A 550-kg robot helps tea farmers pick Longjing tea in Hangzhou’s West Lake.
Longjing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is a kind of green tea. As one of China’s 10 most famous teas, it has green color, smooth taste, and a beautiful shape.
“Having a beautiful shape is often considered to be good tea. The picking work of such tea leaves is mostly done by hand, and it’s very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, the developer of the robot. However, most of the tea pickers are in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and there are hardly any young people willing to find jobs in the industry.
“If so, the Longjing tea industry may face great difficulty when there remains nobody to help pick the leaves,” Jia said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots as early as 2019.
Earlier in 2023, Jia’s robot helper developed into its fifth generation (代), lifting the accuracy to 86 percent and improving the picking efficiency (效率) to 1.5 seconds per tea leaf. Compared with the third generation robot, the new robot’s tea-picking success rate (率) rose from 40 percent to 60 percent.
The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker. Though the robot is still being tested, they plan to make it better, allowing the tea industry to enjoy the advantages brought by modern in the coming future.

Lewis Carroll was born in 1832. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He had a terrible stuttering (口吃的) problem, but he loved to tell stories. On the July of 4, 1862, Charles went on a picnic with some friends up the Isis River. One of the children on the picnic was a ten-year-old girl named Alice. Alice begged Charles to tell her one of his stories. So he began telling her a story about a young girl named Alice and her adventures underground. The story was attractive. At the end of the story, Alice told Charles that she hoped he would write down Alice’s stories for her. Charles promised her that he would try.
Three years later to that very day, Alice received her very own copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Social media (媒体) is a big part of most people’s lives. There are social apps and sites like WeChat and Sina Weibo, as well as video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. How do you behave when you use these apps?
Recently researchers at the University of Sussex, UK, studied social media users ranging from 10 to 15 years old. They found that they can be divided into four personality types.
Geeks (极客)
Geeks are active social media users, but they find it much more difficult to deal with the life in the real world. Most of them are boys who like playing computer games and making music and videos. They often post creative works online, using fake (假的) names. In fact, they should avoid spending too much time on the Internet.
Internet celebrities
Internet celebrities like sharing as well, but they are much more visible (看得见的) than geeks. They might become well-known for their singing or dancing. But many of them, especially teenagers, share almost every side of their lives in order to own more fans. Being a teenage Internet celebrity can sometimes cause problems in the real world.
Lurkers (潜伏者)
The first two groups are lucky to find a place to show their talent. But most teenagers fall into the third type—“lurkers”, or people who are neither too active nor visible. This group prefers WeChat over Sina Weibo, as WeChat has private groups. They can’t express themselves well but at least they make sure to protect their personal information.
Victims (受害者)
Victims don’t have enough knowledge to keep themselves safe online. Their personal information can be made public and cause problems for them. To avoid being a victim, you should check your personal settings on social media. “Friends only” is a good choice for your posts. Don’t share your personal information.
