How do you feel about your looks? Is it important to have a beautiful face? Are there other things that can make a person special? The way you look is special. Do you know what I mean by that? We all look a little different. Some of us are tall. Some of us are fat. The point is, all of us have our own look-our own face.
Sometimes, we might feel bad about looking different. We might feel like we look ugly or strange. But our differences are what make us special.
I recently watched a speech by a man named Robert Hoge. He was born with a strange-looking face. His mother always worried that he would face many difficulties in life. But what Hoge did changed his mother's mind little by little. Strangers would stare at him or even make fun of him. But he didn't care at all. He decided to accept his face and feel confident (自信的) in himself. He has made a decision to live an amazing life.
It's hard when you feel like you don't look "normal" or "perfect". But the truth is, no one is perfect. The important thing to remember is that you are special, no matter what you look like.
根据短文内容,判断下列各句正(T)、误(F)。16. According to the writer, all of us look a little different.
17. The writer recently watched a speech by Robert Hoge's mother.
18. Hoge's mother used to worry that he would face many difficulties in life.
19. When strangers made fun of him, Hoge lost his confidence.
20. The writer tries to tell us that we are special no matter what we look like.
Can you imagine turning your school into a farm? This is what we did recently.
Under the “double reduction” policy, we now have many new clubs and after-school activities. One of the most popular clubs is the Happy Farming Club.
“At first I thought I could just grow some vegetables here,” said Zhang Xin, a club member. “But it turned out that I also learned a lot about agriculture and biology.”
After studying crops like wheat and garlic, we got the chance to grow them. “My group tried growing leeks (韭菜),” said Zhang. “We first put the roots underground. Then we covered them with a thin layer of soil and watered them. After doing all this, we had a great sense of achievement. We hope the leeks can grow strong!”
Other groups grew different things, such as wheat and spinach (菠菜). To tell them apart, students set up boards with the vegetables’ names on them. The campus looks like a small farm now.
“In the 38 years of our school’s history, we are the first to grow vegetables,” said Zhang. “This is really a special experience!”

When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied, “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world—the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!
I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world ?” I certainly know the answer. What do you think?

C.To tell an interesting story about the Grand Canyon. |
D.To attract people to visit the Grand Canyon. |
Everyone needs deep sleep, because our body fixes itself when we are in deep sleep. However, deep sleep doesn’t happen right after we get into bed and close our eyes. It takes time and happens only a few times during sleep. From the picture, we can know the time when deep sleep usually happens.
In the picture, REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and NREM stands for Non-Rapid Eye Movement. During REM sleep, our eyes move quickly from side to side, and that doesn’t happen during NREM sleep.
NREM sleep comes after REM sleep, and it has three stages. In the first stage, others can easily wake us up because we are in light sleep. In the second stage, our heart rate(比率) is slow, and our body is cool to get ready for deep sleep. The third stage is deep sleep. It’s more difficult for others to wake us up in this stage because our body is busy fixing itself. But it doesn’t last long.
We go back to the stage of REM sleep about 90 minutes after we start to sleep. This stage is part of light sleep, too. And dreams usually happen here. Then NREM sleep comes back. Although we can go back to NREM sleep again, we don’t always get into the third stage. This is why a long sleep doesn’t always make us feel good. The key lies in how much deep sleep we get. And how can we have as much deep sleep as we want? Doctors haven’t got the answer yet.
30. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________ .A.deep sleep | B.light sleep | C.NREM sleep | D.REM sleep |
A.Our body. | B.Deep sleep. | C.Our eyes. | D.Eye movement. |
A.REM sleep | B.NREM sleep |
C.both REM and NREM sleep | D.deep sleep |
A.REM sleep only happens once. |
B.After the three stages of NREM sleep, people wake up. |
C.People first go into NREM sleep, and then REM sleep. |
D.People won’t get into the third stage of NREM sleep after three hours of sleep. |
A.Our eyes move quickly during NREM sleep. |
B.Deep sleep lasts for a long time. |
C.Deep sleep is good for our bodies. |
D.Doctors know how to get more deep steep. |
Teenage life — better now,or in the past?
Does this situation sound familiar (熟悉)?
You are complaining (抱怨)to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn't powerful enough to play the latest games.
When I was your age, there weren’t any computers or video games. And I didn’t get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand.
So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays.
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it's just as, with our computer or television. Teenagers don’t do enough exercise.
What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?
A.And it was too big for me. |
B.A typical family is smaller now. |
C.Or your friends’ bikes are better than yours! |
D.So they aren’t as healthy as they were in the past. |
E.Technology is probably the greatest change in our life. |

A Daughter’s Letter
Dear Mum,①Today is my birthday. I’m writing you this letter because I want you to know how much I love you.
②A few days ago, we learned an English poem named Mom Knows Best. I felt strong mother’s love between the lines, and it reminded me of you, Mum! In class, Miss Li recalled that what her mum had done for her and how her mum had encouraged her. But she mentioned that she felt really regretful because she had no chance to say “I love you” to her mum, for her mother had passed away. This made me think a lot. It seems that I’ve never told you “I love you”, so I can’t wait to write the letter.
③I still remember the times when you held my hand and counted steps with me as we walked along. You told me stones about the brave elephant and encouraged me to be a girl with a positive attitude. I also remember that in our small flat, you read books at your desk while I played with my toys on the bed nearby. In cool autumns, we took many walks along the street, chatting and laughing together. My childhood was filled with these warm memories. Now, I see what an influence you’ve had on my life.
④Time flies and so much has happened. There have been good and bad times, successes and failures, but you were always by my side. When I won the swimming prize, you smiled and said you were proud of me. When I failed my math exam, you encouraged me and said that everything would be fine. Your words helped me to deal with all my difficulties. Now, whenever I have problems, I always think of your words and they really help me so much.
⑤Mum, because of you, I’m brave and strong; because of you, I’m full of power and energy; because of you, I’m living a wonderful life. I can’t help but say, “Mum, I love you!”
