One day, my friend, John Dancer, walked into Holiday Hotel with his friend, Charlie. “Good morning!” he said to the clerk. “My name is John Dancer. I’ve booked a room here.” The clerk said, “You’re welcome to stay, sir. I’m sorry that we don’t allow pets in this hotel.” “Pets!” cried John. “Charlie isn’t a pet. I’m blind and he’s my eyes. He helps me a lot. Don’t you, Charlie?” Charlie barked. It sounded like “Yes”. Finally, the clerk agreed.

John told us what happened next in his own words.

“I was tired and went to sleep. Later, Charlie woke me up. He was pulling my blanket（毛毯）and barking. I smelt smoke! A fire! But where? I went to the door of my room and felt it. The door was so hot that I couldn’t open it. The fire must be outside. I made my coat wet and put it along the bottom（底部）of the door.”

“I tried the phone but failed. I coughed. The smoke was getting through the wet coat. I lay on the floor with Charlie in my arms and waited. The minutes seemed like hours. Then I heard the fire alarm. At that time, it sounded like beautiful music to me. Moments later, the firefighters found both of us safe on the ground.”

“You saved Charlie’s life!” I said.

“Yes, and he also saved mine,” said John. “Didn’t you, Charlie?” Charlie barked. It sounded like “Yes”.

Many times we don’t want to do chores. However, the problem is that sometimes putting things off makes things worse. Wonder how to do it? It’s helpful to start by taking small steps to finish chores, especially those you find boring.

Your first step is to write down the chores you have to finish. It helps you know where to begin. Then, as you decide which chores to do, you can break them down into smaller ones.

Another step is just to imagine what a difference you will make. Imagine what your home will be like after you finish these chores. When you picture it in your mind, you’ll feel really motivated（有动力的）to start.

Finally, you’d better control the time to do chores. After you finish the chores within the specified time, reward （奖励）yourself with something you like. You’ll probably find that doing chores is not really bad, and you may even want to give yourself more time to do them, What’s more, finishing them will probably be rewarding enough, but you can always reward yourself with something special for a job well done.
