As the model strutted(昂首阔步) down the runway, everyone went silent. They were actually showing great respect and admiration. As 24-year-old Niu Yu, walking with a prosthetic limb(假肢), showed confidence on the runway wearing an oversized sweater.
For Niu, it has been a long journey since an earthquake struck her village in Sichuan Province in 2008. She was at school and eager to go home to celebrate her birthday on May 12. But the earthquake occurred and Niu was buried. She was only saved three days later and lost her right leg. “I struggled for quite a long time before putting on the prosthetic leg and could not stand people staring at me,” Niu said.
That was until 2018 when Niu decided to make a big change in her life. On May 12 that year, she took part in a marathon(马拉松)and she completed it. “It suddenly became clear and I know that I must be brave to face the world,” she added. She then took many pictures and shared them on her social accounts, writing: “In fact, this is how I look.”
In August 2021, she shared a funny incident(事件) while playing the escape room game. In the dark room, a worker—who was supposed to scare the players—came from behind and pulled her right leg so hard that the prosthetic limb came off. “I turned around and we came eye-to-eye. His face turned pale and he was screaming out loud as he ran away,” she smiled.
On October 11, she received a surprise invitation from a sportswear brand, asking her to model their products. Just as she was hesitating(犹豫), she recalled an encouraging note received from a disabled person last year. The message says, “Although we are not perfect, we are still beautiful.” Niu then grabbed the chance.
“Everyone comes into this world with an aura(光环). You may be ordinary but you are definitely one of a kind,” she said.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic (遗传).
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied (欺负) by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame (责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.

When young people begin to live independence, home-hunting can be difficult. But they would do well to remember that a new choice is available—micro-homes.
Fondly called “tiny houses”, these houses have all living necessities in a small package, including the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Generally under 50 square meters, most tiny houses can hold just one or two people though some say they have the space for more. What’s lost in size is not lost in design as these homes are often quite modern in design.
Besides an attractive appearance, tiny houses can also have practical features (特点). Making the best of urban space, the 72-to-122 centimeter-wide Keren House in Warsaw, the world’s narrowest home, filled in an alley (小巷). The house uses solar power, wind power and rainwater collection to make its owner live practically anywhere.
Although micro-homes are attractive, there are a few disadvantages to consider before getting comfortable on a mini sofa. Moving into a tiny house, you should throw sway unnecessary things. It is also mostly impossible to invite guests. And finally, a micro-home is likely a temporary (暂时的) living choice for most people since they will probably start family and own more things.
Though the limitation (限制) will scare some, there is usually a benefit. A small size result in low prices and small bills, making it easier for people to afford tiny houses. And though you won’t have many things around the house, it makes it easy and simple to keep it clean. Micro-homes are also eco-friendly, which can’t be matched by other homes. They probably aren’t everyone or forever, but when comes to your next (or first) home, they could be just what you need.
