Every morning and afternoon on a busy road in Wangxian, Hunan Province, Tang Qixue guides cars to help students cross the road safely. Tang isn’t a policeman. In fact, he is a retired (退休的) primary school teacher.

Tang helps students in this way because of a car accident 16 years ago on the road. Tang saw two of his students die in the accident. He felt very sad and decided to work on the road to protect (保护) students.

When Tang told his family about the idea, they didn’t agree because it might put him in danger. However, he said he wouldn’t be afraid as long as he could help students. He then started guiding cars from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., helping students cross the road. Even when it rained or snowed, he was there. In the past 16 years, not one student has got hit by a car. However, Tang got hit twice. That didn’t stop him from helping students. “I always feel happy when I see students cross the road safely,” he said. Tang retired from teaching in 2017. Since then (自从那时起), he has been able to spend more time guiding cars. What’s more, he often goes back to school to teach students road safety.

“Though I am retired, my love for students will never go away,” Tang said.

I left school when I was 18 years old and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. So I started working on my parents’ farm. I helped look after the animals and learned how to grow plants.     45    

After two years, I decided to try something new. I always loved art and design (设计), so I wanted to find a creative job. But I was worried about telling my parents about my decision. They needed me to help on the farm. How could I tell them that I wanted to leave? I put off talking to them about it for a few months. But finally, I knew that I had to tell them my decision.     46     In fact, they wanted to sell the farm and relax for a few years, but they were worried about telling me! It turned out that we just didn’t share our decisions because we loved each other.

A few months later, my parents sold the farm and moved to a house near the sea.     47     They have made new friends and go for long walks on the beach every day. And as for me, I went back to college and studies design.     48     I design and build houses for people. I love my job because I get creative every day.
