The end of the year had finally arrived. The first year of my teaching career would be over in a matter of days, but I hated Awards Day. Although I had a class of outstanding students, I feared one student wouldn’t have an award.
Brent just didn’t have the high averages as some of his classmates. As I sat down and began looking over my grade book, I filled in the blanks on the award sheet for the highest grade in each subject. Then, I proceeded to “A Honor Roll” and on through the list. When I began checking averages for the “AB Honor Roll”, I knew Brent hadn’t made it yet now. But while the first honor roll was determined by the average of all grades of the first three months, the yearly honor roll was the average of the final grade in each class for the whole year. Maybe there was a chance.
Brent’s grades may have been considered average, but he was far from it. He was no quitter. That boy was very persistent. If he failed a spelling test midweek, by Friday, he would pass. If his math grade slipped a bit, he’d work to get it higher. Unlike the other students who would often attempt to “one up” one another, Brent’s only competitor was himself, and his goal for the entire year was the AB Honor Roll.
With each report card, his face had fallen when he had missed that elusive (难以达到的) B average, and although he had never made any honor roll, he had never stopped trying to reach that goal. Now, he had one last opportunity. I entered his final grades into the computer and averaged. It was a B! I checked again. Yes, it was a B. His grades had gone up and down. When he focused harder on one subject, another slipped a bit. Overall, he had a B average.

Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor (主办者) for it. Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning, set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr. Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie Lyons.
Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match.
At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine.
Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, “Everything’s cool.”
On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, “Charlie, what’s wrong?”

Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way.
I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. “Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!” Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever there were some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that but for a sports meet. By mistake, my name was put on the list of the women’s 1,500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late. My deskmate was a natural athlete. She said to me, “I couldn’t run that race in your place, because I’ve signed up for three events already.” Other girls of the class said the same.
I was dumbfounded (目瞪口呆). 1,500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare (恶梦) I’d ever have!
“You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they said.
My deskmate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will train together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1,500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. Every afternoon after class, my deskmate ran beside me.
One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if to run beside me.

“Snow!” James begged, looking up at the cloudless, winter sky. “All I need is a tiny, little snowstorm ...”
Zeke, James’ brother, looked out of the window beside him. “You know,” Zeke said, “you could study for your spelling test instead of wishing for a snowstorm. Just an idea.”
“Quiet, you,” James said. He crossed his fingers more tightly and repeated, “Snow ...”
That night, James picked at his carrots for 45 minutes, ate his icecream so slowly that it melted, played ping-pong by himself for more than an hour, and spent the rest of the evening wishing for snow. He didn’t open his spelling book even once.
When James opened his blinds (百叶窗帘) the next morning, he nearly fell over backward. The lawn (草坪) was blanketed with snow. The trees and the cars were covered with snow. perfect, white snow! By the time James ran downstairs, his dad was already digging a path to the driveway, and the radio was announcing school closings. James listened carefully until he heard his school’s name.
“I did it!” he shouted, jumping into the air. “I wished for snow, and it snowed! I made it snow!”
Zeke rolled his eyes and took a bite of sausage. “You didn’t make it snow. Snow is caused by numerous factors, including…”
“Come on!” James interrupted. “Did I or did I not wish for snow?”
“You did,” Zeke admitted.
“And did it snow?”
“Well, yes, but ...”
“But nothing,” James said. He was already pulling on his boots. It’s play time! And play he did. Hand. He made an army of snow ducks. He built what he assumed was the world’s largest snowman. He won the greatest snowball fight Deerfield Lane had ever seen. Then he played solo ping-pong again. Then he played his video game for some more time. He didn’t open his spelling book even once.
“You do know that Ms. Lookingbill will give you that spelling test tomorrow, right?” Zeke asked.
“No,” James said. “I wished for more snow.”
