If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of children. Today, some children are too fat, and this is because of their bad eating habits (习惯). Most children are fond of food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People call this kind of food “junk food”.
We find many children eat unhealthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have proper (正常的) food for lunch. They don’t like vegetables, and many of them don’t like to eat fruit. They love to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar or fat.

And when we do, we tend to reach for junk food or other comforting but unhealthy foods. Unfortunately, this doesn’t solve emotional problems. In fact, emotionally eating lots of food with little nutritional value can weaken our immune systems (免疫系统) and worsen our moods.
Eva Selhub, a doctor who specializes in stress and medicine for the body and mind, says that if we want to feel better, we need to fuel our bodies in ways that reduce stress. But eating processed foods runs counter to what we expect. She added, “Not only does the original emotional issue remain, but you also feel guilty for overeating. The foods themselves can increase tiredness, anxiety, and depression.” Mixing these problems, you stop learning healthier ways to deal with your emotions, and you feel increasingly powerless against both food and your feelings.
Stress eating tends to be automatic (无意识的), such as eating chips without even thinking about it. Hunger, on the other hand, lasts longer. Therefore, Selhub suggests checking your stomach before getting a snack. Ask yourself, “Am I eating because I’m hungry? Or is it because I feel stressed or sad?” Most emotional eating is linked to unpleasant feelings, but it can also be caused by positive emotions, such as rewarding yourself for achieving a goal or celebrating a holiday or happy event.
If it is emotional eating, Selhub recommends turning to other sources of comfort. Breathing exercises, physical movement, and developing hobbies are a few ways. She also suggests trying to stick to your normal healthy eating schedule and make eating into a ceremony — a ceremony of nurturing and fueling your body.
It may seem that the main problem is that you feel unable to deal with your feelings that you’re facing, so you avoid them with food. Allowing yourself to feel uncomfortable emotions can be scary. But the truth is that when we don’t worry about our emotions all the time, even the most painful and difficult feelings will die down quickly. Try to become mindful and learn how to stay connected with your moment-to-moment emotional experience.

This is because apples were one of the first foods that medical professionals recognized as healthy—their benefits became obvious when, quite simply, doctors found that people who ate apples were sick less often than those who did not. Today we have a more specific understanding of why apples are so beneficial to overall health.
Apples can help keep your levels of bad cholesterol (胆固醇) down. The pectin (果胶) in apples helps you to maintain cardiovascular health and reduce LDL cholesterol(which is the “bad” kind). Apples themselves do not add cholesterol to your diet and are full of water and fiber to help prevent the cholesterol in other foods you might digest. According to Health Diaries, people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.
Apples are naturally low in calories and high in water content. Eating an apple can satisfy your hunger and keep you from reaching for high-sugar, high-calories snacks. By eating apples, you will be more able to maintain a healthy weight because they fill you up, potentially stopping you from eating food that encourages a waistline increase.
Apples contain respectable levels of boron (硼), which helps build healthy bones, and can also prevent diseases like arthritis. Apples are rich in vitamin C, which is known to help build immunity.
Studies have shown that apples can decrease the risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and liver cancer. One theory is that the apple skins are responsible for this, so be sure not to peel your apple before you eat them, as you could remove some of the health benefits.

At first, 40 to 60 bikes will be available only to city workers. People will give their old bikes to the city to use in the program. If this program is successful, one day more than 1,000 bicycles will be available. Everyone, not just city workers, will be able to use these bicycles.
People in Fresno, California already have a free bicycle program. In fact, this idea began in Amsterdam over 40 years ago. These programs encourage citizens to get out of their cars and onto pollution-free bikes.
Fresno's Yellow Bike Program puts about forty bicycles around the city. The bikes are painted bright yellow so people know they can take them. When people take a yellow bike, they can ride to work or to shopping areas, and then leave the bike for the next rider.
Some people worry that the free bikes will be stolen. However, theft hasn't been a problem in free-bike cities by now.
While most people think the bike program is a good idea, only a few say they will use it. "I will still drive my car," says Joanna Greene. "San Francisco has a lot of hills. My office is at the top of Potrero Hill. I don't think I'm in good shape. And, wouldn't I have to carry a helmet with me all the time?"
Phil Chung agrees, "There is too much traffic. Riding a bicycle can be risky. There are not very many bike lanes. " He continues, "Plus, it's too cold in the winter. And what if you ride a bike to work, and then there isn't one to ride home?"
Program leaders know there will be problems. But they think it's worth trying. "It's not the solution for everyone," states Sylvia Pass. "But if just one hundred people use it every day, that's one hundred cars that aren't on the streets, one hundred parking spaces that aren't used. I think it's a great" beginning. "

For some, that means photographing every dish, but others are taking it one step further. Sophia Hampton, a senior at Staples High School in US, chooses to make her own food. She has been published in Future Chefs, a cookbook of recipes (食谱) by teens.
Hampton’s best advice for those who want to be foodies is to get in the kitchen.
“Start cooking,” she said. “There are so many resources online, like recipes and articles about food. Go to your local farmers’ market and start cooking with them.”
Besides blogs and online resources, there are also hands-on cooking classes for students. The Chopping Block, a Chicago cooking school, offers many different classes for teens, including courses on chocolate and French food.
By attending cooking classes, surfing online and going to restaurants, you can find endless recipes. But sometimes becoming a real foodie means being behind a camera. As our food-loving culture becomes more popular and teen-friendly, social media apps like Facebook, have become major players in food culture.
“Getting involved in foodie culture is as easy as having a camera and a social media app,” one foodie said. “I always go to streets and farmers’ markets to take beautiful pictures of food. Wherever food prices are expensive, the photos are free.”

Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.“ Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in an annoying situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly things that happen to our everyday life when someone falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes of people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents (口音), the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The famous Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humour.
Mr Bean is the role played by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world wouldn’t do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. As a result, British sense of humour has become well known to many people.

The scientists trained the bees by giving them a treat — a sugar-water solution (溶液) — every time they were exposed to the scent of a mink (貂) infected with COVID-19. Each time the bees were exposed to a non-infected sample, they wouldn’t get a reward. Eventually, the bees could identify an infected sample within a few seconds — and would then stick out their tongues like clockwork to collect the sugar water.
Bees aren’t the first animals to detect COVID-19 by scent. Researchers have also trained dogs to distinguish between positive and negative COVID-19 samples from human saliva (唾液) or sweat with fairly high levels of accuracy. A small German study found that dogs could identify positive COVID-19 samples 94% of the time. That’s because metabolic changes from the coronavirus make an infected person’s bodily fluids smell slightly different from those of a non-infected person. But researchers still aren’t sure whether animals are the best bet (赌注) for sniffing out COVID-19 cases outside the lab.
“No one is saying they can replace a PCR machine, but they could be very promising,” Holger Volk, a neurologist, told Nature. PCR machines are what lab technicians use to process standard COVID-19 swab tests. At the very least, certain animals could be useful for identifying COVID-19 in places or countries in which high-tech laboratory equipment is scarce or inaccessible.
Wageningen scientists are working on a prototype of a machine that could automatically train multiple bees at once. Then bees can use their skills to test for coronavirus aerosols (气溶胶) in the surrounding environment.
1. How did the researchers teach the bees to identify COVID-19?A.By offering bees some rewards. |
B.By infecting bees with COVID-19. |
C.By raising bees with sugar water. |
