Vivienne Smith wants to make the world a better place for all kids. She sells lemonade (柠檬饮料) to help children around the world.

At the age of 8, Vivienne saw a photo of two young boys carrying large, heavy rocks on their backs. These children were the same age as Vivienne, but they did not have the same freedom and chances.

In some parts of the world, children are made to work hard long days. They get little or no pay. They do not go to school. Vivienne wants to make a difference in this. “I want all kids to be able to play happily,” Vivienne, now 10, says.

To help raise money for children like the two boys in the photo, Vivienne set up a stand to sell lemonade near her home in Marin County, California. She decided to work every day for a year, rain or shine. “Sometimes, it was hard for me, when the weather was bad or I wasn’t feeling well,” Vivienne says, “but I knew that other kids were having a harder time than I was at that very moment.”

Vivienne wanted to raise $100,000 in 365 days. On day 175, she passed her goal (目标). But that didn’t stop Vivienne from working. With her family, she started Make a Stand, Inc. The company now bottles Vivienne’s lemonade and sells it in 130 stores around the country. A high percentage of sales go to help Vivienne’s dream of making the world a better place for all children.

Qian Zhongshu was one of the most well-known Chinese writers to the western world. Born on November 21st, 1910 in Wuxi, Jiangsu, he grew up with his uncle. Qian liked reading books and had a surprising memory (记忆力). He only needed to read something once before learning it by heart. He showed his good memory at an early age. When he was a small boy, his uncle often took him to teahouses. He liked reading storybooks in the tea houses. That had an important influence (影响) on him.

When they returned home, he could retell the stories to his cousins. Qian went to Tsinghua University in 1929. He didn’t pass his maths test, but he got into the university because he was so good at Chinese and English. In Tsinghua University he met his wife Yang Jiang. She is one year younger than him and a famous writer, too. They married in 1935. Two years later, their daughter Qian Yuan was born. Qian died of illness on December 19, 1998. He left many works to the world. His most famous novel, Fortress Besieged   (《围城》), came out in 1947. It is famous around the world.
