China is one of the largest cotton producers in the world. In 2020, China produced more than 5,910,000 tons of cotton from National Bureau of Statistics (国家统计局) , almost 3,000,000 tons more than America, the third largest cotton producer. Most of China’s best cotton come from Xinjiang. Last year, Xinjiang produced 5,160,000 tons of cotton, almost 87% of the whole country.

Why can Xinjiang grow the best cotton? Because cotton needs lots of heat and plenty of sunshine to grow. And Xinjiang has lots of sunshine—about 3,000 hours every year. Long-stapled cotton (长绒棉) is the most famous cotton in Xinjiang. It’s also one of the best kinds of cotton in the world.

Its fibers are longer, softer and whiter than those of other cotton. And it’s warm and comfortable. So it’s good for making cloth and quilts.

Every year, after the harvest season, the fresh cotton goes to the textile factories (纺织厂) nearby. There, the cotton is made into cloth and quilts.

On April 18th, 2021, Yancheng held a big sports event — Marathon. It continued the themes of the previous (先前的) two races: “Yancheng, a place to open your heart.” and the slogan “Run, Yancheng!” At 7: 30 am, the 2021 Yancheng Marathon started at the north gate of the Yannan Sports Centre in Yancheng during the spring season. This year’s event was limited to 15,000 people, including 4,000 for the full marathon, 42.195km. 6,000 for the half marathon, 21. 097km and 5,000 for the mini marathon, 5km.

It was really a great success. The winner of men’s full marathon is Qian Dingbin while women’s is Zhu Dandan; and Wang Congzheng won the first place of men’s half marathon, Wu Haomin won women’s.

Why do people run a marathon? First of all, it can help people get in shape. As we all know, many people don’t have enough exercise and they get fat easily. Besides, people feel relaxed. They will forget their worries and unhappiness when running. Moreover, holding a marathon can improve the environment of the city so that more people know the city’s history, culture, cultural customs, folk customs and so on.

In Hanyang, Hubei Province, there is a place called Guqin Platform. It is named in memory of Yu Boya.

Yu Boya was a great musician of the Zhou Dynasty. He was famous for playing the qin. But he was always unhappy because he thought no one could understand his music.

On the night of one Mid-Autumn Festival, Yu was playing the qin on a boat. As he finished playing it, he heard a loud applause (掌声). It came from a young named Zhong Ziqi. Yu invited him to come on board, and discussed music with him. He was quite amazed at Zhong’s deep understanding, he considered Zhong as his “zhi yin”.

Yu had to leave to continue his journey, but they decided to meet one year later .

It was time for them to meet again. Yu waited and waited, but Zhong didn’t come at all. Then he found a grave (坟墓) with the name of Zhong Ziqi along the river. He played a piece of music with tears. Then he broke his qin, he thought nobody would understand him.

Ever since that day, the expression “zhi yin” usually means a friend who knows your heart.

One day, a young girl named Hua Mulan heard that the emperor wanted lots of men to join the army. One m    81     from each family must join the army. Mulan’s father was too o    82     to join the army. Her b    83     was very young and couldn’t join the army either.
