of many students: excited, nervous, and     2     (焦虑的). No doubt about it: they were this year’s new freshmen. My own first day at high school     3     (闪现) into my mind.

I was not an     4     (外向的) person in     5     (初级的) middle school. But I decided to make some changes in     6     (高级的) high. So, I put on a     7     (自信的) face, ready to make a good     8     (印象) on others. However, things didn’t turn out as I hoped.

The     9     (校园) is very large. I got totally lost when finding the classroom for my English class. When I found the classroom     10     (最终), the class had begun already. The teacher was friendly and helpful. She let me in and found me a seat. And there was this     11     (家伙) introducing himself in perfect English. The next is my turn. So I, not     12     (害怕的) at all, introduced myself in English too, only less perfect though. But when I get started, I noticed all these     13     (令人尴尬的) smiles on the classmates’ faces. To tell you the truth, I was a little     14     (生气的)at that time. When I’d finished ,the teacher asked me in Chinese     15     (好奇地), “Are you an     16     (交换) student too?” “No,” I said. “If not, you can use Chinese in a math class,” the teacher smilingly responded.

We use both words and body language to     1     our thoughts and opinions in our     2     with other people. We can learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language. Words are important，but the way people stand，hold their arms，and move their hands can also give us information about their       3    .

Just like     4       language, body language     5       from culture to culture. The     6     thing is using body language in a way that is     7     to the culture you are in. For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. In other countries, by     8     , eye contact is not always     9     of. In Japan, it may     10     (demonstrate) respect to look down when taking to an older person.

Some body language has many different uses. Perhaps the best example is smiling. A smile can help us get     1     difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers. A smile can     2     down barriers. We can use a smile to apologise, to greet someone, to ask for help, or to start a conversation. Experts suggest     3     at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend.
