Spain is famous for its tomato festival, called La Tomatina. It happens in a small town Bunol on the last Wednesday of August every year. During the festival there are all kinds of activities, but the most exciting part is the tomato fight. It takes place at the end of long celebration (庆祝). You are encouraged to throw tomatoes in the fight. There’re many stories about how the festival began. One of the stories goes that during the 1940’s, some friends started a tomato fight, while another story is about a local band. Anyway, everyone in Bunol seems to have a different story.
Before the tomato fight, there are parades (游行), musical bands, street parties and so on. On the day of the fight, shopkeepers cover their windows and doors in order to keep away from the tomato fight. At the same time, thousands of tourists and local people come to the town square together. Then large trucks (卡车) full of tomatoes arrive. From the back of the large trucks, a great town band start to throw tomatoes at others. Then the crowds fight back, throwing the tomatoes at anything and anyone. Soon the streets are in the sea of red tomato juice.
Everyone is supposed to obey a small number of rules: You must squash (压烂) the tomato before throwing it and you are allowed to throw nothing but tomatoes.
It is usually over in less than half an hour. Everyone then sets off to the river to clear up. Sounds like fun!

A soap opera called “Tiger Mother and Cat Father” is popular in China now. The tiger mother is pretty strict with her daughter and the little girl is not allowed to watch TV or play computer games. However, the cat father has an opposite view of how to raise their child. He gives her daughter more independence and doesn’t make many rules for her. Which one is better, “Tiger Mother”or “Cat Father”?

Whether the tiger mother or the cat father, respecting children and growing together are the keys to family education. Heavy socks can warm your feet if your feet are really cold. But have you heard of “getting cold feet”? (1)This expression has nothing to do with them feeling cold. The expression means being afraid to do something you planned to do.
You give a/the cold shoulder(冷淡)to someone when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone instead of speaking to him face to face. (2)You may “give a cold shoulder” to a person who never keeps promises.

When we are born, we are given names that stay with us for our whole lives. Some names include good wishes and hopes from parents, while others may be unique(独一无二的)and easy to remember. But do you know how the new coronavirus(冠状病毒)got its name?
According to International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses(国际病毒分类委员会), an organization that names new viruses, the task of naming a virus is no less important than naming a person.
When a disease breaks out, people focus on the public health response and the official naming of a new virus is often put off. But naming a virus is never easy. Over the past ten years, some improper names have caused problems. In 2009, the “swine flu(猪流感)” was widely used before the official name, H1N1 virus, was announced. This led Egypt to kill all of its pigs even though it appeared and spread among people who hadn’t been near pigs. In 2015, MERS(Midle Eat Respiratory Syndrome(中东呼吸综合征)) caused a backlash(强烈抵制)against the nations and people of this area.
So in 2015, the World Health Organization(WHO)announced that the names of viruses should be easy to remember but avoid being named after geographic place, people, classes of animals and foods.
Following these rules, the new coronavirus we are suffering from(遭受痛苦)was named “COVID-19” by the WHO on Feb 11. In this name, “CO” means “corona”, “VT” stands for “virus” and “D” means “disease”.
Next time you read about a virus you don’t know(线索), you may get some clues about it from its name.
76. According to the first paragraph, what are the features(特点)of people’s names?77. Is the task of naming a virus less important than naming a person?
78. What problem did the virus named “swine flu” cause?
79. When was the new coronavirus named “COVID-19”?
80. According to the passage, how can we know about a virus that we don’t know?
Each language is unique (独一无二的) and there is no “easy language” in the world to learn. But some of them are easier, and some more difficult. Now I’d like to talk about the top 5 most complicated sign systems (复杂的字符系统).
The Chinese language is worthy of the most difficult language. The Chinese dictionary lists more than 87, 000 characters. Many of them don’t reflect the phonetic (语音的) meaning of the word(声调). Using the wrong tones can change the meaning of your sentences.
The Arabic language is the second on my list because it is one of the most complicated sign systems in the world. One letter can have up to 4 different forms in writing, depending on its position in the word. It uses a right—to—left writing system. How strange!
The Russian language is difficult, though it’s my native language. There are words which sound the same but written in different ways, or words that are written the same(逗号) has different meanings. The punctuation(标点符号) is of great importance as well.
The Basque language is considered to be one of the most ancient languages in Europe. It has been mastered by some populations in southern France and northern Spain. The interesting thing is that this language was used by American soldiers during WWⅡto communicate secret information.
Inuit languages have so many tenses(时态) which makes them difficult to study. There are about 63 tenses. The Inuit writing system is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most complicated.
