Once upon a time, a hippo (河马)lived in a river next to a big tree.
One day, a bird came and nested(筑巢) in the tree. The songs of the bird filled the hippo with so much envy that he couldn’t think of anything else. Every day, he would think why he wasn’t born to be a bird even though the bird told him many times he was lucky to be such a good swimmer.
Finally, the hippo made up his mind that he would come out of the river, climb the tree and start singing. However, when he tried to climb the tree, it was very clear that the hippo didn’t have wings, nor claws to climb with.
Realizing that he would never climb up the tree, he angrily hit the tree until it came crashing to the ground. Then he stepped onto the leaves of the fallen tree, and began singing.
Unluckily, hippos can’t sing, either. All that came from his mouth were terrible noises, and when the other animals heard this, they all came around to make fun of the hippo.
He was so ashamed by this. He also felt bad about having knocked the tree over. He used all his strength to raise the tree back up again, and look after it until it completely recovered(康复).

I’ve been writing detective stories since I was a teenager. Some people think it’s a strange job for a woman, but I think crime fiction is for everyone. I’ve started giving writing classes and the most common question people ask is, “Where do you start?” It’s impossible to give fixed rules, but there are some general tips that people often find useful.
●Before you start writing, choose a time period and place that sound realistic(现实的). A useful tip is to write about what you know. If you were born in Paris or London, it might make sense to set your story in a European country. Of course, you can write about any century, but you’ll have to do a lot more research to make your story believable.
●The character of your detective is very important. He or she must have qualities that help them solve the crime, but they also need characteristics that make them an individual(个人). He or she must also fit in the time and place of your story. Readers are very knowledgeable, and they will notice if you get any details wrong about the time period.
●Every detective story needs a crime, of course. You need to explain what happens before the crime, the crime itself and what happens next. Remember that you don’t always have to write about a murder. Some readers don’t enjoy stories filled with guns and blood. So, why not write about a theft, kidnapping, or something different like an environmental crime?
●Clues are important to keep the readers’ interest. They must be interesting, but not too difficult or repetitive(重复的). The readers also need to know who the suspects are and whether they can prove that they were somewhere else when a crime was committed. Readers love a “twist” at the end of the story—-a surprise or a new fact that brings the action to its conclusion.
57. The writer of the passage is ________.A.a detective | B.a woman | C.a teenager | D.a reader |
A.You won’t have to do so much research if you write about any century. |
B.The readers know whether the writer makes a mistake about the time period. |
C.The clues in the detective story must be interesting, difficult or repetitive. |
D.The readers enjoy stories like a murder because they are filled with guns and blood. |
A.重复 | B.结论 | C.转折 | D.冲突 |
A.To keep the readers’ interest. | B.To tell a real detective story. |
C.To describe the life of a story writer. | D.To give advice on writing a detective story. |
Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.”
Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well: she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
“Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens to children of her age.”
“But she has that cough!”
“That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said.
Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital.
In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Clare called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying.
“Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.”
“No, Papa,” said Eva, “I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go!”
“Why do you want to go? Are you unhappy, Eva?”
“Oh, I feel sad for our slaves(奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa, they were all free.”
“Don’t you think we treat them well?” said St Clare.
“But what will happen to them if anything happens to you? There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free?”
“Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it.” said St Clare. “Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep.” said Eva.

In the past summer holiday, a group of students in Wuhan were asked to record their parents’ and their own moods. Organizers started this challenge to help the students and their parents not lose temper (发火).
News about the challenge soon spread online, and many people began to have a try. At the same time, however, the news led to a lot of discussions, not only on anger itself, but on how we should control our moods. Let’s take a look at what people say.
Some people think feeling angry is a common thing. It’s just like feeling hungry, lonely or tired. What we should do is not to avoid it, but to find out what makes us angry and what to do with it. But anger specialist Isabel Clarke said on the Internet, “You can control your anger, and you should force yourself to do so.”
So how should we teenagers solve our anger? Here is some advice.
Being a teenager is hard, especially with all the schoolwork and responsibilities(责任). As a result, it is easier for us to get angry.
If we can take a few small steps, learning to put out that fire inside us can become a lot easier.
According to the BBC’s advice website, putting our anger into something creative is an easy way to deal with it. So, the next time you feel anger building up, you shouldn’t lock it away. Rather than lose your temper, try to express your bad moods in an active way. Paint something, write a poem, sing a song or just go for a walk.
After all, having moods is what makes us humans. And without them, even anger, the world wouldn’t be as beautiful as it is now. But we shouldn’t let them hurt ourselves or others.

Riding a Mobike on the street, you might hear some people speaking Chinese aloud. Turning to the right, you might see a Sichuan-style restaurant. After walking into a store, you might see that Huawei smartphones are on sale. But you’re not in China—you’re in Manchester in Britain. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products(产品)have been going all over the world.
Chinese food became popular in Western countries hundreds of years ago. To meet local people’s tastes, Chinese restaurants make some changes to the dishes. “One example is the meat.” said Yin Hang, a Chinese student who is studying in Australia. “We like to eat meat with the bone in, but people here don’t. So the local Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish. “
Some Chinese brands(品牌)are also becoming more popular. It is reported that in many cities in Europe, many stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers. More than half of US-owned drones(无人机)are Chinese models, according to China Daily. They’re not only made in China, but also designed and developed in the country.
In the past, most Western people thought Chinese products were cheap and not so good. But now, things have changed greatly. More people trust Chinese brands. “Made in China” becomes cool. “They are beautiful and offer something special that American phones don’t have,” an article on CNN once said about Chinese smartphones.
As it is said, Chinese government has been trying its best to improve its national brands of all kinds to meet the needs of modern life.
