Terry Fox was only seventeen when he got a cancer (癌症). He must have felt hopeless when the doctor said his right leg would have to be cut off 6 inches above the knee.
But to everyone’s surprise, Terry Fox made up his mind to become a long-distance runner and do something about the cancer. What a dream!
Although it seemed impossible, Terry decided to run across the whole country. He hoped to raise one million dollars for cancer research. Few believed he would make it. Anyway, on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. For the first days of his marathon, Terry Fox was alone. He started running at 4:30 am. Day by day, people began to realize that something big was happening on the lonely road. As people saw Terry, they stopped and donated (捐赠) money for cancer research.
However, his health took a rapid turn for the worse several months later. He had to give up his marathon on September 1, 1980. Terry died three months later, at the age of 22. In his short life, he raised $24 million for cancer research—one dollar for each person in his motherland.
Since his death, the yearly Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to be the world’s largest one-day fundraiser (筹资活动) for cancer research.

When you wake up in the middle of the night with a nightmare (噩梦), you must be very scared. Don’t be in fear because it’s just a bad dream. Well, maybe you’ve gotten a chance to relax, because nightmares might actually be good for you.
According to New York Magazine, bad dreams can improve your mental (心理的) health. Most nightmares come from real-life worries, such as an upcoming exam, or terrible things you’ve seen. To reduce these worries, the brain turns the dream into a story in the form of a bad dream. So a bad dream can keep you away from anxieties (忧虑), and turn something you’re worried about now into a memory (记忆). The result is that when you wake up you’re able to move forward and face the future.
A study in The Atlantic Magazine, showed similar results. In a survey of more than 700 French students taking a medical school entrance exam, over 60 percent had bad dreams about the test the night before. These included not finishing on time, leaving a question blank, or being late. Those who reported dreams about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn’t. It shows that nightmares can actually help us prepare for the future.
So, the next time you wake up at night after a bad dream, it may be the brain is putting your fears behind you and readying you for the future. Although a nightmare may make you afraid for a short time, it may help you get out of the bad things. We should try to accept our nightmares rather than allow them to keep us awake. After all, lack of sleep causes more problems than dreaming.
28. A bad dream may be ________ to your mental health.A.careful | B.fearful | C.helpful | D.hopeful |

Dragon Head-raising Day is celebrated on the second day of the second Chinese lunar month to show respect to Dragon King and wish good weather for a big harvest. It is considered the start of spring and farming.
After the cold winter, spring comes and animals are awake, but because of the winter, the weather is dry and farming needs water. The story goes that after this day, the Dragon King who controls clouds and rains would wake from his winter sleep and bring rainfall for the crops.
On that day, there are lots of traditional celebration activities. First, in the early morning when it’s still dark, families go to a river or a well with lanterns to get water and then carry it back home. Then they light candles, burn incense sticks (香柱) and offer a sacrifice (祭品). This ritual is named Yintianlong (lead the field dragon). People believe the actions can bring wealth and health to their homes.
The most well-known tradition on the day is having a haircut. It’s a sign of good luck and energy in the whole year. However, it is very bad luck to get a haircut during the first lunar month.
Eating “dragon” food is another important part of celebrations. Chinese are best at connecting certain food with luck so food eaten on this day also gets special names. Noodles which are long and thin are called “dragon beard (long xu).” Dumplings are called “dragon ears (long er).” Spring rolls are “dragon scales (long lin)”, and people call popcorn “dragon seeds (long zi)”.
Those celebration activities may be different in the south and the north, and some activities are remained to nowadays, while some are just kept in the past. But the wish for a good year ahead is the same despite the change of time or space.
