The Adoption Option
Adopting a pet is rapidly becoming the preferred option for many people who want to add an animal companion.
An affordable choice. It’s true that many people are happy to part with thousands of dollars for purebred and “designer” crossbred dogs and cats, but rescue pets have a lot going for them and can be more affordable to purchase.
Homeless animals can make wonderful pets. People often assume that dogs and cats end up in shelters because they’re unwanted or badly behaved. There are many reasons owners may need to rehome their pet — divorce, lack of suitable accommodation, or the time and money needed to care for a dog.
Adult animals have benefits. Generally, if you decide to buy a pet from breeders, only very young animals are available.
There’s something else to keep in mind.
A.Choose an appropriate animal from a reliable source. |
B.But shelters have a wide range of pets for you to choose from. |

The four dolphins were seen in the water near the Fossil Park, Florida, US, on Sunday. Experts from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) had monitored the dolphins’ activities in the past few days and hoped that they would swim out with the tide (潮水).
But when the dolphins struggled to leave the canal, brave volunteers joined members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to form a rescue team to free them. Dozens of people gathered to take videos and pictures of the kind act. A team of 14 volunteers held hands to act as a block to guide the dolphins out of the narrow channel. They shouted and patted the water with their hands to direct the dolphins to the vast waters of Riviera Bay. Dolphins find their way in the water through echolocation (回声定位). That means, by making high-frequency sounds, they can recognize the echoes of sound waves to find their way around.
Andy Garrett, a biologist of the FWC said, “We were able to keep that chain together. The dolphins were interested. They actually came over right away.” He added that when the team reached a bridge, the dolphins appeared a bit nervous and started doing some spins. “They made one real hard pass at our team and then went under the bridge and took off,” Garrett said. The operation lasted about 45 minutes and the rescue team did not use nets or any items that could stress the dolphins.

You can find Nate Fuller counting butterflies. The Sarett Nature Center needs an accurate count of Mitchell's satyr butterflies to help preserve one of their last known habitats. They're very particular about the kind of habitat where they can live, which is part of what makes them so rare and amazing indicators for our water quality. Today, Sarett expert Ashley Cole-Wick with Michigan's Natural Features Inventory helps Fuller count. She says "When I first started working on the butterfly in 2013, we had 18 populations and this year in 2019, we have 10."
The Mitchell Seder went on the endangered species list in 1991. Initially it was thought that loss of wetlands contributed to their decline. Fuller says "It's not just habitat availability. Its groundwater and the amount in the quality of groundwater coming into these wetlands seem to be a challenge for the butterfly. Nothing has all been sorted out exactly. ” While the decline is likely a combination of factors. the fact that water quality might contribute is alarming because the wetlands are the headwaters for the Midwest's rivers and streams.
A captive breeding (人工繁殖)program was started four years ago at the Toledo Zoo to help get to the bottom of the mystery. Today Director Ryan Walsh who heads the program says it's been, the only successful captive program. The caterpillars (毛毛虫)spend the winter in a special weather control room that help determine the Mitchell satyrs don't do well below 4. 4 degrees Celsius, a temperature that prevents the Fen wetlands from the hard freezes which kill the insects. With that knowledge, the program produced 1300 new eggs this summer, a development that may go a long way toward restoring the population. And if all goes well, may one day the Mitchell satyr butterfly earn a ticket off Endangered Species List.

There is an object that’s pretty much guaranteed to arouse your cat’s interest. That object, as the Internet has so thoroughly documented, is a box. Any box, really. Like many other really strange things cats do, science hasn’t fully cracked this particular feline (猫科的) mystery.
The box-and-whisker plot
Understanding the feline mind is extremely difficult. Still, there’s a sizable amount of behavioral research on cats who are, well, used for other kinds of research. These studies have been taking place for more than 50 years and they make one thing quite clear:
This is likely true for a number of reasons, but for cats in stressful situations, a box or some other type of separate enclosure can have a strong impact on both their behavior and physiology.
Ethologist Claudia Vinke of Utrecht University in the Netherlands is one of the latest researchers to study stress levels in shelter cats. Working with domestic cats in a Dutch animal shelter, Vinke provided hiding boxes for a group of newly arrived cats while keeping another group from them entirely.
The ‘If it fits, I sits’ principle
Some feline observers will note that in addition to boxes, many cats seem to pick other odd places to relax. Some curl up in a bathroom sink.
So there you have it: Boxes are insulating, stress-relieving, comfort zones—places where cats can hide, relax, sleep, and occasionally launch a surprise attack against the huge, unpredictable apes they live with.
A.Your furry companion obtains comfort and security from enclosed spaces. |
B.Others prefer shoes, bowls, shopping bags, coffee mugs, empty egg cartons, and other small, enclosed spaces. |
C.She found a significant difference in stress levels between cats that had the boxes and those that didn’t. |
D.A box, in this sense, can often represent a safe zone, a place where sources of anxiety, hostility (恶意), and unwanted attention simply disappear. |
E.So rather than work things out, cats tend to simply run away from their problems or avoid them altogether. |
F.Thankfully, behavioral biologists and veterinarians have come up with a few interesting explanations. |
