Is it surprising that the giant panda—a big bear spends all day eating bamboo? Bamboo is a tough(坚硬的), stick-like plant with few nutrients(营养), so a 300-pound panda needs about 30 pounds a day. How do pandas do it?
The answer is in their paws. Each one has a sixth digit, which scientists call a “pseudo-thumb.” “It’s not as good as our finger, so they can’t make tools or difficult movements” said Xiaoming Wang(scientist who studies fossils at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in California). But the pseudo-thumb is shaped like a hook, and it helps the bear tightly hold bamboos as it eats them.
For many years, researchers have wondered how the pseudo-thumb evolved(进化). Very few fossils of panda paws have been found. The earliest evidence(证据) was from about 150, 000 years ago. But in 2015, Wang and his team discovered a spoon-shaped piece of bone belonging to Ailurarctos(始熊猫), about 6 to 7 million years ago. Ailurarctos seemed to be one of the first animals to actually use its pseudo-thumb.
The researchers believe that Ailurarctos lived in a crowded jungle, where trees and plants grew very closely. They had to compete with ancient animals for food, being able to eat bamboo helped the bear stay alive. Bamboo was available in great numbers and it grew quickly, so the bears could eat as much as they wanted.

C.many fossils of panda paws have been found by scientists |
D.30 pounds bamboo a day is needed for a 300-pound panda |
