What is the difference between a fear and a phobia? You might have a fear of dogs if you have ever been bitten by one. However, if you avoid walking down streets where you think there might be a dog, you may have a phobia, which is a strong unnatural fear. If the fear has started to change a person’s life, he or she probably has a phobia. Different surveys say that between 10 and 80 percent of us have at least one phobia.
You can probably guess what some of the most “popular” phobias are. Flying may be the safest way to travel, but many people are scared of doing it. Fear of heights is also very common. For example, Spider-Man actor Tobey Maquire can’t stand high places. However, Tobey is not afraid of spiders that most people are afraid of. Rupert Grint, who plays in the Harry Potter movies, is in fear of spiders. “In one scene of the movie, we come into the large spider’s hole, and there we meet a spider that is the size of an elephant and really scary because he has these hairs. I’m really scared of spiders,” he said.
Some people have phobias that are more unusual. For example, cats are very cute for most of us, but not for such powerful people in history as Alexander the Great and Napolean Bonaparte. Actor Nicole Kidman says, “I’m not scared of snakes or spiders, but I’m scared of butterflies. Sometimes when I came home from school, the biggest butterfly you had ever seen would be just sitting on our front gate. I would climb over the fence, move slowly to the side of the house, or do anything to avoid having to go through the front gate.” Clowns (小丑) are not so funny for actor Johnny Depp, whose childhood memory of the “painted faces and fake smiles” still makes him scared. Some other weird (怪诞的) phobias, including chewing gum, old doors or windows and footsteps, also fear some famous persons, such as Orah Winfred, Billy Bob and Sigmund Fred.
54. Rupert Grint who acted in Harry Potter is scared of________ .A.dogs | B.snakes | C.spiders | D.butterflies |
A.Cathy dislikes keeping a pet cat at home. |
B.Victor cannot sleep well before the exams. |
C.Linda feels very tired climbing the mountains. |
D.Doris shouts crazily whenever hearing footsteps at night. |
A.people are born with phobias | B.phobias are common in our daily life |
C.famous people are easier to get phobias | D.phobias do not influence people’s life at all |
Terry Fox was only seventeen when he got a cancer (癌症). He must have felt hopeless when the doctor said his right leg would have to be cut off 6 inches above the knee.
But to everyone’s surprise, Terry Fox made up his mind to become a long-distance runner and do something about the cancer. What a dream!
Although it seemed impossible, Terry decided to run across the whole country. He hoped to raise one million dollars for cancer research. Few believed he would make it. Anyway, on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. For the first days of his marathon, Terry Fox was alone. He started running at 4:30 am. Day by day, people began to realize that something big was happening on the lonely road. As people saw Terry, they stopped and donated (捐赠) money for cancer research.
However, his health took a rapid turn for the worse several months later. He had to give up his marathon on September 1, 1980. Terry died three months later, at the age of 22. In his short life, he raised $24 million for cancer research—one dollar for each person in his motherland.
Since his death, the yearly Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to be the world’s largest one-day fundraiser (筹资活动) for cancer research.

Chinese fancy knots (中国结), also called Chinese knots, are very important in Chinese culture. They began as a form of traditional art in the Tang and Song Dynasties ( 朝 代 ) in China, and became popular in the Ming Dynasty. Long ago, they found their way to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.
As for the name itself, it is surely meaningful. The Chinese word for “knot”, jie, means “connection”. And the pronunciation of the Chinese word jie is very close to that of ji, “good luck”. As a result, Chinese knots are used as a way to express people’s strong wishes for marvellous things like happiness, love and good luck.
The knots are used widely in everyday life. They come in different sizes. Small ones are connected to jewellery (珠宝) , clothes and gifts in order to draw people’ s attention, while large ones are used to make a living room or study more beautiful. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and usages. For example, Double Coin Knots are called Shuangqian Jie because they are in the shape of two ancient Chinese coins, meaning “good things come in pairs”. Besides, Chinese knots are famous for their bright colors. Different colors have different traditional cultural meanings. Red means good luck and happiness, green means health, and yellow means wealth.
All in all, the famous Chinese fancy knots fully show the Chinese culture. These brightly colored knots with their endless chains (链条) of knots mean that life on earth will continue forever.

Failure is such a common matter that every one of us may meet from time to time. Even the most successful people in the world have trouble times. People often say that "Failure is the mother of success. This might have some truth to it, but it does not tell us how to turn a loss into a win. We know we shouldn't give up when we fail — but in fact, we do. The following advice can help you turn failure into success.
•Accept your mistakes.
Accept that things did not work out as planned. Even if you worked especially hard on something, it’s important to know and accept that it didn't work. Don't let a failure stop you from trying a new idea in the future.
•Take a break.
You may not want to jump right back into your project after a failure. If you're tired or need some time to clear your head, take some time off. For some people, this may mean closing a project for some time while for others it may mean taking a vacation or road trip. Remember that leaving it for a while is not the same thing as stopping.
•Find out what went wrong.
You might feel painful at first, but spend some time thinking about why you failed. What went wrong or didn't work? For example, if you failed a test, think about how you studied for it. Do you need to study or learn in a different way? Answering these questions can help you learn from the experience and do better on your next exam.
•Listen to others.
If you get some advice on your project, take it to heart. Find out what parts other people think are working and which parts are not working. For example, if you're performing a musical piece, ask for advice on how to improve. You may get some valuable suggestions. Also, you can ask successful people what have led to success.
Failure is a common thing in our daily life. Once you learn how to do this, you will never be afraid to fail again.
