For your next out-of-this-world vacation, you now have the option of literally going out of this world—but it’ll cost you $ 40 million. Then again, can you really put a price tag on having the time of your life? According to a new report from Popular Mechanics, Russia is looking to build a luxury hotel in outer space. There you will wake up to a breathtaking blue planet—the earth! The hotel is expected to be stationed on the International Space Station (ISS).
While space tourism itself isn’t exactly a novel idea, the notion of building a hotel out there hasn’t been raised before. Really, other companies are still focused on the transportation part of the puzzle — after all, a trip to space is enough for most folks.
According to Popular Mechanics, the hotel will include a luxury orbital suite with big windows, personal hygiene (卫生) facilities, exercise equipment, and yes, WiFi. Because if you can’t share your experience on social media, did it really even happen?
Of course, the reasons behind the hotel aren’t just for fun and games. Apparently, space tourism might be able to help the Russians pay for another module to add to the international Space Station. Russian space contractor RKK Energia is currently building the first such module, which will give scientists a laboratory and power supply station from which to conduct tests.
If any of this is going to happen, however, Russia is going to have to hurry. With the ISS expected to be out of use in 2028, there’s little time to build the hotel and find wealthy tourists to actually buy a trip into outer space.
So if you’ve recently come into a fortune and are interested in investing in what could be the time of your life, ISS is calling your name.

【推荐1】Imagine wearing high-tech body armour that makes you super strong and tireless. Such technology, more specifically called an exoskeleton, sounds like the preserve of the Iron Man series of superhero movies.
Yet the equipment is increasingly being worn in real life around the world. And one manufacturer---California’s SuitX---expects it to go mainstream. “There is no doubt in my mind that these devices will eventually be sold at hardware stores,” says SuitX’s founder Homayoon Kazerooni. In simple explanation, an exoskeleton is an external device that supports, covers and protects its user, giving greater levels of strength and endurance. Sometimes also referred to as “wearable robots”, they can be battery-powered and computer-operated, incorporating motors and hydraulics. Or they can be more simple, passive designs that use springs and dampeners.
“Integrating machines with humans opens up a new realm of opportunity,” says Adrian Spragg, an expert on the technology at management consultancy Accenture. “Many of the early applications have been focused on military and medical applications, but in the last several years there’s been an explosion of use in a range of cases.” This expansion, which has come together with rapid advances in the technology, has seen exoskeletons increasingly used by manufacturing workers. Versions for consumers are also now being developed to help people more easily do everything from DIY, to walking, climbing stairs, and other daily activities.
One report says sales are now due to rocket as a result. Global exoskeleton revenues are expected to rise from $392m in 2020 to $6.8bn in 2030, according to a study by ABI Research. SuitX’s “suits” are now being tested by car manufacturers General Motors and Fiat. Prof Kazerooni, who is also the director of the University of California’s Berkeley Robotics and Human Engineering Laboratory, says that the primary benefit of the firm’s exoskeletons is to prevent muscle fatigue. “We’ve shown that muscle activity in the back, shoulder and knees drops by 50%,” he says. “If muscle activities drop, that means the risk of muscle injury is less. This means that factory or plant managers get more productivity, their insurance costs are lower, and there are less workdays lost to injury. There’s less cost and more productivity.”
General Motors is also looking at a battery-powered exoskeleton glove developed by Bioservo. This glove, called the Iron Hand, has sensors and motors in each finger, which automatically respond to the level of force that the wearer applies to his or her hand when lifting or gripping something. The glove therefore takes up some of the strain. BioServo says it can increase the wearer’s hand strength by 20% for extended periods.

While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen (氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO2 in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO2, it may be a feasible solution.
For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO2 every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.
The concept of turning CO2 into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts (催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO2 into liquid fuel. As the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral (碳中和的).
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO2 into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.
Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO2 collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”
1. Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?A.Unique. | B.Practical. | C.Time-tested. | D.Quick. |
A.It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage. |
B.The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive. |

【推荐3】Which is better for Earth: an electric or gas-powered vehicle? The answer to this question might seem blindingly obvious. Of course electric cars must be better for the environment, because they don’t give off greenhouse gases as people drive. However, electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t perfect, and they come with their own set of polluting problems. Their batteries require a large amount of energy to produce.
Battery production is just one part of an electric car’s life span. A study looked at the entire life cycle of an EV’s emissions(排放),from mining the metals for the batteries to producing the electricity needed to power them, and then compared this with the average emissions of a gas-powered vehicle. The team found that when EVs are charged with coal-powered electricity, they’re actually worse for the environment than gas-powered cars.
“Only when connected to the clean energy do EVs have an advantage over the gas-powered cars on a greenhouse gas basis,” said Colin Sheppard, an expert in energy and transportation systems. That’s why more and more countries are decreasing the power supply from coal. In China, the national grid is improving with more efforts in renewable energy. For example, it has twice as much wind energy capacity as the U.S. and it builds more solar panels per year than any other countries.
Sheppard has modelled a future in which all cars are electric. “We want to understand what it might be like if all passenger vehicles were electrified.” The model suggests that if all vehicles in the U.S. were electric, greenhouse-gas emissions would be 46% less every year. This reduction could be increased even further if those vehicles were using a technique known as “smart charging” in which cars are recharged at chosen times (often at night) to reduce the cost of electricity.
In short, it’s far easier to argue for buying an EV than a gas-powered vehicle. But what about the cost? Aren’t electric vehicles too expensive for most people?
1. In which case do EVs get more heavy-polluted than gas-powered cars?A.Being powered only by batteries. |
B.Using coal-powered electricity. |
C.Starting to give off greenhouse gases. |
D.Replacing gas-powered vehicles entirely. |
A.With a discussion. | B.With an examination. |

A.China is making advances in renewable energy. |
B.Compared with gas-powered cars, EVs are at an advantage. |
C.There is still room for the development of EVs. |
D.It’s not a challenge to choose between EVs and gas-powered cars. |
A.Inventing green gas-powered vehicles. |
B.Developing environment-friendly grids. |
C.Getting rid of fossil energy like coal and oil. |

For the past three years, the woman, a mother-of-two who gave her name as Jane, had hidden her fortune from colleagues, friends and family, she said.
“Jane” has remained in her job and, if she ever splashed out on treats for the family, tells her husband she has had a pay rise or bonus.
The woman told her extraordinary story on BBC Radio Five Live this morning.
Presenter Victoria Derbyshire was hosting a phone-in which asked the question: “Is money guaranteed to make you happy?”
“Jane” called in and began, “I won quite a bit of money”, just under£1.5 million, and I’ve never, ever told anybody. Not even my husband.”
Derbyshire said, “You’re kidding me. Why not?”
“Jane” replied, “Fear that it would change our lives too dramatically. My husband had, many years ago, a small drug problem—around 15years ago. And I’m scared with the money and perhaps the high life… he would go back there.”
She continued, “I do feel if I had said, yes, I’ve won this money, that he would have wanted holiday, he perhaps would have wanted to give up work, which would destroy our little family unit we’ve got now.”
The presenter told her, “I’m very surprised, I can barely believe it but it’s clearly true. Do you feel it’s made you happier?”
“Jane”, who said her won was “about three years ago”, said, “It’s nice because I know I haven’t got to worry about bills.”
Derbyshire told her, “I’m full of admiration for you, but is it not a betrayal of your relationship?”
The woman admitted, “I feel terribly guilty in one way, but in another way, we’ve got two young children and I think, well, if their lives change dramatically then it’s not fair on them. So I just want to keep things as they are.”

The newly formed Wild Network—a collaboration of nearly 400 organizations—is attempting to attract youngsters away from television and computer screens to fields, woods and parks. Members of the network include the National Trust, RSPB, Play England and the NHS. Organizers say it is the UK’s biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness and general well-being.
A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, will forecast the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK from Friday. It looks at the increasing link between children and nature.
Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said, “The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation. Time spent outdoors is decreasing, roaming (漫步) ranges have fallen largely, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost.”
Suggestions on how to get more time in nature include collecting conkers (七叶树果),camping, snail racing, and observing autumn colour on trees.
From January, the network will aim to make suggestions on how the government can do more to get children muddy and bright-eyed.
This is not the first time the message of less screen time, more play has been brought up. Children in the 1980s were requested to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don’t You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to “switch off the TV set and go to do something less boring instead”.
1. What does the underlined word “surrender” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Get around. | B.Give up. |
C.Take up. | D.Run away. |
A.To make children read more books. |
B.To help children distinguish (辨别) the natural world. |
C.To get children out of too much homework from school. |
D.To encourage children to participate in outdoor activities. |

“For decades, we’ve been able to see the before and after,” says study leader Kishalay De. “Before, when the planets are still orbiting very close to their star, and after, when a planet has already been swallowed up, and the star is giant. What we were missing was catching the star in the act, where you have a planet going through this fate in real time. That’s what makes this discovery really exciting.”
In 2020, De was studying data, hoping to find evidence of two stars combining with each other. This usually results in bursts of light thousands of times brighter than the stars themselves. But one shining star De discovered was much dimmer (黯淡的), only 100 times brighter. Also, the crash of two stars usually produces hot gas. However, this one was surrounded by dust molecules (分子). De wondered if he had detected a star swallowing a planet.
He and his team spent the next two years examining similar data. NASA provided the final piece of evidence they needed. The images allowed them to confirm that the molecules were traces of a star eating its planet. The scientists said that as the planet was being swallowed, it displaced hot gas from the star. The gas then cooled and created dust. Pieces of the planet also blew away from the star, producing more dust.
Some scientists believe Earth will also be consumed by the Sun in about five billion years. But Mansi Kasliwal, a professor, says humans will not be around then. The increasing heat from the expanding Sun will evaporate (使蒸发) all the water from Earth long before it gets close enough to swallow it, making it uninhabitable. Smadar Naoz, an astronomer, agrees that the Earth’s water sources will dry up. “Whether or not the Sun will swallow the Earth is quite controversial,” she says. “But it wouldn’t matter because it will no longer be our beautiful Earth with an atmosphere and oceans.”
1. What fate does De think the planet is undergoing?A.It is being swallowed. | B.It is being abandoned. |
C.It is becoming larger. | D.It is growing older. |

To use a popular label, the man in the case is a so-called adult baby, because his deeds make him al-most the same as a baby. However, he burns money faster than any normal baby. He spent 2 million yuan in two years overseas, but could not finish even the preparatory course. We do not mean to judge his choice, but someone who lacks the basic ability to survive has little chance of success in any modern society.
In a later interview, his mother was in tears and said she regretted not having taught her son well. She also told the story about how she “educated” her son: by meeting all his demands. When he did not perform well in school, she simply spent money sending him overseas. She would buy whatever he wanted. That was bad for her and bad for him.
No one is born an adult baby. It is a lack of proper education that makes adult babies. The failure of the young man has much to do with his parents giving in to his every demand.
The young man might be an extreme case. However, there are many more families that fail to educate their children properly and simply consider “raising a child” as “buying everything” they want. That might in turn make more adult babies for this society, and it is time for them to change.
1. What can we learn about the young man?A.He is the only one child in his family. |
B.He is poor in study but good at spending money. |
C.His grandmother loves him more than anyone else. |
D.He did well in school before he went to New Zealand. |
A.The young man’s family was wealthy enough. |
B.She wanted to satisfy her son’s need. |
C.The young man could achieve his dream there. |

The Hexa Plant is a six-legged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted plant that carries on top of its head .Using light and heats sensors (传感器) the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out the daylight .If the houseplant needs more sun,the Hexa will walk into the sunlight ;and if the houseplant is getting too hot , the Hexa will go back into the area that blocks direct light The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner .
The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014 .” Plants only receive an action without responding ,”SunTianqi wrote in a blog post .” Whether they are being cut ,bitten ,burned or pulled from the earth ,or when they haven’t received enough sunshine ,water ,or are too hot or cold ,they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them .
According to Sun Tianqi ,for billions of years ,plants have never experienced movement of any kind ,not even the simplest movement .In their whole lives ,they stick to where they were born .Sun Tianqi continued ,” Do they want break their own settings or have a tendency towards this ?I do not know the answer ,but would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants With the help of the robot ,plants can experience the move”.
The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale ,though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model .It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants
