Caregivers care for someone with an illness, injury or disability. Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging.
The first thing to do is learn ways to better help your loved one.
Take time out to meditate or reflect. Spending 10 to 20 minutes twice a day to “clear your head” can work wonders when you’re feeling overburdened. Some caregivers learn meditation techniques from classes or books on the subject, while others simply take time out to quietly reflect.
Exercising is another good way to help mind and body recover. It’s one of the best-known techniques for reducing stress and keeping healthy. A quick walk several times each week gives you significant health benefits.
A.Stress from caregiving is common. |
B.Try to do something you enjoy every day. |
C.You’d better keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings. |
D.Find caregiving resources in your community to help you. |
E.Whichever way you choose, it’s important that you focus on clearing your mind. |
F.There are many good indoor choices, too, from walking in place to yoga or tai chi. |
G.Some hospitals offer classes that can teach you how to care for someone with an injury or illness. |

The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard.
However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don’t normally see.
The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices.
This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.

A study examined responses to parents’ use of playful, emotional, exaggerated tones, known as “motherese” (mother’s ‘baby talk’), to capture a child’s attention. Eye-tracking tests showed that children who did not respond had weaker social and language abilities. Professor Karen Pierce, of California University in San Diego, co-author of the research, said, “We know the earlier we can introduce treatment, the more effective it is likely to be. But most children don’t get a formal diagnosis until around the age of three or four. There is a real need for easy and effective tools that can be used on young children. Eye-tacking is a great place to start.”
In experiments, 653 toddlers aged one to two years old were exposed to two one-minute videos featuring a woman speaking motherese or abstract scenes. Their eyes controlled which one played. Participants without ASD (autism spectrum disorder) showed consistently high interest in the woman speaking motherese, spending an average 80 percent of the time watching it. They largely ignored the second video which showed a busy highway, abstract shapes and numbers and had accompanying electronic music.
However, attention levels of peers diagnosed with ASD spanned the full range of concentration levels, with some focusing 100 percent on the random images. A group who fixed on motherese less than 30 percent of the time could be accurately identified as having ASD through this measurement alone. These children also showed lower scores on subsequent tests of language and social skills.
Whether less attention to motherese is the cause of reduced sociability or merely a symptom has yet to be determined. However, researchers found it appears to be a highly accurate biomarker for the condition. Prof Pierce said, “The fact we can reliably identify children with autism using such a simple and rapid eye-tracking test is really remarkable. In future, we hope to us each ids attention to motherese as a cue for which treatments they may most benefit from and as a tool for measuring how well those treatments work.”

The new analysis, involving 4,793 people who were interviewed every two years between 2005 and 2015, showed that a friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness by the time of the next interview.A friend of that person was 25% more likely, and a friend of a friend of a friend was 15% more likely.
“Loneliness is not just the property of an individual. It can be transmitted across people—even people you don't have direct contact with,” said John T.Cacioppo, a psychologist of the University of Chicago who led the study published in the December issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
Loneliness has been linked to medical problems, including depression, sleep problems and generally poorer physical health.Identifying some of the causes could help reduce the emotion and improve health, experts said.
Although the study did not examine how loneliness spreads, Cacioppo said another research has provided clues.“Let's say for whatever reason you get lonely. You then interact with other people in a more negative fashion. That puts them in a negative mood and makes them more likely to interact with other people in a negative fashion and they minimize their social ties and become lonely,” Cacioppo said.
According to Cacioppo, loneliness spread more easily among women than men, perhaps because women were more likely to express emotions.
Lonely people become less and less trusting others. This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends-and more likely that society will reject them. Therefore, it is important to recognize and deal with loneliness.Cacioppo emphasizes people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks.

The subject of popping a pill to get the recommended daily allowance (定量) of the various vitamins essential to overall good health may be somewhat controversial. After all, different nutrients may be absorbed at different rates by our bodies. Surely we shouldn’t expect one small pill to cover it all.
One vitamin that is vital for good health in so many ways but is too often taken for granted is vitamin D.
While sunlight exposure is beneficial, not everyone benefits from the sun at the same level. Sun exposure near the equator (赤道) is far different from that an Eskimo might receive at the North Pole.

B.Darker skin also absorbs less vitamin D than paler skin. |
C.We get many tips on how to add nutrients to our everyday menu. |
D.Often attention to our nutritional balance can improve the situation. |
