Many people are afraid to cook Chinese food. They think it is difficult to prepare Chinese dishes. Ching-He Huang, a young cook and TV star, changed their ideas. She taught people some simple ways to cook Chinese food. It is easy for people to learn the dishes.

Ching-He was born in Taiwan in 1978. She first learned about traditional Chinese cooking from her grandparents. When she was a child, she liked staying in the kitchen. She also went to the market with her grandparents and they shopped for fresh ingredients.

At the age of eleven, she and her family moved to London. Because her mother was busy with her work, Ching-He always cooked meals for her family.

In 2005, Ching-He had her first TV cooking program. The next year, she wrote her first cookbook. In 2008, she starred in another TV show, Chinese Food Made Easy. For this TV show, she traveled around the UK and taught people to cook Chinese food. Over three million people watched the TV show.

Today, her TV shows are also popular in other countries. Thanks to Ching-He, more and more people around the world love to cook Chinese rood.

China’s Spring Festival blockbuster(大片) “Hi, Mom” beat the 2017 American superhero film “Wonder Woman” at 5.39 billion yuan on Tuesday and made Chinese film director Jia Ling overtake Patty Jenkins to be the world’s highest-grossing(最高票房记录的) female director for a single film.

The achievement was made 54 days after its release on February 12, the first day of Chinese New Year. “Hi, Mom” is currently the second highest-grossing film only after the 2017 action-adventure film “Wolf Warrior 2”, according to China’s movie-ticketing platform. They are the only two domestic-produced films among the top 100 grossing films worldwide.

“Hi, Mom” is the first film directed by Jia Ling, who is a comedian and actress. It stars Jia who was saddened by her mother Li Huanying’s accidental death, magically transported back to 1981 to become a friend of her mother and tried her best to delight and planned a better life for her mother.

“Although the film has a strong individual mark, it causes many people’s empathy,” said professor Tian Huiqun at the School of Arts and Communication of Beijing Normal University. He added that it is hard to copy the film’s success since Jia and the film itself cannot be reproduced.

The success of “Hi, Mom” also became a milestone to mark the growth of “She power” in the man-dominated film industry in the last ten years. However, some film critics say that the film’s success is just because people are interested in women topics for the time being, and money goes to people’s interest.

“Women creating films is still not an easy task,” Dong Yige, assistant professor in the Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies at University at Buffalo, “Why not use female audiences’ power to push the women creation?”

In 1994, a Japanese Masahiro Hara invented the Quick Response code(QR二维码) as a way to increase the amount of information that could be stored on a paper label. Before this, one-dimensional(1 D) barcodes had already been used since 1974 when the first barcode(条形码) was scanned in a supermarket in USA. The first barcodes is made up of two parts: the barcode and the 12-digit number. But the two-dimensional(2 D) code made by Mr. Hara can hold as much as 7,000 digits or 4,000 characters of text, including all Japanese characters. Many books have QR codes on their back cover which provide information such as the price, the author and the publisher.

Around 2006, Wang Yue and his team developed the Hanxin Code which can also encode(编码) Chinese characters. Short Hanxin Code, instead of long Chinese names, are now widely printed on the large quantity of shoes on trucks and ships. In 2014, Wang Yue’s company produced its first self-service QR code reader—the Smart Box. Now it has become the most popular offline payment in China.

QR codes can be easily read with any mobile phone that has a camera. So they are now widely used in factories and supermarkets, on various tickets and restaurant cashier tables. On 14 February, 2020, a QR code called “Health Code” is used in Hangzhou for people to quickly report their health status. Firstly, find an app named Alipay and scan the QR code included. Secondly, provide your name, phone number and ID number. Thirdly, answer some questions about your health status and whereabouts. Then you will get the “Health Code” with different colour, green for “being healthy”. Only with an updated green code, you may be allowed to enter or leave Hangzhou. On 21 February, 2020, a QR code is also used by Ms. Tang to inform her students about the course arrangement.
