Since 2012, Korean American farmer Kristyn Leach has been growing plants on her own land. Her two-acre farm, called Choi and Daughters, is in Winters, California. Leach’s farm provides vegetables and herbs native to Korea and East Asia.
Leach was born in Daegu, South Korea, and then adopted into a family in New York. As a child, she was drawn toward her grandmother’s big garden. Her interest in farming continued into adulthood. In Bolinas, California, Leach met her mentor (导 师), farmer Dennis Dierks. The two bonded over their admiration for Korean natural farming. Asian American farmers are a key part of the history of farming in America. Leach’s farm is seen as a recent addition to this long history.
Ten years ago, Leach received her first order for perilla, a leafy green herb with a sharp taste which is popular in Southeast Asia. Soon, Leach wanted to try producing her own Korean seed varieties. Leach struck up a partnership with the seed company Kitazawa and produced some Korean chili pepper seeds for them. The seeds were a success. Today, she continues to add new seeds for Kitazawa to sell.
Leach’s perilla experiments introduced new foods to her area. Soon, Asian American restaurants began to partner her farm. She started sharing her vegetables and greens with local kitchens. Despite her successes, Kristyn Leach found 2020 to be a challenge for the farm. News of the disease shook up the produce orders. Many local restaurants she worked with struggled to stay open.
Now, demand was growing for her seeds. Leach discovered that people found in her seeds a way of getting meaning from their food. Home gardening allowed people to work with her seeds on their own time. This made Leach ensure that her work mattered. Leach enjoys growing seeds that connect people with their families and histories. For her, sustainable farming practices and seed preservation are key to her success.

Israeli scientists discovered that the plants hear bees approaching and attempt to lure them in with sweeter nectar (花蜜).In several experiments, they found that playing audio recordings of buzzing bees around certain flowers will cause the sugar concentration in the nectar to rise by about 20% in less than five minutes.Such a rapid reaction by plants to sound had never previously been reported.Just to make a comparison, the researchers also tried a higher frequency noise—like that made by a mosquito or a bat—and the flowers did not respond.
The authors pointed out that the behavior is actually in line with the natural order of things, considering that a plant’s ability to sense its environment and respond to it is critical for its survival. So, it seems that plants have some sort of consciousness.
This is not the first time that plants have reacted to the sound around them.In a 2009 study, the researchers found that women’s voices help make plants grow faster. In that experiment, tomato plants were found to grow two inches taller when they were tended to by a female gardener.
What if we told you that a potato chip bag left on the floor of a break room could listen in on office gossip? As people were talking around the potato chip bag, they were sending tiny sound vibrations (震动) into the air. Those vibrations then hit lifeless objects around the room.If you had a camera that was zoomed in on one of those objects extremely closely, in theory, you could actually see the object move along with the vibrations. You could then feed that video into a computer program that could translate the vibrations and you could play back the audio of the conversation that just took place.
So the next time you’re at the botanical garden or in a grocery aisle, be careful what you say.Someone—or something—might be listening.

The village of Potthakudi contains only 120 homes and has a total of 35 streetlights. Unfortunately ,the misguided mama bird had decided to set up housekeeping in the town’s main lighting switchboard (配电板).
The nest and its inhabitants were first discovered by Karuppu Raja, the man tasked with turning on the streetlights each evening. A lifelong bird lover, Raja posted his find to local social media to warn the citizens of his discovery and ask for their cooperation in taking a hands-off approach to the unexpected guests.
“Switching off the lights is the only solution because the bird will fly once it realizes there is a human touch or contact near its nest,” Raja wrote on WhatsApp. “We should save the bird and its babies at any cost.”
While some initially voiced concerns that lack of nighttime illumination (照明) would be inconvenient ,Raja was eventually able to persuade his fellow villagers that any sacrifice would be worth it in the long run. “I explained that so many birds have died out and we should not let Indian Robin go the same way,” Raja recalled.
So, rather than ousted the bird, the villagers agreed to observe a blackout (断电) until the baby birds were old enough to fly away. The town spent a total of 45 days and nights in the dark, even disconnecting the switchboard from the power source to keep the mom and her chicks safe.
After mama Robin and her babies finally took off, the blackout was lifted, but the village’s extraordinary protection efforts for the sake of one lone bird and her babies didn’t go unnoticed.
A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush, but a bird in the switchboard has earned Potthakudi a reputation for kindness that’s likely to light up smiles for quite some time to come.

This day also marks the 50th anniversary of an international agreement between governments to ensure the trading of wild animals and plants—which is estimated to be worth billions of US dollars globally—doesn’t threaten species’ survival.
The voluntary deal, called the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES), provides varying degrees of protection to more than 37,000 species globally. The text of the convention was agreed at a meeting on March 3,1973 and it came into force in 1975. It provides a framework for 184 participants to ensure sustain-able trading of wild species for products such as food, fur and medicines.
“Without CITES, we’d lack a vital mechanism to turn off the ever-flowing and sorrowful deal of species driven by market demand,” said Abigail Entwistle at conservation charity in a press release.
The mountain gorilla is one species benefiting from a total trade ban under CITES in partner ship with this charity. Since this began, the population size has risen fourfold to more than 1,000 individuals. The pygmy hippos(侏儒河马)are also protected by CITES. They are found in the forests and swamps of West Africa, with most living in Liberia. Recently, conservationists have confirmed that pygmy hippos have a wider distribution than previously thought.
Grenadines pink rhino iguana(犀牛鬣蜥)is a striking species, which is threatened by hunting, because it still lacks CITES protection. Since 2016, the charity has been working with local and international partners to protect this species. The important point is that it works. The charity says“a CITES listing would be the logical next step”to better protect its survival.

In my adult years, however, I’ve noticed far fewer of these insects. A lot of my friends and families have made the same observation. This is why I was so happy to see a good number of fireflies in our small lawn (草坪) the other night.
My 9-year-old daughter, a girl to not one — but two biologists — is following in her parents’ footsteps already. She is crazy about all wild things. Needless to say, she was pleased with the chance to put off bedtime and to explore a new natural wonder with Mama when I called: “Honey! Come out and see all the fireflies!”
Without wearing shoes, she rushed into the summer night to look at one of the most magical shows of nature — a field of fireflies! It was a moment I would never forget.
So, what’s changed? Why are so many of us seeing fewer fireflies? It mainly has to do with habitat loss caused by increased development and our American obsession (痴迷) with large lawns and “tidy” views.
In our case, we are seeing more fireflies because we’ve recently let parts of our lawn “go”. A neighbor asked us the other day, “Do you guys mow (割草)?!” In some places we do; in others we only mow once a year. We now have a lovely little lawn under our apple trees that is delivering big rewards. We enjoy the free-growing wildflowers by day and the tall plants support more fireflies for us to enjoy at night.

Smith, who began modeling five years ago and won The Face of Kurvacious Model Competition last year, was diagnosed (诊断) with retinitis pigmentosa (色素性视网膜炎) at the age of 12. The rare genetic condition worsened her vision.
She explained that there were few visually damaged role models in the public field. And while the first New York fashion show starring blind models took the stage in 2016, visually damaged models still don’t have a largo presence in fashion.
So Smith began planning her own show over a year ago. She initially planned for only a handful of models, but after announcing the event, she expanded the number of participants after reaching more visually damaged woman that she expected. “I’m inspired even by my own self,” she said.
Rafia Lawal, also a model, 37, was diagnosed with cataracts (白内障) as a young girl. She auditioned (试演) for a spot on “America’s Next Top Model” during the show’s early seasons but wasn’t selected. She blamed it on her previous lack of confidence and insecurity due to her disability. “Instead of looking at the camera, I was kind of closing my eyes,” she said. Now filled with confidence, she said she viewed the event as a chance to correct the belief that blind or visually damaged women don’t care about fashion.

The record was then held by a Ukrainian chess player, who qualified for the title in 2002 at the age of 12 years and seven months.
On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani came one step closer to achieving his dream by becoming America’s newest national chess master. The chess genius, who practices for up to 11 hours every day after school, says the secret to his success is thinking of his plays ahead of time. Tani said, “On a normal position, I can do up to 20 moves ahead of schedule.”
The now fifth-grader fell in love with chess in 2017 after being exposed to the basics by a part-time teacher at his elementary school in New York. However, his mother, Oluwatoyin, was reluctant to allow him to join the school’s chess club. The family of four, who came from Nigeria, were living in a homeless shelter and did not have extra funds to spare.
When Oluwatoyin explained the family’s situation to the chess club’s instructor, Russell Makofsky, he immediately decided to teach the young boy for free. Less than a year after joining the club, he had gained seven trophies (奖杯) and was ranked 27 in his age category. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made the national headlines when he defeated 73 competitors to win the New York State Chess K-3 Championship. His achievement went viral (传播开来) and a GoFundMe campaign, set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough funds for Tani and his family to move into their own home.
Tani’s path was documented in a book. The book is currently being adapted for the big screen. We wonder if Tani will get to play himself in the movie!

Confucius lived in the kingdom of Lu, part of today’s Shandong province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. His childhood was sad. His father died when he was only 3 and he had to work to help his mother. But young Confucius didn’t give up on studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from noble (贵族的) families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that everyone has something worthy to learn and to teach. “When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I select their good qualities and follow them. I take their bad qualities and change them in myself.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

Carter liked to spend time around UT, because he dreamt of being able to continue his study in the university and becoming a writer. After running into Carter many times, UT student Ryan Chandler decided to interview him for a project for the Daily Texan, the student newspaper of UT.
“I interviewed him on Austin’s homeless problems. After I heard his story, we kept in touch and really became friends. I learned he wanted to get back to UT, so I decided to help him,” said Chandler. “He had got 87 hours, very close to a degree. Now, with changing degree requirements, he only has 64 hours to go.”
With the help of Chandler, who worked with the university office, Carter was assigned an adviser by UT’s College of Fine Arts. “It’s the greatest gift I’ve ever received,” Carter said. “He did what had to be done to get me back to school, and I couldn’t have done it without him.”
After seeing a magazine article about Carter, a UT schoolmate decided to pay his tuition fees without telling Chandler his name.
Doug Dempster, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said in a statement, “David Carter’s decision to complete his degree is a testament to finishing well what was started, and stopped, even many years earlier. He only attended school through the fourth grade; at that point, he was apprenticed(做学徒) to a printer in a nearby town. After a while, he left the printing business and was apprenticed to a Lancaster, Pennsylvania candy maker. And at the age of eighteen, he opened his own candy store in Philadelphia. In spite of his talents as a candy maker, the shop failed after six years.
After the failure of his Philadelphia store, Milton headed for Denver, where he learned the art of making caramels(焦糖). Then in Denver, Milton once again attempted to open his own candy-making businesses, in Chicago, New Orleans, and New York City. Finally, in 1886, he went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he raised the money necessary to try again. This company— the Lancaster Caramel Company—established Milton’s reputation as a master candy maker.
In 1893, Milton attended the Chicago International Exposition, where he saw a display of German chocolate-making implements. Fascinated by the equipment, he purchased it for his Lancaster candy factory and began producing chocolate, which he used for coating his caramels. By the next year, production had grown to include cocoa, sweet chocolate, and baking chocolate. The Hershey Chocolate company was born in 1894 as a subsidiary(子公司) of the Lancaster Caramel Company. Six years later, Milton sold the caramel company, but reserved the rights, and the equipment, to make chocolate. He believed that a large market of chocolate consumers was waiting for someone to produce reasonably priced candy. He was right.
Milton Hershey returned to the village where he had been born, in the heart of dairy country, and opened his chocolate manufacturing plant. With access to all the fresh milk he needed, he began producing the finest milk chocolate. The plant that opened in a small Pennsylvania village in 1905 is today the largest chocolate factory in the world. The sweets created at this facility are favorites around the world.
The area where the factory is located is now known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Within the first decades of its existence, the town of Hershey thrived, as did the chocolate business. A bank, a school, churches, a department store, even a park and a trolley system all appeared in short order; the town soon even had a zoo. Today, a visit to the area reveals the Hershey Medical Center, Milton Hershey School, and Hershey’s Chocolate World—a theme park where visitors are greeted by a giant Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. “Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee’s story didn’t end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.
