Nicole Latham is a 21-year-old law student from University of Leeds. When she’s not studying for her degree, Nicole competes in weightlifting competitions. She also does a good job in karate.
On top of gym and martial arts, Nicole is also in and out of the doctor’s office. She was diagnosed(诊断) with multiple sclerosis(MS),a rare disease, a year ago. The first attack happened while she was preparing for her A-Levels, a hugely stressful time for many students. And at the time, all she thought about was: stress. But it turned out to be vertigo(眩晕) and likely the first MS attack.
Nicole carried on preparing for her exams. She sat with one eye closed to improve her vision which was damaged from her vertigo experience. That was when she decided to act and head back to the doctor’s office. She took loads of medicines, but no progress was made. Feeling something might be going wrong, she immediately went to the hospital for further examinations.
Following an MRI scan, she was diagnosed with MS. After this first attack and her MS diagnosis, Nicole didn’t experience another for a few years. But in August 2021, she had another. This attack made her left hand shake for two months. Despite the obvious challenge caused by the disease in daily life, she didn’t let it get in her way. And her goal was to show other young people with disabilities that they could live their lives and still enjoy an active lifestyle.
Today, Nicole uses her page not only to spread awareness of MS, encouraging people not to miss symptoms(症状), as she did at first, but also to show people they can live a full and satisfying life with MS. She wants to show the highs as much as the lows.

Watch your kids closely.
When we see a child acting in a manner that we think is inappropriate, we need to consider that the child may bear too much stress. Given this, it's important to look at their behaviors carefully.
Understand the effects of adversity (逆境)on children.
While many kids are experiencing a stressful situation right now, those who have been exposed to other bad events in childhood are at an increased risk of struggling during and after this crisis.
Adults must recognize that for some kids, the newfound loneliness brought on by Covid-19 feels like a gift. While we may be struggling with schools being closed, kids could be feeling happy. We might assume our kids miss their friends, but they may appreciate having more time with us. And some who were dealing with bullying or social challenges at school may be relieved not to have to see other kids.
Find" stress destroyers” that work for your family.
It is recommended that parents help kids avoid the harmful effects of stress by first talking with them about the pandemic.
A.We should consider what need the behavior is attempting to meet during this difficult time. |
B.Avoid making assumptions. |
C.Stress is bad for children's health. |
D.It leaves children feeling stressed. |
E.Pay attention to children's manners. |
F.When we can predict, hopefully we can prevent. |

Improved symptoms are linked to slimming down the unexpected part of the body - opening the door to better treatments. Professor Richard Schwab, chief of sleep medicine at Pennsylvania University, said: "Most clinicians, and even experts in the sleep apnoea world, have not typically focused on fat in the tongue for treating sleep apnoea."Having a large neck was previously believed to be the culprit(引起问题的事物). Prof Schwab said: "Now we know tongue fat is a risk factor and sleep apnoea improves when tongue fat is reduced, we have established a unique therapeutic target that we've never had before.
In sleep apnoea the airways become blocked - leading to snoring . It blights the lives of four and two percent of middle aged men and women, respectively, in the UK. Long term, sleep apnoea is linked with a number of chronic diseases, including high blood pressure , heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and depression.
Analyzing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans of the throat and nose of obese patients, the researchers found reducing tongue fat is the key. They found that a reduction in tongue fat volume was the key factor. Weight loss also resulted in a smaller pterygoid - the jaw muscle that controls chewing. This is irrespective of whether they appear to fall into the typical "high-risk" obese categories, said Prof Schwab.
He added: "Primary care doctors, and perhaps even dentists, should be asking about snoring and sleepiness in all patients, even those who have a normal body mass index, as, based on our data, they may also be at risk for sleep apnoea."
Twenty-two million Americans suffer from sleep apnoea, in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts, causing patients to wake up randomly throughout their sleep cycles. One of the recommended treatments is CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which has been free on the NHS since March 2008.
1. What can we learn from Prof Schwab?A.People with high tongue fat must be at high risk of obesity. |

Researchers from the University of Iowa based their findings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked at the associstion between sunscreen use and melanoms(黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma.
Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (发生率) faster than any other cancer in the United States.
But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.
The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin cancer—people with fair skin and freckles(雀斑), for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often.
The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove how well the products had been applied, said the new study.

As I began my cancer treatments, I met a friend who was going through similar chemotherapy (化疗) procedures. We began to talk about what brought us joy, happiness and satisfaction in our lives. One thing that we had in common was our love for bike riding. We realized that we should bike not just for enjoyment, but to reclaim our lives. We were going to take back control of our lives. That’s when I signed up for the One-Hundred-Mile Century Ride.
The training began just six months after my last chemo treatment. The physical side of the training progressed well, but I had difficulty with the emotional aspect. To overcome my negative self-talk, I wrote out positive statements and read them each day: “I can cross the finish line.” “I can ride one hundred miles.”
When ride day came, it was a cold, windy September morning. At the half-way point I was thrilled that I’d managed to stay the course that far, but I was already exhausted. It was at that moment of desperation that all the months of preparation and all the support of my friends flashed before my eyes. “I can cross the finish line,” I told myself. “I love this challenge.” With the voices of my friends, family and medical team cheering me on from within, I put my bike in its lowest gear, and standing on my pedals, I stubbornly inched my way up the mountain.
Up, up, up. Little by little, refusing to give up, I was climbing. Then all of a sudden, the splendid view opened up beneath me. I had reached the top of the mountain! How wonderful it felt as the breeze rushed through me, filling me with life! I might have lost my marriage, my money, and temporarily, my health, but I hadn’t lost myself.

"I thought the thing I can do fairly uniquely is provide the land and machinery to try to make people's lives better during the lockdown. " Mr Walston, 37, who runs Thriplow Farms, south of Cambridge, said. "The enthusiasm has surprised me a lot, with 114 people from five villages signing up. "
The two 1, 000sqm areas will be open for anyone to help with any job that needs doing. A wide range of vegetables will be grown, including peas, broccoli, sweetcorn, squash, potatoes and leeks. In Mr Walston's scheme, which he has called Coveg, people can do as much or as little as they like and the produce will be shared, and any surplus given to the elderly and NHS workers. None of the produce will be sold and distribution will be only loosely linked to the amount of work done.
He is lending his machinery for the backbreaking work. Farm suppliers are supporting the project, with Kings Seeds and Tozer donating seeds and Howseman Agriculture offering irrigation equipment.
Claire Mackenzie, 47, a doctor from Barrington, has agreed to bring seeds in their own gardens to the community plots. She sees Coveg as a way of connecting local people to the countryside that surrounds them. "We live in an arable area but we often do not know our farmers. This is a brilliant way of pulling people together, " she said. She hopes to get her two teenage sons involved.
Mr Walston's idea has already prompted three local farmers who also want to donate parcels of their land to contact him. They have a corner of land that would be suitable and machinery that would take the backbreaking work out of preparation. They can't wait to offer.

Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities (能力) as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining(下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it --- I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.
Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school.

Self-esteem is our sense of how good we feel about ourselves. It is based on our judgment of ourselves, not on other people's assessment, but simply on our own. Our self-esteem is not dependent on our talent. Some very ordinary people feel very good about themselves, while other extraordinarily high achievers hold low opinions of themselves.
Self-esteem is the primary key to long-term stress management. Why? The first three sources of stress are: predictable life event, unexpected changes and build-up of daily stresses. These are much easier to handle when we believe in ourselves. A positive, healthy self-esteem gives us the “hardiness” (强健) to deal with the difficulties of life, and to see them as challenges to be met, rather than threats to be feared.
The fourth category of stress is entirely the result of a low self-esteem. It is the category of stress that is most common and tiring over the long run. This kind of stress cannot be overcome, or even changed, until the self-esteem problems that cause it are corrected.
Learning to love yourself for who you are is the key to overcoming stress. Self-esteem comes from the self, and cannot be promoted by others. A person who feels that his self-esteem comes from the approval of those around him or her is bound to self-destruct (自毁). One cannot keep the level of “performance” required to please everyone else, especially if that performance disagrees with who you are and is simply a
Only those who can feel the strength of knowing who they are and those who can feel good about that will survive the stresses of life. Self-esteem is the basis of contentment and positive living.

Robert Marchand was born in 1911 in northern France. He enjoys riding a bicycle, and started cycling seriously when he was in his 60s. Marchand is now 105 years old.
On Wednesday, a crowd gathered at the Velodrome National, about 30 kilometers outside of Paris. They were there to see how far he could travel in one hour.
The record for one hour is held by Britain’s Bradley Wiggins, a former Tour de France winner. Wiggins covered 54.5 kilometers in 2015. Evelyn Stevens of the United States holds the women’s record. She went almost 48 kilometers in an hour last year.
In 2012, Marchand set a record for riders over 100 years old when he traveled almost 27 kilometers in an hour. So the question many people asked this week was: “Could he break his own record?” Marchand set off on his record attempt as sports lovers cheered and photographers watched. He moved slowly but steadily around the cycling track.
Marchand is relatively small. He is only 1.52 meters tall and weighs 52 kilograms. When the hour ended, he completed 92 times around the track. That is just over 22.5 kilometers.
After the event, Marchand said he could have done better. He did not see his trainers telling him he only had 10 minutes remaining. “I would have gone faster. I would have posted a better time,” he said.
But the news was still good, as he did set a new record for riders 105-years-old or older. “I’m now waiting for a rival (对手),” he said.
