When Sammie Vance was eight, she learned about Buddy Benches (伙伴长凳) from a video. The video showed how these benches are used on playgrounds. “If somebody is shy and lonely, he can sit on the bench,” Sammie explained. “Another person can come up to him and ask him to play.”
Sammie thought her school could use a Buddy Bench, so she and her mom set down a meeting with the headmaster. They got the information that a local company, Green Tree Plastics, recycles plastic bottle caps into benches. Sammie liked the idea of a Buddy Bench that would help kids and the environment. Her headmaster liked the idea too.
Sammie created a comic (漫画) that showed how a Buddy Bench works. She and her mom posted it on social media to ask friends and families to save caps. They also took the drawing to local businesses to ask for their help.
As words spread, collection boxes at school and around the community began to fill up.
People even shipped their caps to Sammie. “I got caps from 50 states,” she said.
She needed 400 pounds of caps to make one bench. In just two months, the project collected more than 1,200 pounds, which is enough to make three Buddy Benches!
After reaching her goal, Sammie set a new one—“Buddy Benches are everywhere!” So far, she has collected enough caps to give 100 benches to schools in 12 states. She continues to collect caps to share with kids working towards their own Buddy Benches. And she has made videos to encourage others to start their own projects.

Sounds are everywhere. You have two cool parts — ears on your body that can let you hear the sounds.
The ear is made up of three different parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. These parts all work together so you can hear sounds.
The outer ear is the part that you can see. It moves the sound waves(波浪) to the part of the ear inside the head. Inside your ear, you have an eardrum(耳膜). The eardrum is a thin piece of skin. Sound waves push against the eardrum. This makes the eardrum vibrate. When it vibrates, it moves its tiny bones. The bones help sounds move along to the inner ear. Then you can hear the sounds.
Ears are very useful. With the help of your ears, you can hear any sound. Maybe the sound is as quiet as your cat. Maybe it is so loud, like a plane flying by. Hearing is one of the most important senses, and it allows you to communicate, to learn and to enjoy things like music.
Believe it or not, your ears can help you keep balance. If there’s something wrong with your ears, you may fall down easily.
Therefore, ears should be protected well. We should protect our ears from loud noises in the daily life: When you listen to music with headphones on, make sure that the sound is not too loud. Remember to take breaks after listening for a while and let your ears have a good rest.
61. What is the writer trying to do in this passage?A.Refuse an invitation. | B.Express feelings. |

There are more than seven billion (十亿) people in the world, but only about two billion of them use the Internet. In some countries of South America half the people have never used a computer.
Rodrigo Baggio is a rich man from Rio de Janeiro (里约热内卢), Brazil. He made his money from computers and the Internet. He decided to do something to help the poor people in his city. He said an idea came to him in a dream. In his dream, he saw young people from the poor parts of the city using computers to improve their lives. Computers were changing the lives of many people. And he wanted everybody to be in that change.
In 1995 Rodrigo opened the first Center for Digital Inclusion(CDI) in Santa Marta, one of the poorest parts of Rio de Janeiro. It is a kind of school where young people can learn to use computers and other new technologies. They took four-month lessons, learning to use technology to work out problems in their lives.
Batista Silva, a student from Santa Marta, got advantages from those lessons. “I want to help others with what I have learned. There’s a lot of crime (犯罪) where I live,” he said. “I created a website where young people like me could make a promise not to become criminals (罪犯). Now about 5,000 people have made that promise. And because I learned how to work on websites, I got a job with a web design company.”
There are now many CDI centers in Brazil and in other countries, and more will open soon.
They will help thousands of young people to improve both their own lives and the lives of other people.
