The Waverly Pilot (翻译耳机)

Technology seems to be advancing daily, but the Pilot by Waverly Labs, the world’s first translation earpiece, might be a truly huge step forward for communication.

The product

Though the Pilot is still very much in development, the product will be sold as two earpieces and a smartphone app. When first released, the technology will translate between only five European languages -English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.    1    The app runs speech recognition, machine translation and speech synthesis processes before sending the new speech to the listener’s earpiece.

Applications

2    The added convenience of these will make the device useful in several social spheres, particularly business and travel. While sales meetings and tourism may be revolutionized by the Pilot, the desire to communicate with a foreign crush inspired Waverly Labs’ CEO to develop it.

Sci-fi dreams coming true

3    It reached its US$75,000 goal in 15 minutes, US$ 1 million in hours and eventually more than US$2 million with the help of over 11,000 backers. It seems that the Pilot captured the imagination of many who had seen similar technology in science fiction, like a Forbes writer expressed it in the following quote. “The Waverly Labs Pilot is as close as I’ve seen to the Universal Translator I was promised by Star Trek when I was a kid.”

Flying into the future

Though the Pilot’s translation app is available now, the entire earpiece package is planned for delivery in May 2017 at a retail cost of US$250 to $300.    4    Additional language packages will be developed and sold soon after the product’s release so that people everywhere can make use of this amazing device.

A.The earpiece has microphones to isolate the speaker’s voice, after which the speech will be sent to the app.
B.The pilot can translate the information without any delay and pass it to the listener as quickly as possible.
C.The product proved to be a great success the first time it appeared in the market, which helped its backers realize their dreams.
D.The Pilot is joining other translators like Skype Translator and Google Translate, but it’s the first to add earpieces to the concept.
E.For now, Waverly Labs is still hard at work improving the Pilot’s speed of translation and developing an offline mode.
F.When the fundraising for the Pilot was launched on Indiegogo in May this year, it became apparent just how much the market wanted the product.

文章大意:本文是说明文。本文讲述了斯坦福大学的研究生米莉·萨尔瓦托以及同事研发的“触摸表情符号”。

【推荐1】Touching Emoji(表情符号)

Distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic has made both physical and social connections a touch more difficult to maintain. For Stanford University graduate student Millie Salvato, being apart from her mother on the opposite coast has proved challenging.

1     In a new study, she and her colleagues demonstrated a wearable sleeve that can simulate (模拟) human touch and convey abstract social messages sent electronically. Salvato and her team measured how 37 participants expressed social information in different situations. In each test, one person wore a pressure-sensing device on an arm, and another touched it to respond to situations involving six intended meanings: attention seeking, gratitude, happiness, calming, love and sadness

After collecting 661 touch movements-squeezes, strokes, shakes, pokes, and the like-Salvato and her colleagues mapped the location and pressure of each.     2     Finally, they programmed a wearable sleeve to simulate these movements using eight embedded disks that shake when electronically signaled.

“It doesn’t feel like an actual human hand ... but it doesn’t feel like these separate motions either,” Salvato says, as one might expect from large moving disks. “It feels nice, honestly.”     3     For comparison, a previous study from Gerling’s laboratory found participants could match situations for touches from real human hands 57 percent of the time.

In the new study, “I think it’s interesting that participants can reliably understand what touch has been delivered to them at a pretty high rate, given the scarce amount of information that they have available to them,” Gerling says.

Previous research has found that social touch is important for physical and mental health.     4

A.One can’t help but wonder when new tech will convey emotion through a virtual touch.
B.Even with no training, 30 new study participants correctly matched the simulated touches to the six situations 45 percent of the time.
C.Sometimes a text or video call is not enough, and people in Salvato’s situation often long for a way to send a loving touch or comforting squeeze from afar.
D.In the future, instead of just sending a <3 to a loved one by phone or computer, adding a “touch emoji” might help us feel just a little bit closer.
E.Next, they used a machine-learning software to select the movements that were most reliably part of each response.
F.“It’s a unique work that looks at how our social touch is delivered and then... how to reproduce it,” says Gerling, a touch researcher not involved in the study.

【推荐2】Buildings with windows filled with water could save energy greatly, according to researchers backing the new technology.

Traditional glass windows increase the heat and temperature in the room in summers, and let the heat inside escape in winters, resulting in more electricity consumed for air-conditioners and more carbon emissions (排放). Now, researchers at Loughborough University (UK) have created a water-filled window that can overcome these problems.

The “water-filled glass” (WFG) system, designed by Dr. Matyas Gutai, involves a sheet of water being trapped between a panel (嵌板) of glass, and the water is practically invisible. The windows are connected to an indoor storage tank (箱) using pipes hidden in the walls, allowing water to flow easily between the windows and the tank.

This system allows the house to cool and reheat themselves automatically. When sunlight streams through the glass, the windows keep the buildings cool as the water takes in external and internal heat. This warm water then flows back to the tank. And when the outdoor temperature drops, the stored warm water is brought back to the walls to reheat the building using a monitoring system similar to central heating. The heated water can also be used for domestic (家用的) purposes. Although some electricity is required to pump the water back and forth, it uses much less energy than traditional air-conditioners or heaters.

Dr. Gutai claimed that WFG can save energy from 47% to 72% compared to when using traditional windows. Once launched into the market, the windows will surely make a real splash, appealing to a large crowd of environmentalists and contributing to reducing our carbon footprint. Currently, the inventor team is testing the windows in two areas with different weather conditions. The research reveals that WFG systems perform well in any inhabited climate—keeping buildings in hot climates cool and buildings in cool settings warm—without requiring an additional energy supply.

1. What’s the weakness of traditional glass windows?
A.They are easy to break into.B.They release carbon dioxide.
C.They fail to trap the heat.D.They lead to more energy consumption.
2. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The structure of the WFG system.
B.The working process of the WFG system.
C.The advantages of water-filled windows.
D.The appearance of water-filled windows.
3. What’s the characteristic of the WFG system?
A.It is operated by man.
B.It needs no electricity at all.
C.It recycles the water in many ways.
D.It reheats the house via central heating.
4. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Make a big fortune.B.Draw lots of attention.
C.Form a huge waterfall.D.Take immediate effect.
