文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,向我们介绍高速观看这种新技术。

High speed viewing

Whenever a new technology begins to affect society, we hear arguments about the “soulless (没有灵魂的) modern way”, and the “good old days”, when things were slower. Often the older generation complains about the younger one.

This debate heated up again recently when The Beijing News reported that nearly 70 percent of young people in China speed-watch videos and shows online. It can be concluded that today’s youth are so caught up in the fast pace of modern life that they can no longer give something their full attention.

There may be some truth to this, but is it the only truth?

I am one of these so-called speed-watchers. I tend to play South Korean soap operas the 2014 sensation (大热剧) Man From the Stars (《来自星星的你》), for example at 1.5x or 2x speed. The reason is simple. I want to know what the fuss is about and I don’t want to be left out of conversations online and with friends. I also speed-listen to informative audio, like TED talks and lectures, with the only purpose of taking in as much information as possible.

But there are films and podcasts that have my full attention-and they will have it. When watching the likes of Downton Abbey (《唐顿庄园》) or Game of Thrones (《权利的游戏》), to name two, I won’t skim past even a second of the action. Every long pause and change of emotion carries meaning that would be lost by speed-watching.

So perhaps the debate shouldn’t be about which one is better-the fast life or the slow one. Instead, it’s about understanding what’s really important to you and taking control of the time you want to spend on it.

“This is the future of how we will appreciate television and movies,” wrote reporter Jeff Guo on The Washington Post. “We will watch videos in new ways using our powers of time manipulation (控制). We will be watching on our own terms.”

Indeed, there is no fast or slow there is only your own terms, and your own pace.

26. What can we conclude from what The Beijing News reported?
A.The older generation is afraid of new technology.
B.The older generation loves looking back at the good old days.
C.Young Chinese people like to watch videos at faster speeds.
D.Young people are more likely to be happy with their lives.
27. Why does the author share her own experience?
A.To complain about the quality of recent TV series.
B.To stress the importance of common interests with friends.
C.To tell readers what she thinks a good TV product is like.
D.To share how she chooses different speeds to watch videos.
28. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A.Slow down to enjoy life.B.Live life at your own pace.
C.Follow most people’s lifestyle.D.Hurry up to take in as much as you can.

文章大意:本文讲述了一支骄傲的玫瑰花受到教训的故事。

One beautiful spring day, a red rose blossomed in a forest. As the rose looked around, a pine tree nearby said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I was that lovely.”

The rose turned and said, “It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in this forest.”

Then the rose looked at a Cactus (仙人掌) and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of thorns!”

The pine tree said, “Red rose, what kind of talk is this? You have thorns too.”

The proud red rose looked at the pine tree and said in anger. “You do not know what beauty is at all. You cannot compare my thorns to those of the cactus.”

“What a proud flower!” thought the trees.

The rose tried to move its roots away from the cactus. but it could not move. As the days passed, the red rose would look at the cactus and say insulting things, like “This plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his neighbor.”

The cactus never got upset and even tried to advise the rose, saving, “God did not create any form of life without a purpose.”

Spring passed, and the weather became very warm. Life became difficult in the forest, as there was no rain. The red rose was going to die because of the lack of water.

One day the rose saw sparrows stick their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away, refreshed. This was puzzling and the red rose asked the pine tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.

The rose opened its eyes in wonder and said, “The cactus has water?”

“Yes, you can also drink from it. The sparrow can bring water to you if you ask the cactus for help.”

文章大意:本文介绍了Uber致力于开发自主的电动飞行车辆,并以其他方式将其服务推向天空。

Uber has picked Melbourne as the first city outside of the United States to test its flying taxis.

Test flights in the Australian city will begin next year with a goal of commercial ride-hailing (商业打车) services by 2023, it announced on Tuesday.

“We will see other Australian cities following soon after,” Susan Anderson, Uber’s regional manager for Australia, said at the company’s flying car meeting, which is held once a year, in Washington DC.

Melbourne will be the third city to host trials of Uber’s flying taxis, after Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. The electric taxis will be flown by a pilot.

Allison, Uber’s head of Elevate.

Safety will also be a concern in Australia, where Uber has nearly 4 million regular customers for its ride-hailing service.

阅读短文及文后A—E选项,选出可以填入各题空白处的最佳选项。

On the third Saturday in every September, Egremont has a fair (展览会) bringing people from all around the country to see its attractions. I went along to this small market town to have a look. The Egremont Crab Fair started in the 13th century.     41     The Lord of Egremont started a tradition of giving away crab apples (山楂), from where the fair gets its name.     42     The town’s main street is closed to traffic all day so everyone can enjoy the fun of a street parade (游行) and dancing.

43     People put their heads through a horse collar (项圈), and pull the ugliest face they can make. The most successful are often those with false teeth, who can change their faces more when they remove them.     44     So, even though I enjoyed watching, I couldn’t hope to win against the more experienced gurners.

If you’re in the area and have a couple of days to spare, the Lake District is located just a little further inland.     45     It is also our largest National Park. You can find Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain; Wastwater, its deepest lake; and one of the smallest churches (教堂) in the country, St Olaf’s.
