What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to the USA, you will find that people use both “autumn” and “fall”. Why does this season have two names in English?
According to a Dictionary. com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops (庄稼) would become ripe (成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest (丰收). So in old English, this season was simply called “harvest”.
Then, in 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short.
But at the end of 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, came to England. It gradually replaced “fall” as the word for this season.
At the same time, British people were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today’s Americans have two names for one season.

With her eyes always feeling tired as she prepared for an exam, 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies and equipment that will take effect (生效) on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point (小五号).
Teachers should also avoid using projectors (投影仪) or other multimedia equipment (多媒体设备) that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.
Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic devices (电子设备) we use every day, including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.

Do you like playing video games when you have free time? Lots of people do. There are many types of video games. Some people like action games. Others like driving games. But the most popular game of all is a puzzle game.
Tetris (俄罗斯方块) is a game about making lines. Blocks fall from the top of the screen. They fall one at a time. The player moves the blocks. Once the blocks hit the bottom, they are locked in place. Players try to make lines go across the screen with no gaps (缺口). Complete lines disappear, which gives players more room. The blocks pile up during the game. The game ends when the blocks get to the top of the screen.
A man named Alexey made Tetris in 1984 while working at a science academy (学院) in Moscow, Russia. Alexey named his game after tetra and tennis. The word “tetra” means four. So all the piece in Tetris have four blocks.
Alexey made his game on a screen that only showed letters. He could not use blocks. The blocks were made out of letters in the first game of Tetris. Still, all Alexey’s friends loved his game. It was easy to learn and fun to play.
Soon the game spread across the world, which was on every computer. It came with every one of Nintendo’s Game Boy. More than 100 million Game Boys were sold. Tetris was all over the place. Even today Tetris comes with many phones.
Dr Richard Haier who has studied Tetris players ran many tests. He found that playing Tetris improved mind and thinking activity. I agree with this finding. Now go and play some Tetris. It’s just what the doctor orders.
